Subject: LV sat report Date: Sun, 23 Nov 1997 04:43:33 -0500 (EST) From: Puckfan31@aol.com To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hello all y'all pimps ho's and hustlas! Its the LV money mack with the phat sat report. Peep this technique as I ryhme on time and give you what you want ghetto style. W P is the place to be, thats Wizards Playground to you and me. If you visit the L to the V, thats where you are bound to see the best in the state of NV. You know we're not frontin' cuz' the place gets jumpin' every saturday you'll hear us say...OH YEAH!!!!! Its a cash money tournay!!!!!! If you people think that I will "rap" this whole report you are smoking more crack than I was to "rap" even that much. I will leave the ryhmin' to those with the skillz' like "Scrubby" who has been known to "bust a ryhme" now and then ;) On to the report. Saturday was the second cash tourney that Wizards Playground ran. Once again the best in LV showed up to claim their chips. A lot of us ran the same decks as last week trying to "meta-game" sideboards or make improvments. I don't think we saw any clear winning deck styles emerge as once again we had a wide assortment of deck types in the finals. I played my WW forgotten orb style deck. I made some changes to last weeks deck by adding a Slieght main deck, Repenants main and tightening up my mana with Tithe as we were going to play the optional mulligan rule. My 'board changed a lot too as I expected to see more B/R beat down or maybe even StOmPy. I won't bother with my decklist 'cuz I didn't win but I'll write this report anyways 'cuz I guess its my new job. I think I'll be waiting a long time before I see a paycheck. Well my first round I meet Joe "Lord of the Baubles" Spica. He is running his version of "The schoolyard" which I will call "South Central High" just cuz it sounds much cooler. I played this deck before and my anti-bloom 'board cards should send his deck on summer vacation. game 1 I crush him with early weenies and my main deck disenchants. Wow an easy first round win? Perhaps not... game 2 He 'boards in the campus police and I have no answer! Suq ata fire walkers send me to detention. Strong! Game 3 I side board horribly, see minimal removal cards and wake up with drool on my desk. game, match, set. Match 2 vs some guy who is going to kill me 'cuz I don't know his name. Its late and I didn't take notes. Sorry. He was running some sort of Hammer / blue deck. game 1 He burns the crap out of me. He plays Impulses and Propaganda too and as I am trying to figure out what he's running I get the disenchant then winter orb and counter lockdown. He almost had me with a Fireblast but I have the P.sink. I beat him with the Soltari Priest (more on him later) game 2 I 'board in 3 Chill and see 1 in my opening hand and 1 e-tutor! Soltari beatdown once again. I think this guys deck was the most original I saw at the tourney. I could be wrong and maybe I didn't do my homework but I think it was an original idea. I'm happy to see some players are still willing to muck it up in the trenches with new ideas, its players like this guy, who's name I can't remember, who inspire new deck types and remind us all to never leave our guard down to non-Dojo decks. Match 3 vs "Scrubby" 3cB. I had a feeling I would see his deck this week. I am so excited to play him 'cuz I have all the answers in my sideboard. last week in the booster draft "scrubby" gave me a lesson in BEATDOWN and I wanted to return the favor. game 1 O.K. so I expected to lose the first one. Beatdown: to inflict damage every turn while your opponent searches franticaly for an answer. game 2 My sideboard will ruin his day its all about CONTROL!!!! Yes! I have Propagandas, 'geddon, light of day,and WoGs. Beatdown: to inflict damage every turn while your opponent searches franticaly for his control cards. What was I thinking. Thanks "Scrub" you taught me a lesson. I am out of the final cut but I play anyways. Match 4 vs a kid named Matt I think. He was a new player with a green/ white deck. game 1 I am killed by creatures. see "beatdown" above. game 2 outplay and win game 3 outplay and win I wanted to let this guy know that I have been playing this game with some of the best in the world for over 5 years and I am still learning and improving. My advise to you and any new players is play, play, play so you can know what every card does in every situation. It may seem like a lot to absorb but if you cut out the "crappy" cards and just study the tournament decks and the cards that are in them you will be suprised at how quickly you improve. I have to say this kid had good deck building instincts he seemed to love creatures and beat me down first game. The only reason I won the next games is 'cuz I lured him into emptying his hand then hit the W.o.G then the 'Geddon. Match 5 another kid. nice guy with a wierd deck. Mundungus and other funky stuff. Game 1 I roll him Game 2 I am at 10 life from constant Mundungu counter beatdown. His hand empties and I go to work. Now on to the real games. The final 8 1.Kyle "The F****n' Terminator" Boyd - Sligh ( his very own deck, we are so proud) 2.Joe "Fah-T" Newman - 5cG 3.Rob "Scrubby" -3cB aka the super Scrubby surprise 4.Shannon "Grape Ape" Krumrick -Blue ophie beatdown. aka crumple cakes gooney goo goo 5.Eric "I'm too cool for a nickname" Gonce. Sligh aka pimp madness 6.Don "Scragnoth" Price. I dont know what Don was running but he called it cheese madness and I saw Force spikes! ;) way to go Don! 7.Steve "I dont have a stupid name for my deck" Beachum -5cB (thanks Steve) 8.Joe "Lord of the baubles...Urzas, that is" Spica -South Central High. Quickly cuz I'm tired. Quarters Kyles beats Joe Shannon beats Scrubby Gonce beats Don Spica beats Steve Semis Gonce "out Slighs" Kyle Spica beats Shannon finals Gonce and Spica split first. Now a few closing notes. once again a great Tourney lots of fun all around. Matt Tabak judged and did a fine job as usual. If you want your name in these reports please do the following, wear a namebadge and win all your games while wearing a propellar top beanie. I might just remember you and get your name on the posts. Sorry again for those of you I couldn't remember. My last word is on the Soltari Priest he is by far the phatest card to be printed in a while. He is hard to remove, cheap, hard to block. You can't ask for any more for 2 white mana. He makes it into my "money cards" club. "money" cards are those which stand out as tourney winners. For instance "When the Centaur hit he had no answer and it won me the game" the centaur is "money". cuz I won the tourney and I collected the cash. Well I'm falling asleep I'll see you all next week. Time to build Extended deck for the San Fransisco GP. Any ideas are welcome. Just remember , Its all about the benjamins baby. Keith "Money" Ouellette
