Subject: Type 2 Deck, small tourney report Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 00:14:35 -0500 From: AceNoFace@webtv.net (Paul Schumacher) Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy Here is a Type 2 deck that I won a tournament with this past weekend. I call it DubDub, after the weird looks that people give me when I play it. It is basically a 5 color goodstuff type deck. Here's the Deck: 2 Terror 4 Man-o-War 2 Ophidian 4 Dirtcowl Wurm 1 Maro 2 Mirri's Guile 4 Skyshroud Elves 4 Incinerate 1 Rolling Thunder 2 Searing Touch 3 Wildfire Emissary 2 Disenchant 3 Armageddon 2 Wrath of God 4 City of Brass 1 Gemstone Mine 2 Reflecting Pool 2 Undiscovered Paradise 5 Forests 3 Island 3 Mountain 4 Plains Now, for a little report. I apologize now that it won't be very detailed, because I didn't keep track of anything. This is all from memory. This was a Type 2, double elimination tournament. Round 1, I played a White Weenie deck that used Empyrial Armor. My deck is slower than White Weenie, but it has the ability to catch up big time. In both games, my opponent had 3rd turn Empyrial Armored creatures. In both games, the mighty Man-o-War saved me from Empyrial Armor beatdown. You know, Searing Touch really does rock versus Pump Knights ; ) Anyways, I won both games with the Dirtcowl-Armageddon combo. Boy, am I glad Swords is gone. Round 2, my deck decided not to give me land in both games versus straight Red Burn. Needless to say, I lost pretty fast. That was my first loss. Round 3, I beat the guy so fast in both games that I don't know what he had. Of course, when they're sligtly mana screwed and you have Dirtcowls, they usually do lose fast. Round 4, another guy that I beat pretty fast. I saw Elves come out of his deck, but I shot them down as fast as I could. Round 5, I played a Counter-Control deck. I was cruising along in game 1 until my opponent Abducted my Wildfire and all I could draw was land. Luckily, in my sideboard, I had the mighty Scragnoth! Games 2 and 3 were won because Scragnoth laughed at my opponent and smacked him around a bit. Round 6 was the beginning of the Final Four. Wouldn't you know, I was paired up against the guy that beat me in Round 2. Oh well. Game 1, his burn was faster than my deck. I lost. Game 2, my deck decided it had had enough of being burnt, and in both games it gave me my COP Red from my sideboard in my opening hand. Also, it feels kinda good Man-o-Warring a Rathi Dragon : ) Round 7 started the Finals. I say started, because this was double elimination, and my opponent was undefeated! I didn't really mind. He was playing a Stompyish deck. One of the things I designed DubDub for was to beat Stompy. Sure, he had early life advantage in all 3 games (I was mana screwed in game 2), but my Man-o-Wars and Wildfires worked wonders. Of course, the Searing Touch was nice at shooting down those little Elves. Round 8, the final match. I took a VERY close game 1. Game 2, mana screw on my part, god draw for my opponent. It all came down to Game 3. We had about 10-15 people watching us. My opponent seemed a little bothered by the crowd. I, on the other hand, kind of enjoyed it. I kept trying to get the crowd to cheer for good plays. This REALLY rattled my opponent. (I learned that little trick from my fellow Horseman, Todd Ritchey) This game was one of the best games I have ever played. It was really close the whole time. Stompy guy had early life advantage, but after a while we just sat there, all locked up. Luckily, I drew a Searing Touch. I started whittling away at his life. I figured I would kill him eventually. Then, he made his move. He cast Waiting in the Weeds. He had like 7 little Cats. He attacked me and knocked me down to the 5 range. Lucky for me I killed most of his tokens so he couldn't attack again. I just kept doing a point a turn. Then, he cast Waiting in the Weeds Again! He attacked next turn and took me down to 3. I was still holding. He was at about 15 at this point. I was holding a Rolling Thunder, so I kept laying land a pinging him to get him down. Finally, he was at 10 and I had 12 land. He died. I impressed the crowd so much, a couple people asked for my decklist. Boy, did I feel good after that. Well, that's about all for know. If you have any suggestions or comments for my deck, please feel free to email me. Thanks for reading. Paul **Never hit a man with glasses. Hit him with something much bigger and heavier**
