Subject: T2 Report: Warzone, Atlanta, Saturday, October 18 Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 14:51:13 -0400 From: gs11slm Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy Here goes another tourney report... Me: Sol Malka Deck: R/b/w Hammer/Fatties Event: Type 2, double elim. Round 1: HS age kid w/o enough tournaments for a ranking, playing R/W good stuff. Game 1: He gets an outhouse which gets a couple points in before I kill it. I draw lots of fat. A Derelor gets plowed, then a wildfire gets torched, next a derelor gets torched, and finally a wildfire gets wrathed. I drop my last fatty, a wildfire, and plan on winning since I'm holding a bone harvest. I'm at about 10 or 12 when he drops a Volcanic Dragon! He's winning the life race now, and I have to hold the harvest so I can do as much damage as possible with the wildfire, but it's to no avail as he quickly kills me with the Dragon and burn. Game 2: He double mulligans (no land) and I skillfully kill him with wildfires. Game 3: I get a fast Wildfire but he gets CoP: Red. I have white mana so I just need to draw the chant. I sneak in a few points with bolts when he nearly taps out, and he offers no threats other than a Blinking Spirit, which I can block. He passages some damage once or twice but I'm at a comfortable total. He also gets CoP: Black for the Derelors which are now in my sideboard (he kept the plows in too). Finally draw a disenchant and do it on the end of his turn, then untap and apply large amounts of beatdown with the wildfire. 1-0, 2-1. Round 2: Andy Wolf, G/R/b weenie/stormbind/spark thingy like the one Jay Schneider's been playing (Andy added B for Misfortune and Derelors.) Game 1: He lays a mountain turn 1 and says done, lays no land turn 2 and discards misfortune, my turn 3 I pillage. He topdecks land from there and gets some green 1cc weenies but I get 3 derelors and a quake. I win. Game 2: He thaws for a swamp and gets an early Derelor which mutuals with one of mine. He gets some sentinels going and I hammer some stuff and drop some fat. I maintain control of his weenies, terror his eventual goyfs, and finally send over a derelor and a wildfire for the kill. He had almost enough burn in his hand to kill me and was holding it until he absolutely needed to use it on my creatures. He also drew too much land despite his thawing. 2-0, 4-1. Round 3: Joe (can't remember last name), B Buried/Animate weirdness. Game 1: He seems to have mana problems and really doesn't do much of anything. I kill him easily with a Derelor. Game 2: Again an early Derelor after taking 2 from a Drudge. He sacs it to tendrils me and gets a wildfire and a quake I think; I held Serrated Arrows, Thaw, and something else important (harvest?). He gets an Animated Archangel and an Abyssal Gatekeeper. I drop the Arrows and send Daryl over; he takes it. Next turn he attacks; I serrate the 'keeper and Daryl and the Archangel die. I harvest daryl and the wildfire back I think, and play the wildfire. He gets an ashen and a nether back from the grave; I serrate 1 and block the other, then start applying since he can't recur again. I win shortly thereafter. 3-0, 6-1. Round 4: Doug Leonhardt, U Watergate (see my previous reports if you don't know about this deck or this matchup). I settle in for what promises to be a great matchup. Instead, it's one of the most pathetic matches with which I've been associated. Game 1: I get an undiscovered for mana. I topdeck a furnace and he spikes it. A couple turns later I get another. Smelling blood he lays a rainbow as soon as he gets 4 mana, probably with FoW backup. I cantrip the furnace with the second land (swamp) and start topdecking more, cast my mind stone successfully, and try to hammer/incinerate the rainbow while at 5 or 8 life, but Doug has the FoW. I concede. Game 2: After much (usual) SBing, we begin. Doug starts off as he likes to, with a thaw. I get a turn 2 Stone. Doug lays no land turn 2. I get a turn 3 Derelor backed up by 3(!!) pyros. When Doug gets land it's too late, although he goes down fighting (big counter war over a brainstorm). Game 3: I have a great opening hand: 2 Stupors and 2 Pyros. 2 mountains for land. After several turns I get the 3rd land but it's just a mountain. I don't get the 4th land until the 22nd card (15th turn) but that's just a mountain too. In the meantime I incinerate Doug 4 times when I would otherwise have to discard (he thinks about countering the last but doesn't), get a mind stone countered, and discard Disenchant, Aether Flash, Serrated Arrows, and other good anti-Doug cards while drawing Stupors #3 and 4. One black mana early and I probably win. I finally get an Undiscovered and start Stuporing just after Doug commences the Rainbow beatdown with about 10 islands and a full hand; Doug counters each stupor until the 4th which he allows. He gets 2 Rainbows and wins in a laugher. 3-1, 7-3. Round 5: bye Round 6: Michael Ghim, R/B utility. Game 1: He stupors me, I stupor him, I quake a miner and a shadow guildmage before playing nonbasic land and a Daryl. With his hand depleted from my 2-for-1 action I start applying and get a Wildfire too. I win quickly. Game 2: Long game in which I am never really threatened. He stupors with my hand at 5 cards and tags 1 of my 2 Mangara's; I choose to discard the other, rack up 4 life and get them back. Needless to say he doesn't Stupor again :) He deals with my derelors for awhile and drops a Wildfire, rather than quaking I drop an Arrow and Serrate it before finally finishing it with a Trading Post. This leaves me at 16 I think. We each thaw like madmen until I have none left. He pillages my post and lays a Disk for insurance. I lay derelor #2 and he fireblasts it with six mana. I lay derelor #3 and he disks. I play the bone harvest I've been holding and get 3 derelors on top. He deals with the first but one of the other two applies. I mangara's twice on the end of his turn, attack, and drop a huge earthquake. He was holding a torch for 14 or so but didn't use since he knew I had the mangara's. 4-1, 9-3. At this point Doug is 6-0 and undefeated, and Harry Dinch (B weenie/Buried) is 4-1 and still alive. the stupid double elim rules will have Doug playing me or Harry while the other 4-1 gets bye #2. None of us like this, so we split the $200 pot 90-55-55, with Doug getting the $90 of course since he's unbeaten, and end the tourney.
