Subject: PTQ ATLANTA REPORT 12/20 Date: Tue, 23 Dec 1997 15:50:58 -0500 From: David Doust To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Atlanta PTQ for L.A. tournament report 12/20 101 attended at this qualifier. This round of qualifiers is turning out to be pretty decent after all! We had players from all over, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, New Orleans, North and South Carolina and of course a whole bunch form Georgia. Tournament started promptly at 10:00 am. And all popular deck types were represented. A special mention goes to Josh Gorfain and Chris Donahoe’s "Allota Fagina" deck, ( obviously inspired by Austin Powers!!!!) I am sure that he would want to use the deck again, so I will not post the exact deck content, but here is the combo Howling Mines/Glacial Chasm/ Gerrard’s Wisdom/Gaea’s Blessings and lots of counters. I will leave the rest to your imagination. The deck did ok, but it faced really bad pairing, so look out for it again in the up-coming QTs. The rounds went by fast, and by 6:00 pm the Swiss was over, and the top 8: 1 Chris Dodson ( Stompy ) 2 Andrew Wolf (Wolf Pox) 3 Alex McConnell (Fruity pebbles) 4 Dale Lane 5 Travis Turning (Red/white) 6 Gordon Howes 7 Johnathan Dearman 8 Danial Mondragon (Monored) 9 Jason Oliveri got the VIP Atlanta Grand prix pass for Atlanta! I chose to watch Andy Wolf vs. Jonathan Dearman first round. 1st Game. Andy got off an early Hymn. Jonathan was playing Dwarven Miner and Aura of Silence standard….Doh! After some beat down Andy was at 2 with a danced Triskillion on the table, Jonathan cursed scroll Andy for the last 2 life. Andy calmly said I am at 0 life, consulted for the Spin and spun his own Triskillion for 3….back to 3 life! And proceeded to beat down and win the first game. 2nd game was fast, Andy got a Sheltered Valley mulligan! That is why we are going to Paris Mulligan starting January 1st. Jonathan got out a lion and 2 mishras, game over! 3rd game. Andy got off an early pox, and started cursed scrolling Jonathan.Jon got out a frenetic, but Andy drained the frenetic for 0 to get 3 black cards in the graveyard….spin the frenetic for 3, gain 3 life, keep cursed scrolling….Andy advances! I was sitting in the middle of 2 games, so I got to watch Chris Dodson vs. Daniel Mondragon match too. Not exceptionally exciting. Basically, first game Dodson got no land, second game, Daniel got no land, and third game, Dodson again got no land!!!!….must do Paris mulligan!!! Round 2 Alex McConnell vs Andy Wolf One more time, they meet again. Andy spanked Alex in Knoxville with a sweep in the top 4. I am sure he was still a little sour. 1st game. Despite Andy getting a great draw with above average disruption, Alex managed to pulled off the combo. Andy could not have ask for anything more, 2 hymns, 2 wastelands and a pox! 2nd game was fast, Alex got his revenge!!!! Finals Alex McConnell vs Travis Turning Fruity Pebbles vs. Fast red/white, should be pretty interesting. Now that they both qualified, the match was a little more relexing. 1st game. Alex got only 2 cities and……4 goblin bombardments in his hand, and Travis started the orc beatdown. 2nd game. Alex got a good hand, despite lion, orc, lancer beatdown, Alex pulled off the combo in 4th turn. 3rd game. In this format, I think from now on I am going to call tithe - summon tundra!!!! I don’t think they get any other land! Anyways, Alex got a good hand, force of will the disenchant and won the game. A well deserved win for Alex - someone that tries so hard! Well done! For all of you that said that Fruity pebbles is a lousy deck. Well, need I say more. Anyways thanks for reading and for those of you that attended the PTQ, thank you for coming, and we will see you all in South Carolina on January 10th.
