Newsgroups: uk.games.trading-cards.misc,rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy From: U Stroinski Subject: Worthing II - girls and MtG (the fundamental laws) - Challenge accepted To: mtg-strategy-l@oracle.wizards.com,assassins@prl.research.philips.com,Gavin_J_Cheser@SBPHRD.COM Date: Tue, 13 Aug 1996 08:58:08 GMT 2nd Jolly Brewers Tournament (Worthing) - the report - the 3 fundamental laws governing girls and MtG Ooh! It's already Tuesday! As you know I usually post Monday morning's, but ... oh well I had sort of a tough weekend ... to summarize it I present the three fundamental laws of girls and MtG. First principle (attributed to R. Garfield) If you play no or only a bit MtG you will not have problems with girls (because of Mtg). Second law If you play a lot of MtG you will have a lot of problems with girls (because of MtG). Up to now everything seems ok. The time you spend with MtG is proportional to the amount of problems you get with wife, girlfriend or daughter, but now it comes ... Third fundamental law of girls and MtG (also called Stroinski's lemma) If you play too much MtG the problems with girls SUDDENLY disappear! As an MtG addicted I am somewhere between stage 2 and 3 ;-) What about you? ... Seriously, we had a computer breakdown yesterday so I couldn't post. Knowing that not few of you (addicts) start their Monday by reading my report, I am really sorry I couldn't make it. I was asked what I think about MASTYR (c) the new magazine for MtG. Not an easy question to answer if you don't want to write anything negative. What did I find in the first issue? A nice article of Scott Burke about PTI (he gets paid for what I am doing here. Clever!) and an excellent article of Preston Poulter about Booster Drafting. For those who do not know the article let me quote Preston: "I won quite a few games ... by getting ahead on life or by getting out a CoP:B and riding my Pestilence to victory." SMART strategy! Back to the basics, I say. Want another one? Here we go. Preston describes how his whole team drafted 6 hours a day, 6 days a week and 50 weeks a year: "The members of the Pacific Coast Legends (PCL) developed one guiding philosophy when it comes to drafting creatures. "If it flies, draft it."" I wonder what they come up with when they start drafting 8 hours a day. What other news do I have? After their recent sucesses The Cardiff Cartel (Dave Maher 2nd at Reading, Clint Oldrigde 1st at Swindon) issued a formal challenge to The Assassins - UK's premier MtG team. They seem to forget that we settled that matter once and forever at TVX, where The Assassins scored a glorious victory over 16! other teams (Cardiff second). The Assassins team was: Paul Barclay, Jamie Badman, Julian Wiffen, me. With Jamie in the Netherlands and Paul still on holiday many think we are easy prey, but beware we still have Steve Preston and Lee Bohan (Mark Pui is on holiday too. Students!) Challenge accepted! See you and all other teams at TVXI :-) It will be an epic battle for the leadership in british team MtG. With so many Assassins away I am currently the Master Assassin. (For those of you who don't know that game. Beating the Master 2:0 in a sanctioned tournament grants you entry to the Hall of Fame on our WWW page.) You can recognize the Master Assassin by a Poker Card with MtG back signed by Jard (WotC UK). How we got that card? That's another story ... The first chance to enter the Hall of Fame via beating ME was last Sunday at the 2nd Jolly Brewers tournament in Worthing. The event was a charity event (pounds 250 income for St Barnadas Hospice) organized by Gavin Cheser (a friend of the current boyfriend of an ex-girlfriend of mine. The world is a village.) It was 64 players straight knock out (Can you stand the heat?) with optional optional draw rule (players agree beforehand whether they use the optional draw rule or not). Planned to start at 2 we waited for the Swinden team to arrive at a quarter to 3 and started. The time limit was 45min so I decided to play NewNecro. 1st Round Marco Cortese W/G ErhnamGeddon Marco's Father is from Italy so I could practice my italian a bit. In the decider he died to 2 Gloom and 3 Mishra's. 2:1 2nd round Simon Howard G/w Kaysa Not much he can do about flyers. I win 2:0. We play a friendly game afterwards, where I get crushed by 4/4 Llanowar Elves. 3rd round Matthew Trenhail R/G big fast creatures He nearly got me in the 2nd game. He attacked with all his creatues. I didn't block and attacked with all my creatures. Next round he attacked again with all his creatues for the kill just to get his Eron Banished. That left him tapped out and I finished him off. 2:0 4th round Andy Knight W/G ErhnamGeddon He won the second game by attacking with a triple GGed Erhnam. Ouch! 2:1. 5th round Daniel Victor W/G fast Big creature/Geddon Here the tournamet starts for me. You might know Danny from my reports about Polycon and Crusade VI earlier this year (approx Feb/March for collectors) He beat me in the final of Crusade VI whereas I could beat him at Polycon. Very experienced player. First game he got Elves, Birds Geddon and nothing for 12 other turns. I killed him by repeatedly attacking with a single Specter. I have never done that before. Looks really funny on my score sheet. Next game he was totally mana screwed (I guess he had more than 50% mana in his deck. Bad luck) 2:0 The Final against Dave Fry (Swindon) R/W/G Stormbind As you remember last week in Swindon I lost to Joe Agass another Swindon player in the semis. Hence spirits were high on the other side of the table. In the first game I played crap. I killed myself with my Necro (supported by 2 Bolts). Next game was big fun since I Drained his Orgg just to hear him say: "Better he drains the Orgg than me". "Wait", I responded. Just to Drain him for his last single life a couple of turns later. We had all big fun, joking around ... until he played a double Karma in game 3. That was not nice and I prayed for either Disk, Dystopia, Strip or Zorb. Neither showed up and I was killed by 2 Swamps. Well done Dave! Next week I take a break. In 2 weeks time we have Ealing Master of Magic II. Good playground to enter the Hall of Fame. Try it! I will be there. Probably with a new deck, most definitely with a new girlfriend. (Remember the 3rd fundametal law ;-) See you Uwe Stroinski uwst@maths.bath.ac.uk
