Subject: Extended Tourney Report 9/13 Honolulu Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 17:49:22 -1000 From: Kristopher Lohman To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Seeing as how the next Pro Tour is in the extended format, and that there seems to be very little in the tourney report department for that format, I thought I'd throw in what happened this past weekend. I read another tourney report on extended saying they played a "good stuff" deck, but I didn't find it to be all that great. What I used was something similar, a 5cg if you will. First the deck, then the commentary, tourney report. The 5cg From HELL: 4 Birds of Paradise Sideboard: 4 Quirion Ranger 4 Winter Orb 4 Erhnam Djinn 3 Pyroblast 4 Whirling Dervish 2 Tranquil Grove 4 Jolrael's Centaur 3 Disenchant 4 Hymn to Tourach 1 Mangara's Blessing 4 Hypnotic Spectre 2 Elephant Grass 4 Lightning Bolt 3 Armageddon 2 Swords to Plowshares 3 Savannah Lions 2 Mangara's Blessing 4 Undiscovered Paradis 4 Bayou 4 Savannah 4 Taiga 2 Scrubland Anyway, the deck is fast as a creature deck and has a LOT of disruption. Round 1 (in a 5 rd swiss tourney): RGW Glacierhaups This kid seems relatively new, but he has so much removal in his deck, that my creatures rarely stay on the board. Between his tariffs, wraths, and huge creatures, I get smeared the first game. The second game I get 1st turn bird, 2nd turn hymn, 3rd turn hymn, 4th turn hyppie and its all over... The last game is more of a struggle. I play the one threat game and force him to use two wraths for two hyppies, and finally clobber him with a two Erhnam Djinns, followed by armageddon. He concedes with a haups in hand. Game 2-1 Match 1-0 Round 2 : Necro This is the classic necro. 4 hymns, hyppies, pumpknights, disks, drains, and Lakes. The first game I get 2nd turn hymn, 3rd turn hyppie and its all over for him. He tries to recover with a desperate attempt to beat me down with a Laked Ihsans (that he vampiric tutored for), but he's losing the life and card battle and I have blessing in hand. The 2nd game is much faster. I go 2nd turn hymn, 3rd turn Djinn. He puts out necro to try to get something to save him. He puts out disk and thinks he's safe, lucky for me i put in all three disenchants =). He is very thoroughly crushed. I find out that he sided out his hyppies fearing my Sand Golems that I had been gloating about all tournament long (I never did side those in =). Anyway, you never side out hyppies, they are too big a threat. Game 4-1 Match 2-0 Round 3 : Monoblack utility His creatures are generally of the type 2 sort (crypt rat, nekrataal, knights) but he also has hyppie and hymns. I get lucky and double hymn him and stomp him with an Ernie. 2nd game I get out 2nd turn hyppie while he's manascrewed. I screw his hand and geddon...I can hear the fat lady singin' already. Game 6-1 Match 3-0 Round 4 : Senor Stompy This is an older guy, that has been playing a while, but I feel the need to take it easy on him; that is I don't force him to play tight. I get comfortable, make a small error and he pulls the tight game on me. I'm stunned, lose the first game and quickly look forward to stomping his old stalling ass. I kill him pretty quickly, but he stalls enough so that he can get a draw from me. lesson learned: always play tight. Game 7-2 Match 3-0-1 Round 5 : Monored Burn I actually expected to see this more than necro (red is a popular color among the Hawaiian folk). Nalu is a good kid that plays well, but the truth is...Hand destruction rapes burn. Game 9-2 Match 4-0-1 I end up winning as the only undefeated person. People are surprised my deck worked (as I am, since I did no playtesting whatsoever). I leaned my initial deck to beat red and black (that's why I'm using blessings), with enough disruption to freak out any control player. Add my sideboard and I've got a pretty mean chance of beating anything. One note: Blood moon screws this deck over...I expected it and sided in disenchants whenever I suspected blood moon. I hoped I had a bird out to do it, but in a pinch, untapped land will do =). In retrospect, I'd take out the elephant grass add a disenchant and two swords from my sideboard. Elephant grass was never used (neither were pyroblasts, but I didn't face blue). Any questions or comments? Email me at lohman@hawaii.edu --Kristopher Lohman
