From: "Janiec, Larry (San Diego)" Subject: Extended Deck Date: Thu, 21 Aug 1997 08:55:12 -0700 This isn't going to be a Generic Tourney Report, because I feel that if you want to, you can just use that form, and instead of filling in the names of MY friends, you can fill in YOUR friends. This makes it like Mad Libs, and you can even pick and choose who of your friends (and non-friends) I played and beat and/or got beat by. Of course, over the course of Extended play 2 weekends in a row, I went 4-1 both times, with a first place the first weekend (this one being the week before Worlds, Jason Zila got 2nd or 3rd in the tournament...) and then second place the next. The first weekend I played "Larry's Super Tim" deck, and then the next weekend I played Scott Larabee's (with some mods...) version of Baxter's "Good Stuff" deck. Was it Baxter? I don't know. I am still a scrub (the scrub team captain of Team Crius, but still a scrub) so I don't know all of the names yet. A note about the "Good Stuff" deck, though, is that the weekend before I won the tournament, the deck went undefeated 5-0. I handed it it's only loss when I won to give the deck a 4-1 for the day. Then, I PLAYED the deck the following weekend and went 4-1 with it. Of course, when I played the G.S. deck, I got "Xeroxed" in round one of the tournament. I got beat by a copy of winning deck from the weekend before. Ouch! He had some differences, though, but it was basically the same...pure permission. He went on to take first with a 4-0-1 record. Well, without further uh-doo... "Good Stuff" 4 Dark Ritual (Have to be able to go Swamp, Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter on turn 1) 4 Hymn to Tourach 4 Hypnotic Specter 3 Knight of Stromgald 4 Order of the Ebon Hand 1 Squandered Resources (too much fun to have 6 lands and then do an 11 point Fireball to finish him!) 4 Ernham Djinn 2 Fireball 4 Incinerate 4 Lightning Bolt 4 Sedge Troll (all of the mana-producing lands are swamps, so he's a 3/3 all the time...except after 'Geddon) 4 Badlands 4 Bayou 1 Mountain Valley 4 Rocky Tar Pits 10 Swamps SideBored (unsure of the exact count) 4 Sand Golems (If Hymn to Tourach was the drug of choice, then these guys are the DEA) 3-4 Simulacrum (When he says, "I 'Bolt you, I 'Bolt you, I sack 4 Mountains and Fireblast you twice," you can say, "OK, I cast Simulacrum, redirect to the 'Troll and regenerate it.") 4 Pyroblast (I could only find 2 last weekend, thus the loss to blue) 2-3 Anarchy (If I'm the DEA, then we don't want any other COPs on the streets) Maybe some Nekrataals You use the 5 sack lands to go get the duals, with the Badlands being the usual first choice, unless you have a dark ritual and an Ernie in hand, in which case I would usually get teh Bayou for the 2nd turn Ernie. Of course, I did this to Mr. Big Blue, and when he go 4 mana he CM'd the Ernie and beat me with it :( Larry's Super Tim deck 4 Counterspell 1 Deflection (Remember that 11 point Fireball, when he Fireballs himself it is much cooler) 4 Dissipate 4 Force of Will (How anyone can play "Big Blue" with less than 4 is beyond me) 4 Impulse (This card goes into almost all decks with blue that I play, it is SOOO good) 19 Island 3 Mahamoti Djinn (Best line I heard from my opponent playing "Good Stuff" was, "Hey Scott (Larabee), what does your deck do against 'Moti?") 4 Man-O'-War (This one goes in almost all blue decks...) 4 Power Sink 4 Prodigal Sorcerer (I use these instead of Zuran Spell-geek, because the original Tim is cooler) 1 Soldevi Excavations (More than one or two is BEGGING for a Soldevi-only land screw, and it was especially funny to watch the people that saw this in game 1 and put in all of their Dwarven Miners against it, even though I only have 1 in the deck) 4 Spell Blast (This one was questionable, but it is DEFINITELY better than Arcane Denial) 4 Suq'Ata Firewalker Sidebored 4 Dandan (This card was the key to the Turbo Xerox deck's sidebored! I say, "Island, go." He says, "Island, go." I say, "Island, Dandan, go. He is suddenly on a 5 turn clock. Or, against a Squandered Stasis deck, I had 2nd and 3rd turn Dandans, and gave myself a turn 5 kill. Really! A turn 5 kill with a Mono-blue deck! Senor Stompy is way too slow!) 1 Dream Tides (Stomp on this! I usually run 1 straight in, 2-in-the-S/B in type 2 these days.) 2 Energy Flux (for the oddball that plays a prison deck) 4 Hydroblast (Sooo much burn in Extended) 2 Sleight of Mind (Sooo versatile, can be used as "Counter target spell if it is a Pyroblast" as well as the usual uses) 2 Tormod's Crypt Thank you, drive through. Larry Janiec P.S. Any bets on Hymn to Tourach getting banned in Extended? Would you like fries with that, sir?
