Subject: Primal Stompy (long): Microtourney report Date: Sun, 14 Sep 1997 19:17:28 -0500 From: Shining Shadow Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy I came in second at a small tourney with this deck today. Considering that this was the first type two tournament for me since 1995, I am understandably very pleased. The NG's comments will be appreciated. All he got out was an Island and two Plains. Game 2: Eight turn kill. He managed to cast a COP: Red and immediately Sleighted it to green, so I dropped a Winter Orb and kept attacking with my 3 Elves, a Centaur, and Biskelion. Round 2: vs mono-red Burn Game 1: I get out the Rogue/Harvest combo on turn 2, and again on turn 4. 'nuff said. Game 2: He kills two of my Elves with a 3-point Earthquake, and then my Winter Orb comes out, to be followed by 2 Centaurs and 2 Rogues. He never casts (draws?) Incinerates. Round 3: vs Counterhammer Game 1: He Incinerates my Elves, Ranger, and River Boa. He has no creatures, though, so two Bears and a Centaur do him in. Game 2: He Pyroclasms several of my creatures away, and attacks with a pair of Sea Sprites, and Counters my Winter Orb _and_ Winter Blast. My first loss for the day. Game 3: This game takes as long as all my previous games put together. We struggle with a creature war, with him Incinerating and Boomeranging my Elves, Elephants, Bears and Boas as soon as I can play them. Finally, he casts Rainbow Efreet. On my turn, I play a Worb, he Counters it, so I play another Worb, which resolves. I then Winter Blast his Efreet and Sprites away, and my Centaur and a Ranger help me crawl to a victory. I finish at 2 life. Round 4: (final match; yes the tournament was small) vs Black/Blue Buried Alive Game 1: I start with one Heart of Yavimaya in my hand and don't see another land until turn five. Fortunately, all he had was an Undiscovered Paradise in play until turn three. I finally draw a Forest and put out an Elf, which gets Contagioned. Next turn, I sac the Forest for the Heart, and he Dark Rituals to cast Choking Sands on it. (Doh!) After that, he draws land for several turns while I don't. When I finally have two land in play, he has already cast Buried Alive, and returned three Ashen Ghouls from his graveyard. I concede. Game 2: This game, I get mana-screwed again, but he doesn't. I get my second land, and play two Elves. On his turn, he Contagions them both and then plays Deathgrip. Next, I play Thawing Glaciers, which gets Choked. Then I draw Forest #3 and play a Biskelion, and then he plays _Disenchant_ with an Undiscovered(!) I draw a Tranquility, but the Deathgrip keeps it in my hand. Instead, I am forced to play Phyrexian War Beast, which manages to hold off his Fallen Askari and Black Knight long enough for me to draw some more land. At last, I draw Winter Orb. I deliberately let his Stromgald Knight through, and he foolishly taps down to two land. I cast two Giant Growths on the War Beast to kill his Hidden Horror (he countered the first one) and on my turn I play the Worb, and the Tranquility. He rebuilds his mana for a few turns while I cast 2 Elves, a Whirling Dervish, a Ranger, and a River Boa. The Dervish grows into a 6/6 monster and I get him down to _one_ measily life. On his last turn, he draws Drain Life and kills me with just enough mana. Needless to say, he was overjoyed; I was not. Afterwards, we played two more games for fun anyway. Guess who won both of _these_ games? I wish I knew why I only get mana-screwed when it counts.... The Shining Shadow -- "I can't use what I can't abuse..."
