Subject: SC State Championship report 4 ya! Date: Sat, 4 Apr 1998 20:51:52 EST From: PsyTurkey To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Myself and Bruce Cline took the early morning trip to Columbia, SC and when we arrived there was about 40 people there. I did not sleep the night before the states, actually I was up all night preparing for the tourney and was choosing between playing my R/G sheltered valley deck or my Greedy Bastard deck. I wanted control without the blue...and with swords being legal, I went W/G: Creatures: 4 Abbey Gargoyles (anti-red) 3 Scalebane's elites (anti-black) 1 Autumn Willow (u can't touch dis) 4 Joreal's Centaurs (u still can't touch dis) 4 Llaonraw Elves (mana speed) 1 Rouge Elephant (a 3/3 for one mana + 1 forest in this deck is no problem) 1 Spectral Bears (anti-black) 2 Wall of Roots (0/5 + mana curve) Spells: 1 Sylvain Library 1 Serra's Blessing 2 Marble Diamonds 2 Moss Diamonds 2 Serrated Arrows 4 Swords To Plowshares 1 Wrath of God 2 Geddons 4 Disenchant 2 Miser Cages (greedy bastard) Land: 8 Forests 8 Plains 1 Brushland 2 Thawing Glaciers Sideboard: 3 Circle of Prot:Red (burn) 4 Crumbles (prison) 3 Divine Offerings (prison) 2 Serrated Arrows (critters) 3 Emerald Charms (so versatile) I know, I know, 4 Abbey Gargoyles??? Yes, and they were a pain in the ass. Against R/W you only can swords them, and R/U, you must counter them or boomerang them. My memory of the rounds are sketchy, until the final 8: Brook North David Davenport Mike Stewart Charles Becker (Me :) and 4 others I do not know Round 1 vs. Brook North (White Prison) I was sooo happy to play Brook, I designed my deck specifically against prison decks, and Brook is a very, very good player First game---he is short on land and I geddon early...I wait 3-4 rounds, then again geddon...and disenchanting his diamonds did not help. The cage helped kill him along with a centaur. Second game---in come the emerald charms, crumbles + divine offerings. He could not believe the artifactkill that I was packing. The last round I had a scalebane's elite out with a centaur along with serra's blessing. He had recalled for a swords and a wrath...but he was under his own winter orb. I draw off the top...Emerald charm...he has only a island untapped..I declared my attack..scalebane's becomes tapped via Icy..I then charm the elite and declare my attack again--for exactly 6!! If I did not, I would of lost control next turn. Round 2 -- against David Davenport (R/U phoenix-haups) I lost to Dave in the earlier rounds and thought I was done for. First round I manage to survive the early burn and outpace him with centaurs and a geddon for the win. Second round I was toast...the frenetics and burn just roasted me and I had no way of stopping it. Third round was interesting...yet to see any of my COP:red's I asked my deck nicely for one..and was blessed with 2! on the opening draw. He gets out 2 flippys and a phoenix...and I have out a abbey gargoyle..I then tell him that I will cast another one..and he says that if I do he will haups...so I dig deep with the sylvain..and there she was :) third card down...so I drop the abbey...he haups next turn, I swords the phoenix, and he wins one flippy flip...I then proceed to get hit for 12 points of damage...until the plains arrives...circle red sir, thank you :) I then stop all of his offense, all he can do is boomerang the circles, I then drop ANOTHER circle:red. I won eventually with the elite. Third round against Mike Stewart (5cg-maro) Me and him always wind up in the finals...last 5 tourneys we were at we were top 2. He is really a good player and I was worried, even though we both playtested against each other, we knew each others decks. First round I fend off a mean maro...followed by a meaner maro along with a quirion ranger feeding the fuel. I somehow swords both maros and get the arrows going. I barely won that one. Second round was horrible, one thawing glaciers in my opening hand. No paris draw :( I play the glacier and next turn draw off the top a forest. I play a elf, next turn I have tricks ;) I draw a plains, play a serra's blessing, attack with the elf, summon a Rouge elephant (First time all day!) and sac the forest. I then apply beatdown with my serra elephant and serra elf for the next 4 turns....until mean maro hits...no swords, no wrath...oh boy, oh boy..no sauce for me :( then I see a light, my Bitch comes to play...Ms. Autumn :) I then draw a elite and another elite to back her up :) = I win Props: To all the tourney coordinators for this event...you guys did one hell of a job To Sean Fleishman up in NY for all the help and skillz that you taught me To Brook for being Brook and for Dave cracking me up with those eyeballs Slops: The waffle house lady...shoot she could of been a beast of bogardan the way her attitude was towards me ----------------- Much thanks to all my friends that helped me on my way, there are too many names too list, thank you :) Charles Becker South Carolina State Champion, Limited, 1997 South Carolina State Champion, Type II, 1997
