Subject: I'd like to submit this: [TOURNAMENT] Date: Mon, 2 Nov 1998 00:41:07 EST From: ChampDjinn@aol.com To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [ TOURNAMENT ] Fellow magic players, This article is is regard to a tournament I entered on November 1st. It was the first tournament ( in the area ) that lost Mirage, Visions, Weatherlight, and gained Urza's Saga. With this in mind please note that I had to quickly whip up a deck the night before to play with. First I tried to conjure up a white weenie deck but then realized I play white weenie too much, so I went to the next deck idea. This next deck idea was Mishra's Awakening. Not having any awakenings this idea was quickly dumped. Finally, I made a version of Counterphoenix with alot of JANK in it. The jank included Somnophore, Great Whale, Morphling, Time Spiral, and Shivan Gorge. The main idea of the deck was to gain control with Shard Phoenix, Earthquake, and Whispers of the Muse/ Capsize while plinking them even so slowly with the Gorge and pounding them with unexpected fatties. I learned many things: 1. Somnophore = very very good against oath of druid decks. ( They bring out the Avatar, and you attack and tap. Another Avatar? Attack and tap. It shuts oath down effectively.) 2. Morphling = surprisingly STRONG. ( What stops it when you have mana? ) 3. Great Whale = coolness ( Bring it out, untap, bring out another fattie. ) Anyways, heres the tournament report you've all been waiting for: Style : Type 2 Rounds: 5 Top 8 People that showed: 18 1st Round: 2-0 Opponent: Chris Zaborowski ( forgive my spelling ) Basically this really sucked because we're both on Team Breakfast and we had to play eachother first round. The first game he tried to play labs and stuff and I countered. He beat me down with an Ertai and a Dominating Licid for awhile. Then I brought out the Morphling. He had a legacy's Allure with 1, and then 2, and then 3 counters on it.. but it didn't matter because in response to him sacking it I payed a blue to make Morphling to pump its power. Then he tried to gain control of it with the Licid... again I used the Morphlings ability.. this time to make it untargetable. The same happened both games. ( This is why Morphling proved to be useful. ) 2nd Round 2-0 Opponent: I forgot. Sorry. This guy was playing sligh and the first 4 lands a had put down were islands. He had 2 Raging Goblins and some other slighish creatures when out of nowhere I drop an island 5th turn, and cast a Shard Phoenix. I then sacked it. He could have sworn I was playing draw-go. After that I whooped out the bwat- down. 2nd Match it was all about the sideboard. It's a card called DOUSE. So many people thought that that card was cheap. It may be cheap but its effective. I won that game also. 3rd Round 0-2 Opponent: some stupid red player This round went differently.... my opponent was playing scrolls. Instead of sligh it was more like red control. Some how he beat me but it was probably because he was playing mindless burn, and I was playing a deck I made the night before that requires minimum thought. I kinda miss quicksand against thost early creatures you can't seem to counter. ( Sorry about insulting red so much, its just that I'm starting to hate it...) 4th Round 2-0 Opponent: T.J. ( not sure of last name ) I admire T.J. because he was the only person I say playing a Oath of Druids deck with Avatars and stuff. He had been wailing on everyone in the rounds before me... so I was a bit scared I might lose. I soon made a new friend with Somnophore. This is how it went: He would Oath and hit an Avatar, I would attack with somno and tap the avatar.. and play another fattie. He would Oath, and hit an Avatar....and the same followed. See what I mean? Somnophore should be called Som-yes-phore , because no is a negative word, and there is absolutely nothing negative about a blue card that shuts Oath of Druid down. Both matched were won fairly easily. 5th Round -------- Opponent: Shane Rack-cow-ski ( ??? ) Shane is a good magic player. But we didn't need to play. We took a draw so we would both make it to the finals. There is nothing else to say except that I WOULD have beaten him. :) FINAL 8 2-0 Opponent: Royal Champion This is so funny because there is a rumor going around that Royal and I are related. I think I speak for both of us when I say: "I'd shoot myself if that was true." Royal was playing Oath of Scholars with Scrolls, and Illusionary Pets ( Though at Jesters Court* we prefer to call them: Waffles..don't ask me......). Same thing happened here as in the others games... I gave him a spanking. ( Great Whale Style). * ( Jesters Court - the local store that we play at. ) FINAL 4 1-2 Opponent: HEY!!! its that stupid red player! How'd he make it to the finals? This guy just won't stop bringing out scrolls. Ofcourse, it wasn't just that that killed me, it was my scrubbish mistakes that screwed me up. ( For example: Whispering with buyback and the end of his turn twice, tapping out, when I'm at 2.) FINAL 4 ( playing for 3rd) 2-0 Opponent: Nate Helt ( formally known as red player) Nate was playing a Argothian Wurn- Vineyard type thing that was pretty cool... but his vineyard helped me cast a 2nd turn Somnophore, a third turn Morphling, a 4th turn Ephemeron, a 5th turn Great Whale..... you get the picture. I won the first game and the second game was a win thanks to a cool sideboard card called Hiberbation. Tournament Ranking: 3rd Place $8.00 store credit Sure the prize doesn't look like much, but its not too shabby for a jank deck. Maybe this will encourage people to not jump on the bandwagon and make an Academy Deck and just play unpredictable stuff... Special thanks to: Everyone I played, and my team members: Chris Zaborowski Brian Smith Jay Adam Wagner (a.k.a. Waffles, a.k.a. Illusionary Pet ( Barry Kruse) - wasn't there but hes on the team And so that is my report. Hope you all enjoyed it ! Keep playing !
