Subject: Tournament Report - Scarborough PTQ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 00:49:02 +0000 From: Steve Eyre Newsgroups: uk.games.trading-cards.misc I decide on Friday to bother going all the way back home to play Magic, and stop with my folks on Saturday night after travelling up with Mark Wraith. I've already decided on which deck to play, CP nearly won for me at Sonning the week before, and I'm going to stick with it. Decide not to try squeeze Dread of Night into the S/B in the end. Match 1 Daniel Atkinson Dan is a local Scarborough player, still at Secondary school I think. He's playing Living Death Game 1 His main deck Scragnoth is a bit of a monster, and when he starts the Spike - Stronghold combo going I'm in trouble. He takes this game. Game 2 I drop a Portcullis while I have a Phoenix and he has two Wall of Blossoms. I have Counter Magic in case he tries anything on, but the Phoenix goes ALL THE WAY. Game 3 I get a lot of mana and a couple of Intuitions. A couple of Phoenixes backed up by a Forbid lock beat him up 1-0-0 Match 2 Jason Turner Jason is playing WW, arrrgh! Game 1 It's looking good as I mana screw him at one Plains and a Wasteland. When he Wastes my Pool I have to Capsize it as it's the only way I can get double Blue and I have no Mana-Leaks. He shows me the Plains he drew that turn and makes a Priest. 10 turns later I'm dead. Game 2 I draw all 3 Drifters and a Licid and give him a real beating. Game 3 I draw all 3 Licids and a Drifter, and despite him getting a Cataclysm off, I give him a real beating. 2-0-0 Match 3 Jeremy Duck I can't remember what Jeremy was playing, I think it was LD though. I won 2-0 3-0-0 Match 4 Mark Kennet I've played Mark once before and he's a really nice guy. He was playing Trade-Awake. Game 1 I don't think that the deck has enough threats before boarding, and I manage to counter all his Whispers and never give him an 'active' Tradewind. Game 2 He's sided out his Legacy's, and my Dominating Licids take this game. Some Counter Magic probably didn't hurt ;) 4-0-0 At this point I was hoping to just ID the next 2 rounds, but then found out it was actually 7 rounds. One more win to be safe. Match 5 Ellis Romero Ellis is playing almost the same deck as me, only 5 differences in Main deck and S/B. Going to be a tough game. Game 1 Ellis is mana-screwed early on, and I Buyback Capsize quite a bit as well. I get a lot of land down before he is finally able to counter the capsize, and I just edge him out with the Phoenixes. Game 2 Ellis's T2 Shark nips in for 14! points of damage before I can deal with it. We stall with Phoenixes for a long time, but Ellis eventually draws his last Kindle and does me for 8! Game 3 We don't have enough time for the third game unless one of us is mana screwed, and neither of us were. 4-0-1 Match 6 Nathan Edwards Nathan is a local Scarborough kid who was at this point 5-0-0! He's playing a Hatred deck. He has pulled off quite a number of turn 2 kills. Game 1 A bit of Fire Magic and a T5 Phoenix wrap this game up. Game 2 I draw no Intuition or Phoenix, and just run out of removal and die. Next card when I died was a Phoenix =( Game 3 See game 1, + some C'Spells. 5-0-1 Match 7 Nicholas Moss-Allison We ID 5-0-2 Match 8 QF Dave Stevens Dave is playing a LD deck. Game 1 He gets a Thrull Surgeon going with his Stronghold =( I'm down to one Capsize in hand, 1 Phoenix in play, and lots of land after he does some Thrull nastyness. Next turn he casts Death, and I show him the C'Spell I just pulled off the top of my deck. Next turn he recurses a Surgeon, and in response to him using it I intuition for the last 3 Phoenixes. He takes the Capsize. I draw land for the next 4 turns, but am able to give him a pasteing with all 4 Phoenixes =) Game 2 Thrull action again here, and after a very long game invoving him casting Death lots of times (anarchist) he gets a Tradewind and two Scragnoths down, and bounces my 1 Phoenix. I am never able to get both phoenixes down, and die to his Srcags. Game 3 We only have 10 minutes, and after a bit of shuffling and some defensive play from me, there is no way he can win. He isn't even allowed extra turns as I wasn't stalling, and I go through by having a higher Swiss Standing. 5-0-3 Match 9 SF John Ingham Another local Scarborough lad, also playing a Hatred deck. Game 1 He makes T1 Sarcomancy, T2 Sarcomancy, Carnophage. I'm not even going to be alive to cast a Phoenix, and I draw no Fire Magic. When I am forced to Capsize a Sarcomancy, he shows me how much he hates me =( Game 2 He makes lots of creatures, but overextends on turn 4. I lay my fith land and make a Shard. I win to Sarcomancy damage (and Kindle for 4, Kindle for 5 ;) ) Game 3 My opening hand has 2 Island, C'Spell, Phoenix, Intuition, Dominating Licid and Kindle. I keep it. He plays out his entire hand very fast, so I don't need to worry about Hatred, just drawing a third land. I do, and Dominating Licid lays down it's life to take out two creatures =). He has a Wasteland and a SH out and my 4th land is a Wasteland. When I intuition for the fifth land, I tap the Wasteland rather than leaving it blatently obvious. My opponent didn't notice and I make the Phoenix. I drew land as it was anyway, and I had a kindle in hand so would have won the game even if John had noticed. 6-0-3 And that's how I qualified for Rome. Props Nigel and Ben: For another excellently run tournament in Scarborough. All my Opponents: For making Scarborough such a freindly place to play. Whoever: It is that keeps mana-screwing my opponents ;) (Lots of my opponents had to Paris) Slops GNER: 75p for a can of coke on the train! The Donkeys: For not being there on a Sunday =( See you all at Birmingham, Steve Eyre
