Subject: PTQ ROME Edison New Jersey Date: Thu, 08 Oct 1998 20:13:37 -0400 From: dan ford To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hello again. This Dan Ford of Team No Pros with the first...thats right the FIRST Tournament Report for Team No Pros. The tournament took place in Edison New Jersy on Sunday the third of Ocotber. There was a turn out of 58 people for the qualifier ( I would like to look into records as I think this may be an all time low :-( ). I played living death again, as did my teammate Phil Keffer. Eric Turnquist, Team No Pros official driver and supplier of cards played Humble-Prayer. We got to the tournament, and Eric saw Brian Schnieder, so we sat and talked to him for a little while before the tournament. I also chatted with Dorian, Fran and Brian for a bit before the tournament. Dorian was playing Fran's wierd blue deck from Cherry Hill, I still won't gove put the secret of this deck, as I am hoping she will play it next weekend in Richmond... but I will say this, it is like nothing you have ever seen before... Fran had Trade-awake, and his brother played living death. At any rate, onto round 1 Round 1. Played against counter sliver game 1. I see a lot of slivers.. I living death, then I see a lot more slivers... I die. game 2. I see a lot of slivers... I am holding a portcullis and a living death.. I need one more land to play them both on the same turn (Verdant Force and Weaver in the graveyard) I never do see that land... I die :-( round 1: 0-2, 0-1 Eric played against counter phoenix. In the deciding game of the match he lobotmized his opponents Forbids and his Phoenix's... and lost to the mogg fanatic that his opponent played on turn 1... Phil played the mirror matchup and won what I heard was a very interesting match me 0-1 eric 0-1 phil 1-0 Round 2. Against Shard Phoenix Game 1 My opponent never sees Blue mana and I run him into the ground fairly quickly. Game 2. Is a long game that last somewhere in the realm of 45 minutes. It is incredibly close, and after a 10 minute delay (looking for a judge to remove a large group of people who were having a party around my match) my opponent won Game 3. I have the game fairly in hand and my opponent and I both ask for the time we lost while waiting for the judge. He instead chooses to give us three addtional turns. The game ends with me having the game in hand ( two castable recurring nightmares and my opponent with only 3 blue mana and two cards in hand) round 2: 1-1-1, 0-1-1 Eric lost again... I do not remember what to. Phil won again... I do not remember that which he beat me 0-1-1 Eric 0-2 Phil 2-0 Round 3. I get the mirror match Game 1. I get tradewind lock fast and my opponent concedes Game 2 I get a portcullis and a living death, the only two creatures on the board are my force and my weaver... my opponent scoops Yeah!!! finally won one :-) round 3. 2-0, 1-1-1 Eric won one this round as well Phil won his round as well Dorian is 3-0 with the wierd blue thing !!!!!! :-) me 1-1-1 Eric 1-2 Phil 3-0 round 4 Shard Phoenix redux game 1- My opponent gets sub-optimal draws and plays what is in my opinion sub-optimal cards (Silver Wyvern) I win this one in short order game 2 A much closer game, I have a tradewind and a capsize in my hand and a verdant force and three tokens on the table. my opponent is at two life, with a phoenix on the table. He has enough mana to cast two counters and has two cards. If i don't do the two points of damage this turn I never will be able to get it through... I cast tradwind and he looks at the board and says 'That'd be bad for me" I voice my agreement and he counters. I cast capsize with no buyback on the phoenix, and he shows me the intuition he was holding. round 4. 2-0, 2-1-1 Eric loses this round Phil also loses Dorian gets deckchecked and has an illegal decklist :-( she later beats her would be opponent... she is 4-0 and out of the tournament :-( I am sorry Dorian.. your deck was really good and I think you should take it to Richmond this week (with a proper decklist of course ;-) ) Round 5 mirror matchup redux game 1. I draw nothing of interest Brooks draws lots of interest... you tell me how this one went game 2. I get the portcullis lock down with a verdant force and a wall of blossoms... he draws his capsize and locks me with my own frickin' portcullis... NO FAIR round 5: 0-2, 2-2-1 Phil wins this one Eric loses again ACK!!!!!! Me 2-2-1 and dropped Eric 1-4 (he look it's a tradewind). He decides to stay in and try to get a second win At this point I go across the room to say hi to Dorian and everybody. They were sitting around a table covered with food (there is a deli at the Edison qualifiers that will sell you enough food to feed a small army it would seem.) We talk for a few minutes and Dorian invites me to share some of their wonderful food. After that meal I think I would go to the Edison Qualifiers just for that Deli's food. Thank-you again Dorian (and Fran and Brian and Matt) the food was wonderful, as is your company at the times we see eachother. On to Round 6 (for some of us) Before the round we all rag on Eric and tell him if he loses again he will have gained the nickname Dreamprowler... Eric did not want to be a dream prowler... Phil.. well Phil just wanted to make top 8... so he drew... wow look instant Top 8, just add water... Eric did of course win his round and has avoided the nickname of Dreamprowler.. although he I do believe he will here kor chants of "fanatic beatdown" for quite a while. top 8 Phil Brian (Fran's brother) Phil's first round opponent (I am sorry I do not remeber the name) and some one with Trade awake, some one with a wierd red-white deck I believe some one with Counter-Phoenix and some one I do not know about Phil beat the guy with the wierd deck... Brian lost to trade-awake... Counter Phoenix won and Phil's first round opponent won Round of 4 The rematch Phil plays the mirror matchup again and again it is with his first round opponent. He loses in three very close games where both players played well but his opponent pulled it out in the end. I beleive he went on to lose to Counter Phoenix although I am not sure So counting my showing that is a second straight top 8 for Team No Pros... not too bad... now we are waiting for the LA qualifiers and possibly the state championships. Talk to you all then :-) props Phil- well, comsidering you call this your second game I think 4th place isn't too shabby Eric- for the car, the cards and the jokes (well, maybe not the jokes but thats another story) Dorian- For playing a cool deck, and being a very nice person. I wish I could make it down to some of your events and hopefully I will soon Brian- Your going to Rome on points you jerk... I wish you the best of luck, you definetly deserve it Fran- just for being cool, and coming up with a cool deck, I think maybe you should try to come up with a cool decklist for it since well... you know Brooks- For playing a great match with me in round 5, even if you did win... good luck with your playing and I hope to see you around soon Brian II (the judge)- I had some complainst with how you handled my second round, but other than that I was very impressed with your judgind, especially condsidering the circumstances Cheryl (spelling) It was fun hanging out with you and the rest of the gray matter crew... I just with people didn't like playing with my hair so much The rest of the gray matter crew- I would love to say something about each of you but this is already taking up too much space so I'm just going to say you are all cool and I can't wiat for the next time you come to Harrisburg slops no serious ones so I'm not going to bother for now see you all next time.
