Subject: GP Austin Report- D. Weitz 12th Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 21:47:18 -0400 From: "David A. Weitz" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Well, I often write reports when I don't qualify so I figured I should write one when I did. 2/3 Of Team Cock n Ballz made the 17 hour drive from Louiville Kentucky to Austin. (First myself and T2K Opalka drove from Cleveland to KY). After grueling hours in the car Richard Van Cleave and myself starting playtesting while Oompa looks for money drafts. I will not list our decks as friends are going to run them this weekend. Onto the tourny report. Strategy said that since I had 3 byes I would not face weenie so I made all 15 sideboard cards anti-control which ended up soooommmmeeee good. Round 1-3 Bye :-) Round 4 Random R. Guy playing death he gets mana screwed I capsize lock him. I guess I am good since I draw land. Round 5 Chris Pikula- Death Imagine that, team deadguy running Death. I should win this matchup I figure but I am playing a good opponent. We shuffle each other. I notice his sleaves are gummy. I ask a judge over to check the sleaves for randomness. They are. They still make him switch sleaves which is real dumb. I didn't mean for that to happen. Anyhow, game 1 he bends me over and rapes me with his fatties. Game 2 I squeak a lock in with Portculis. Holy Pikula! Game 3 he gets land screwed and I lock him quickly. Oh yeah, this round my Teammate Richard beats some other Deadguy by the name of Finkle. Some good. 5-0 Round 6 Randy Buehler- Counter Phoenix This was a feature matchup. My first ever. By now you figured I played Trade Awakenings so let me tell you this. Never in a million years should I win this matchup with Zvi's version of the deck. So I sideboarded in 13 cards and wrecked him. Game 3 triple Scragnoth is Btings. Randy played flawless but too much meat came down on him. Richard was the other feature Match defeating World Champion runner-up Ben Rubin. 6-0 Round 7 Richard Van Cleave- mono Blue We draw. We decided we both needed invites and this improved our chances. It was a dumb mistake but we live and learn. end of day 1: 6-0-1 6th place. Day 2 Round 8 Adrian Sayers- death I think The hotel sucked ass. My opponent didn't get his wake up call. I win by default. Lucky me. 7-0-1 Round 9 Tony Tsai- Tradewind Awakening I thought Tony was playing death since he was deadguy. When he dropped turn 2 shark on me I knew I was wrong. Game one I draw no islands. Game 3 he teaches me how good dominating licid is and it wrecks my day. Sigh. 7-1-1 Round 10 Siddhartha Rao- Tradewind Awakening Another one of these decks. Not good. Game 1 he draws more legacies than me. Game 2 I land screw him. Game 3 he shows me again how good the licid is. My day is starting to suck. 7-2-1 Round 11 Some Guy- mono blue curiosity This match-up is almost not fair. I have 2 more capsize, 2 more legacy allure and 2 more counterspells. He has manakin. Manakin is good. For me to poop on. 8-2-1 Round 12 Some other Guy- Death Well I miss playing Jon Finkle by one table. I still have to play against his deck. Game 1 was Awakening Btings. Game 2 I got lobotomized and victimized so I conceded so he sees not my hand. Game 3 goes sloooow. Time is up and the Judge gives us 3 turns for slow play. He is at 18 life and I only have a tradewind lock with the only damagers being tradewind, spike weaver. I win but not in 3 turns but I have to try. Extra turn 1 I damage with Tradewind and weaver to make him go down to 14. not fast enough :-( Turn two I topdeck weaver. Remove counters to tradewind and smash for 7. He lays down chumpblocker. Turn 3 I move counters from other weaver to tradewind and serve for seven. Rudy Edwards watched and tells me I was lucky. I was 9-2-1 One round left and I am still in contention. I look at the standings and realize the worse I can do is 13th place if I lose. Out of the 12 players that can possibly place higher than me 7 are already qualified which means invite for me!!!! Round 13 Heath Kennel- Death Yeah!!! Another Death deck. Good for me!!! Game one he gets land screwed and I wreck him. I am on my way to top 8!! Game two he victimizes me with thrull surgeon. yuck. Not good. Game 3 I have opening hand 2 capsize 3 lands 1 portculis 1 tradewind. Some good. the whole game I never draw another land and I lose miserably. Damn. I thought I had top 8 for sure and at least $800. Nothing like losing what turns out to be a $300 ante game. 9-3-1 12th place. Props. Richard Van Cleave- my teammate for Qualfying and taking 4th. He beat Jon Finkle, Steve OMS, Pat Chapin, Ben Rubin and drew with Darwin Kastle. Some good. Mike Guptil- the best judge in the business in my honest opinion. Randy Buehler- for winning a game with plains The Pro Tour regulars attending the Grand Prix- There is a lot of flame about egos and attitudes that alot of pros have. I didn't see any of that in Austin. Everyone was cool and it was an enjoyable enviroment to be around. Team Cock n Ballz- We went 2-0 in feature matchups. Qualified both players. Won $1500 and went 2-1 against Deadguys at Grand Prix Austin. Not bad for some nonames. The Dojo for inviting Team C=B to their next team challenge ;-) Slops Mike Yohman- the other Cock n Ballz member that couldn't go. We needed you buddy. The Hotel- everything is big in Texas even the roaches in the rooms. Yuck. Roads- If we lived in Europe I could have crossed many countries instead of 3 states. Longest drive I have ever participated in. Couple quick takes. Whoever this Mike SchLong guy is wasn't missed. I wonder who he is ;-) WE NEED SPONSERS team Cock n Ballz tore up the competition but we need sponsers for Rome!! We are poor.
