Subject: Extended tourney report 8/9 Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 15:06:57 -0400 From: Kevin Sechrist I've read everyone else's tourney reports here and on the dojo and finally have one to contribute. There was an Extended tournament here in Jacksonville, Florida at Big City C.d.'s & collectibles. I was going to skip it (I had to work), but when I got there, there weren't many people around (pt qualifier the day before in Orlando), so what the heck, threw together an Erna-geddon deck: 4 ernams 4 elves 4 elvish archers 4 savannah lions 4 bops 4 geddons 4 giant strengths 4 spirit links. 3 stp 2 disenchant 2 cop: red 2 mirri's guile (should have been 4 in retrospect) 2 gaea's blessing 4 savannah 1/2 remaining forests & plains. useful board: 2 cop red 2 jester cap 1 disenchant 1 mirri's 2 disenchant the rest of the board was useless. what I will be putting in: 2/3 cop black The report: Round one John Tatum playing g/b survival/death deck. looked like a type 2 with bayous. Both games, he was mana stuck either at 4 or w/o black. my deck rolled right through. 1st turn elves, 2nd turn guile & bop, 3rd turn ernie, 4th turn geddon. 5th or 6th turn spirit link, the next game was the same, but the elves got terrored. Round two: ? (sorry), playing burn. a little background, prior to the tourney starting I needed tundras and volcanic islands for my clone of weismann's deck and I swapped $12 to this guy for 2 beat up v. islands after talking a bit, he wants to playtest, since he was nice enough with the duals, I thought, sure. so we played 2-3 games, my deck rolling right along, him laying islands and countering the geddons, but not the creatures. this back fires when I've got 2 archers, a lion & an elf popping him for 6-7 per turn both/all of the games. He gets a disgusted look, then goes and starts ripping cards out of a binder 5 minutes prior to the start of the tournament, all red. so back to the tournament. He sits down and I was like, "this isn't too fair, you know my deck." he goes, "you know mine too, it's burn." "ok. fair enough." For the first game, I have 2 plains, a forest, a lion, a bop, mirris and the cop red. I figured with 1 extended tournament every other month, most people won't have good extended decks, so will play with burn, thus the 2 maindeck cops. First turn bop, shock the bop, 2nd turn cop red. him: "What? Main deck cop reds???" "Yeah...(explanation)" him, "good metagame". I eventually go to 11 when he drops a scroll (I've already disenchanted 1). at the end of his turn with 5 cards in his hand, I disenchant the scroll. he responds by forking it to disenchant the cop. triple fireblast, scoop. @&$*&@@!*@$. I had board control and the second cop in my hand. No more mister nice guy. in go more cops, disenchants. out go geddons 2nd turn cop, 3rd turn mirris, then just pull land off the top and occasionally cast a creature for him to use his burn on. he realizes could be a draw (for him, that's a win), until I blessing back in 2 disenchants and another lions. He concedes when I've got 2 cops on the board and a spirit linked ernam (from 4 damage back to 16). 3rd game just like the second. matches 2-0, games 4-1 3rd match: Travis playing necro. I now know why necro was so good summer of 96. 1st turn ritual necro, draw 3, 2nd turn ritual double hymn. ok, I don't need land or spells. I can rebound.... yeah, right. 0-2 in a hurry. Started good the second game. 2nd turn 2 elves on the table, end of the turn, consult for contagion, discard 20 cards, contagion the two elves. (I hate pitch spells.) ok, and I freeze on a handful of ernies, geddons and 3 land on the table. I still almost had him with him having 1 card left in his deck, and disenchanting the necro hoping to deck him, but out came the fourth in his deck to save him. no 4th disenchant for me..... We played a few more after and he consistently beat me. Oh, well. Perhaps sideboard dervish and a couple cop blacks. hmmm. something to think about. matches 2-1, games 4-3 4th match ? playing burn. Again, I get the 2nd turn cop red, but this time, no mirris and not near enough land. a scalding tongs and a scroll do me in. Ok, in comes 2 more cops and chants. not fast enough. his deck was a much cheaper version than the 2nd round, but still cleaned me out. Damn. I should beat that deck. matches 2-2 games 4-5. a distant 5th out of 10. 1 pack of exodus for my troubles: and a lousy rare, at that. Fighting chance. @&#*$(@. All said and done, a fun/well spent $10. I did play a bit of type one with my collectors edition power nine to moderate success. 2-0 vs a landtax/scroll rack/balance rack deck having complete board control at all times, with the exception of one time early in the second game, I was sitting on blue mox, land on the table, no counters, no tutors in my hand and john casts his very newly acquired unl twister. I was like, SURE! Thank you so much!!! he looks at my hand and curses at the 5 land and two disenchants. That's game. the second hand of 7 now holds 2 manadrain, a force of will, time walk, ok, end of your turn, tutor for the ancestral, untap, land, timewalk. ok. ancestral. ok, drop 2 more mox, untap, regrow the time walk, time walk, drop another land. Whew! now I've got a 5 mana base, 3 counters and the mana to cast them. Your turn... I never did see my mirror universe and only once my library, but it was fun. Props: All of my opponents. All the games were fun. Especially the type 1. Slops: None. Why dump on anyone. Last word: Anyone have any tundras for trade???
