Subject: Extended In Asheville Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 01:04:08 -0400 From: "Rick Saunooke" To: "The Dojo" HOWDY ! Well I said I would do a report if time allowed, so here it is. Sunday June 21, 1998 Extended at the STRIKEZONE ! Once again we find ourselves in scenic Asheville, NC. My normal companions have attended also. My wife Kim, and my buddy Greg. Gabe will be meeting us at the shop. Of course being that it's Sunday we encounter the normal traffic crap, but finally do arrive. Chomp some food quickly and get ready to rumble! This will be the last chance for me to play my current extended deck. The DCI saw fit to ban Land Tax from the format (a good decision though). We will be playing for a box of Exodus. Four rounds of Swiss, cutting to the final four single-elim. ROUND ONE Carlo U/G Carlo is a very new player, and has attempted to use a modified type 2 deck in this tournament. That would be a negative Carlo. In game one, he control magiced an armored W-Knight. Disenchant. May the beatings begin. Game two was just an awesome weenie swarm for a kill. Matches 1-0 Games 2-0 ROUND TWO Jeff Moore Goblins Jeff has been playing for quite some time. Unfortunately for him, I got his number. Out of the last three times we have been paired together, I won all three times. In game one, he actually goblin gernaded a white knight to stop the advancing horde. Game two was all about the geddon. Make that our last four pairings. ;)- Matches 2-0 Games 4-0 ROUND THREE Shawn Gearheart Goblins As I have stated before, Shawn is a newer player with phenominal talent. He seems to be my bane during the swiss rounds, and proves to be again today. Game one is all about the mox diamonds, until he plays a monkey and smokes them. This really sucked, I had an Erhnam and the geddon in hand. Game two is all about the landcestral and how it combo's so well with armor on a priest. In game three he gets the OOPS I WON draw and I go down nice and crispy. Just to be cute he tells me about the one Mox Monkey in his deck which gave him the first game. Thanks Shawn, I feel so much better now. Matches 2-1 Games 5-2 ROUND FOUR John Mahon B/R Randalish type deck In game one, its all about the land tax. Armor the priest and APPLY (Howdy Sol). In game two he takes a mulligan and is still PO'ed but continues on. He only has two factories for land in his hand. He finally gets a mountain, but its to late. I get the oops armor sure is good draw and SPANK ! I win. John and myself play another game for the hell of it, and he goes down once again. Sorry dude, but sedge trolls don't stop Erhnams, they go farming. Matches 3-1 Games 7-2 FINAL FOUR - Players and deck styles Rick with a tax deck. Kim with a R/b Sligh. Gabe with a extended version of 5CU. He really does miss the Serra's in T2. Shawn with mono-red goblins. I am paired up with Shawn. Kim has to play Gabe. ROUND FIVE Shawn Gearheart Goblins Game one is a massive rush of creatures. He had to fireblast a Erhnam and paid for tapping out because he wasn't able to scroll out the priest. Foolish mortal ! Armor and APPLY ! Game two, he mulligans, and gets the two Mishra draw and keeps it. Sorry dude, the Priest is wanting revenge. Armor up for nine. SPANK ! Although Shawn has beaten me twice this week during the Swiss rounds, he once again falls when its really on the line. Gotta love it. Matches 4-1 Games 9-2 ROUND SIX - THE FINALS ! OK - Once again we have a good / bad situation. My opponent is Kim, my wife. She is the ONLY undefeated player today, with only one game loss to Gabe. Of course we play on for the bragging rights. The same situation occured during the week and I smoked her, however, today she is playing a real extended style deck. On Tuesday she played a type two deck and still made it into the finals. In game one, it is the landcestral to the rescue. SPANK goes the priest - YOW ! The second game is all her though, to much heat and so fast. Wildfires shrug off passages and keep coming back for more. Game three is all her again. DAMMIT ! I draw one lion the entire game. My last moments were spent staring down a Wildfire and a Derelor. She attacks and I passsage the Derelor. She torches, Fireblasts and Forks it. OH FUCK I'M DEAD ! Matches 4-2 Games 10-4 So mucho congrats to Kim for the six round sweep. (I guess she got her revenge for Tuesday night) She only lost two games the entire day. KICK ASS ! The good news is that we will be able to play extended once a month, which is awesome. I love this format, but now I need a new deck to play. The hymn just got better though. I really need to give Exodus a serious look. The rest of this week will be very hectic so see ya at Origins.
