Subject: Lucky Frog Tourney Report Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 17:26:23 PDT From: "Jared Peet" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com TOURNAMENT On Sunday I participated in a Annandale, Virginia, Type 2 tournament at The Lucky Frog. It was a swiss style tournament with 14 players. I was playing a sligh deck that was not complete at the start of the tournament. So rapidly and with some help I threw in some cards that later in the tournament proved effective. The deck as I played it is listed and the substitutions are noted. 2 Ball Lightnings (Should Have 4) 4 Goblin Vandals (Should Be 2, proved very effective against Cursed Scroll) 4 Ironclaw Orcs (So-So) 3 Jackal Pups (Should have 4, found them completely ineffective because all early creature kill went to them and wound up hurting me.) 4 Mogg Fanatics 4 Mogg Flunkies (Should be 2, So-So) 3 Viashino Sandstalkers (Should Have 1 , I liked them more than the Balls because they come back again.) 4 Fireblast (Game Winners, very key) 1 Hammer of Bogardan (Should have 2, only drew it twice.) 4 Incinerate 4 Shock 17 Mountain 3 Wasteland (Needs and should have 4) 2 Goblin Digging Teams (Thrown in, not in actual deck) 1 Goblin Recruiter (Same as Digging Team) (4 Cursed Scrolls should have been played, but I didn't have any) Match 1 Game Record 0-0, Match Record 0-0 Game 1: I play Mike "Ogre" H. He plays this green deck that stalls by gaining life with such cards as Natural Spring, and then uses Mulch to fuel his constant mists. In the first game the mists come to late and 2 shock and a fireblast finish him off. Game 2: Uses Spike Feeders 3 times and Natural Spring Twice along with Wall of Blossoms and Roots to stall for a long time. Finally with 3 Howling Mines and an Anvil of Bogardan I cast Ancient Runes. He's taking 5 a turn with the emerald medallion in play. Then 3 Fireblasts finish him off when hes down to ten form 25. Fireblasts are very key. Game 3: His respites and natural springs keep my flunkies, fanatics, orcs, and sandstalker at bay. He's at 26 I'm at 20 when we run out of time. He brings stuff back with his gaes blessings. Match 2, Match Record 1-0, Game Record 2-0 Game 1: Jim is 0-1 so I obviously play down. The first game he uses Rootwater Looter to get rid of Colossus of Sardia and 2 Verdant Forces, but by turn 4 he has all of them out. I manage to knock off the Colossus with 2 Flunkies a Fanatic and a Shock. But his Forces and their tokens prove to0 many too fast. I only deal 4 damage because my direct damage and creatures are busy with his fatties. Game 2: After sideboarding one boil and 2 pyroblasts to stop the looters he just sits and discards for a while while I peck away for about 3 a turn. Just as he's at 5 and I'm at five I shock him. He has 1 Verdant and I have a Digging team in play. He attacks and I sacrifice the team. I'm at 4. Then with 1 incinerate in my hand and 1 counter in his, I know this because he told me to wait up on more than one occasion, I top deck the pyroblast to counter his mana leak and capture the win. Game 3 : He Paris's to 5 and me to 6. He gets nothing while I apply serious beating and knock him off in 3 turns. Whew that was close for playing down. Match 3, Match Record 2-0, Game Record 4-1 Game 1: I play down again, yeehah!, against a scrub named Ashish. He's playing a very slow form of what you could call sligh. I get a slow start but since he's slow I win with my many sources of Direct damage. Game 2: Another bad hand, without a lot of mana, just a mountain and a wasteland. I get by with some vandals. Then we kill each others creatures off. We both have 1 Flunkie in play. Finally I top deck the land I need to burn him to death. Game 3: Since we play all three games I proceed to apply beating on poor Ashish. When he gets a scroll, 2 turns later I draw a vandal, and Ashish, being quite the player, decides not to use his scroll period. There goes his chance and the game. Afterwards, i point it out and he sees his error. Match 4, Match Record 3-0, Game Record 7-1 Game 1: I somehow play down again!!!!! I play Justin Bonoma, this annoying kid who's very cocky and always loses to me. He's playing ProspBloom, and I'm worried because I've never played sligh against this kind of deck before. I knock him down to 11 with the help of his to Vampiric Tutors. He then contracts, then prosperities for 6. I think its over when he concedes. He drew 6 land from the prosperity. Yes!!! Game 2: I paris to 6 and he goes down to 5. I do my duty and apply a little bit of damage and get him to 14, while I have a Flunkie, Fanatic, and Digging Team in Play. I also have to Sandstalkers in my hand. He taps out using a meditate and that game, when I get the land I need to cast the Sandstalker. I do 9 damage to him in one turn. He concedes. Game 3: Sticking with his pattern of conceding, he concedes the third game because he is already out at 2-2. I'm in the semis. The Semi-Finals (Top 4) I've played down so much that I haven't faced any real quality decks that are in the top 4 with me. I get matched against Nick. The only guy I didn't have a chance to beat. The other two decks were sligh and a black deck I beat after the tournament for third place. Anyway, Nick was playing a green deck that used walls to stall then get Verdant Forces into play using recurring nightmare. Game 1: I get him to 5 but the Force and its tokens swarm me. Its over. Game 2: My sideboard couldn't handle green so that was it. I get him to 19 when he stalls then drops a tradewind to lock me down. That's It. Later I play the black deck after its been supped up and I beat it 2 0f 3. So I claim third. It was a good tourney for only $1. Props: Ogre for using unglued cards as rocks, scissors, and papers to determine who goes first. "Milk" for buying me a soda. The Lucky Frog for hosting a cheap type 2 tourney. James and Jim for lending me cards for my deck and sideboard. Eric F. for giving me the deck list. THe dojo for posting my report, hopefully. Slops: "Milk" for forgetting to bring the rest of the cards I needed. Nick for beating me, like he had a choice.
