Subject: Tournament Reports Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 05:43:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Paul Sweeting To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Type II Nottingham 15th August-SGD Once again myself and James travelled to Nottingham with hopes of glory and fame. We had already agreed to only play two to three rounds depending on time as we had decided to go and watch Mansfield Town play their first home game of the season. This was purely a recon and point gaining exercise so I decided to take my anti-Oath tech'ed SGD that I had previously sported in Notts and James took a ten minute constructed Fish deck.. Sorry, but I didn't take any names as I wasn't planning on finishing anyway. Deck as in listings, except wastelands and a forest replaced non-basic lands. Sideboard : 2 Scragnoth's 3 Phyrexian Furnaces 4 Emerald Charms 2 Tranquil Groves 3 Tranquil Domains 1 Sex Monkey Round 1 - Suicide Black He won the toss and cast a first turn rats of rath with a swamp and mox diamond. I played a 1st turn vineyard. Him, 2nd turn, double unholy strength on rats and stomps for six and two points of burn. I cast wall of blossoms, cursed scroll and birds of paradise. Next he attacks after taking mana burn and I chump block with the wall. Next turn I cast a wildebeest and another creature, getting me down to zero cards for scroll repetition. The wildebeest is thrown to the rats and mana burn/scroll action beats him down. In go my furnaces and he swaps about 5 cards and I'm putting my money on at least 3 perishes. He starts again with a 1st turn mox and a dauthi slayer. I start again with a vineyard J . He then lays a land and summons a carnophage, attacks for 2 with slayer. I then get out a furnace, scroll and birds or wall. His next go he attacks and perishes. I summon a monkey, killing the mox. He perishes again and attacks. Then out comes a spike weaver leaving me at scroll range for next turn. At this pint the game proceeds as game 1 with me combining weaver/scroll/vineyard damage to be victorius. Round 2 - Kastle/Nightmare/Survival Deck. This deck did well at the last Nottingham according to James who told me afterwards. I won the 1st game convincingly as he didn't see a spike creature/fallen angel or verdant force and I got my wildebeest growth engine going in record time to stomp his ass, recurring nightmare or not. All I sideboarded in again were the furnaces taking out 2 sex monkeys and a desert twister. This game did not finish and I forget all the details but it goes a little something like this. We both got fast, good starts. I get my spike weaver/wildebeest fog combo going to stop his fallen angel/verdant force (which he actually cast with my vineyards) beatdown. He firestorms but I manage to save my w/beest by moving weaver tokens onto it. I already have another weaver in my hand and lay it (I also have two furnaces in play and one in graveyard thanks to his monkey business). He seems slightly upset at another weaver and has to L.D to clear the board. I sack one furnace to kill the monkey and another eats his fallen angel. He doesn't get as many creatures as me as the furnaces have been snacking all game. I manage to get weaver fog recursion started again but he keeps up creature wise and my life total keeps expanding with bounced feeders. I realize that I could have won ages ago by beefing up my wildebeest but time is called after all my scrolls seem to have become lost and his spikes soak up vineyard mana. So I win 1-0 and myself and James call it a day. Conclusion James and I pull out both 2-0 after he beats two white weenies in a row. The only other decks that were 2-0 at that point were both Oath decks, so I never got to test my abundance of enchantment destruction. We both bought some Unglued cards and were impressed with the quality of this FUN set and the gorgeous land cards. C'mon Wizards, more of this quality and PLEASE BRING OUT TEAM UNGLUED TOURNAMENTS. That’s all for now until the Doncaster Sealed PTQ.
