Subject: tourney report (Std, cuneo blue) Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 14:02:18 +0100 From: Eric Hanuise To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Standard tournament report Brussels - Sunday 26 july 1998 'Aether Storm' tournament. using modified cuneo blue, based on J. Slemr's deck. Eric Hanuise - ehanuise@hebel.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- Went to Marcus' last tournament this sunday. Marcus' tournaments are mostly informal, and he uses to spread small prizes amongst the top 8-16 instead of big prizes for the top 4. This leads to a relaxed environment, with players playing strict but cool. I used a modified version of the cuneo blue deck. I played this deck last week in charleroi, and changed a few cards since last week (mostly cursed totems in the side since I saw many tradewing and green-utility decks, and some other minor changes.) here's the decklist : 4 quicksand 3 stalking stones 11 islands 2 underground river 4 city of brass 2 legacy's allure 1 reins of power 3 dissipate 2 dismiss 1 capsize 1 aether storm (artifact creatures are not summon spells. cool, uh ? :-) 3 impulse 4 counterspell 3 force spike 3 power sink 1 suq'ata firewalker 4 whispers of the muse 4 steel golem 4 nevinyrral's disk 1 Vision charm ------------------------------ 61 cards and the sideboard : 3 cursed totem 2 scragnoth 3 dauthi marauder 1 rainbow efreet 3 perish 2 hydroblast 1 sacred ground ------------------------------ 15 cards Round 1 - Frederik Baek I'm quite surprised, expecting the usual baeck brothers haircut (ie 2mm long hairs), to see he's got long hairs. I also know the baeck brothers are not bad players, so I expect an interesting match. 1 - I see man o'war, birds, jolrael centaur. I play disk, golem, then an aether storm backed with counters. he concedes. 2 - he mulligans to 6. he does play land, bird, then a winterorb which I force spike. comes another bird, I lay a golem. he armageddons with the two birds on board, then lays 2 jolraels, some lands and a suq'ata. Ooops ... 3 - frederik gets an early Worb, and I a cursed totem. he plays ophidian, and quirion ranger. The game is long (thanks to the totem :) I eventually disk but he does a superb comeback with scragnoth and a winterorb :( WLL - 0/3 points Round 2 - Serge Morlic Rw weenie/empyrial/blast. 1 - he's severely mana screwed, then recovers but I counter every of his attempts to play critters. I'm such a good player.... 2 - he mulligans to 6, and I quickly get control of the game countering like a madman. WW - 3/6 points Round 3 - Vincent Vanuyte 1 - I get manahosed, he lays 2 dauthi horrors and a kezzedrix. game. 2 - I mulligan to 6. this one is a very long game, with him playing plenty of critters, and I struggling for control. I eventually begin whispers recursion and get a decisive advantage. 3 - he starts with early uktabi and scragnoth. I persih :) Then comes 2 dauthi horrors and a scragnoth. I lay a golem, then later a disk. He plays living dead, I get a golem back, and he has 2 uktabi (disk and golem goes away) and a scragnoth. Yecch! LWL - 3/9 points Round 4 - Filip van Utterbeek 1 - he starts with a city, I lay an island. he firestorms for 1, discarding sliverqueen. I force spike it, not seeing the deck he plays. (stupid me :) he plays a second land, animate deads the sliverqueen. later on he gets a vampire hound while the queen is still on the board. I never can regain control. 2 - we both mulligan to 6, he starts. he plays the same trick as in game one, with a shivan this time, before I can counter. Game. LL - 3/12 points. Round 5 - Patrick Huge, 5C slivers 1 - he starts with very few lands but manages to get 6 slivers out. I get golem, plenty of lands, a disk and the capsize. 2 - We are both manashy, and he gets a decisive early advantage. I die 3 - he is manahosed and I quickly win (never seen that much mana problems on a single match.) WLW - 6/15 points Round 6 - some ketje, playing turbosvi (forgot his name.) it's a kid, no more than 14 in any case. He speaks precious little and seems timid so I don't know anything about him. I'm impressed he plays such a technical deck, however. that's the best way to learn, even if it involves a lot of losses :) 1 - I quickly suspect a zvi deck, so I hold on and watch him play. Then he starts pulling cards for the combo. I'm ready to counter the dream halls, but it never comes, as he concedes the game, realizing he has started too early. 2 - He starts the dreams halls thing. I read the dream halls, then realize it works for both of us. I allow it, and begin countering his pull cards (discard a whispers, dissipate your sift...) he suddenly realizes I'm playing that stupid 4disk/4golems/32 counters deck and concedes :) bad luck for him, really ... WW - 9/18 points. well, here we are, half the points, I should have done at least 4/6 so I'm disappointed. I'll have to be more careful at what I do next time, but hey it's sunday :) pro's goes to : - Sheldon and the guys from the dutch speaking part of the country for making the trip to brussels. (plenty of players came from far away, meaning a higher thanusual turnout of 45 players, and a very good level of play with names such as ben possemiers, peter gysemans, and Sam Goutsmit (that one is less known, but what's in a name ? ;-)) - Marcus for organizing those nice relaxed events Boo's to - thierry verhoest for being rude and arguing endlessly with the judges when a problem arose (can't believe this guy is 35+ when we see such a childlike behaviour :( - Magic for keeping me inside on a sunny day :-)) ------------------------------------------------------------ Eric Hanuise - Living proof you don't need a DCI rating of 1800+ to become famous on the Magic scene ;-))) Magic in Belgium : http://www.hebel.net/~ehanuise/mtgbel Touchy! : http://www.hebel.net/~ehanuise/touchy ------------------------------------------------------------
