People always complain when I call them a cheater. I wonder why? Stop cheating, I'll stop calling ya a cheater. Anywhoo, This weekend brought about another PTQ here in Houston. Being poor, I decided to run the table for BookBrowser instead of actually playing, and having Russell (the owner) hook me up with free stuff instead. Tim Weissman would be running it, and free stuff from him is usually able to get at (note: complaining more about not getting free stuff seems to get you free stuff w/ tim. heh) So, I take my new roomie/girlfriend/whatever (i actually introduced her like that at the tourney) to sit at the table with me. We're both tired as we stayed up till 4 am watching Saving Private Ryan (again for free, Chris Nolan is da MAN-ager of a theatre here). And luckily, i had no nightmares (the movie is awesome btw). So, I get there, knowing i want to play my oath deck (based loosely off of the 5cdonais version, and off of Bob Coonces version. BTW, I own 0 magic cards. That's the way to play, WOTC can have my money, I'll buy the cards, but just give em all to Ironman Mason. He throws a holy bitch fit when I say what deck I want to play, doesnt want to build it for me, but eventually does. 4 Wrath 3 Gerrard 2 Spike Feeder 2 Dissipate 2 Forbid 1 Boootie Gnome (member twiggy's droid gf saying bootiebootie?) 1 Shard Phoenix (I say wrath, you say damn) 4 Counterspell 4 Oath of Druids ohmygod did you just play a creature? :) 3 Gaea's Blessing I'm going to deck you sucka 2 or 3 Disenchant (cant remember exactly) 1 aura of silence 3 whispers 4 impulse lots of land (4 pools, never once had a problem) sideboard (to taste) 3 dread of night (ww bad) 2 light of day 1 gerrards why are you playing burn? 2 cop red, why are you playing burn? 1 disenchant 2 aura 4 pyroblasts (control? HAH) Sorry about the bad deck list, This version is decent, but I lost to WW everytime i played it, even with 3 dread of night fromt he sideboard.. (talk more about that later) So, the tourney starts, and Tim has 1!!! extra judge besides himself. I offer to do the land distribution. Almost every good player in Texas was in that room. (noticeable lack of Dallasites, David we missed ya!). Its fun turning away Austiknights cause they didnt write thier names on all three spots on the registration sheets (damn I'm a mean fuck). So, Tim says that earns me a FREE (the only way to play) T2 tourney (which wont start for a while) so I get back to talking with Christi. She's hungry, Russell's hungry, so I go nab some Burger King for me her and Ironman, and Subway for Russell (which I find out he hates), and come back to still no T2. Tim says something like "Hey Fletcher..." (after just announcing that the first booster draft was about to start) and i'm like, " you need me to run the booster draft dont you?" So, I leave Christi alone to fend for herself and take 8 of the slowest drafters back to the back and watch as it takes them a minute to read the cards. I've got the designs on whooping some T2 ass, and low and behold, another booster draft gets tossed my way. I can handle, I'm the man. Heh, i'm not even a sanctioned judge (I prolly would fail the test at this point), but I do explain that I am only an organizer (and so freaking good I cant stand myself), and tell them if they ever have a problem, just ask, and if they dont like my ruling, do not feel bad about asking for another judge, cause I know i'm not qualified (yet). This 8 finishes about the same time as the other 8, but as they are both down to the final 4/2, the t2 starts with 19 or so people. Round One (no names cause I dont have the card) Living Death/tradewind/birds/revenant/druid/null brooch/ertai This deck kills with revenant. Its a younger kid, and he doesnt understand how the oath deck works, but he gets game one because i keep a 5 land, 2 spell draw. Revenant comes over for some loving. Side in 2 light of day. and i think, one pyro. Take out a feeder and a bootie gnome (see later for more on this). Game 2, my deck comes out. He concedes instead of letting me attack with my 9/9 shard phoenix. Light of day proved to be key. Game 3, not much time left (this deck takes a while to play), but I clearly have control (he would argue otherwise, he's a kid) but I start whispering every turn, he doesnt counter with his null brooch (mainly cause i go wrath, he goes counter, i go wrath, he goes 'damn' i go disenchant your brooch, oath of druids, go. heh.) time runds out, 4 rounds of swiss, start with a tie, hrm, get to play the losers bracket, heh. *sniff* is that burn in the air? Round 2 suicide black, no badmoons or unholies, just hatred. Game one: turn 3 hatred, counterspell. heh. But i cant kill him, *sighs* volrath's stronghold bottle gnome repeatedly, annoy the hell outta me, realizing this deck needs 1 wasteland. recursive wasteland is way cool. he concedes when he realizes that I will start recursive dissipating his creatures every time he tries to cast them. Game two, turn 3 hatred, counterspell. conceed when fat feeder comes over. Again i sideboarded out feeder, and bootie gnome. Didya know that a phoenix kills EVERYTHING in a suicide black deck? heh. I knew. Round 3, bridge, brooch, ertai, man o war, boomerang, dungeon shade The first game was exceptionally long, i was buying back forbid every turn it seemed, and he was letting me whispers cause i didnt let him use the brooch or ertai ever. He didnt know what oath did, but quickly figured out *not* to lay creatures, so it was a long game. He conceded after i started dissipating HIS volrath's strongholded creatures. DAMN I NEED A WASTELAND. Second game time was called. I didnt need to stall, he was a slow thought-out player. Round 4, mono-blue deck. Equlibrium, propaganda, tradewind, dominating licid, killer whale(wtf?). He couldnt stop the oath from getting down. One of the two games we played, I was REALLY mana screwed, he had out tradewind lock with me only having 2 lands. (as in, he could bounce before i played a third). That's sum good. Instead of bouncing my land, he let me oath, shard phoenix vs dominating licid. Laff. I got the feeling this guy did not play competitive magic like I did, i.e. against the best in texas weekly. I dont think any of my opponents had that kind of experience. I wasnt able to see the weakness in my deck because these opponents couldnt use thier decks to the best. I win in 2 drawn out agems. Round 5, Semis. Final four, I'm like SOOOO willing to split, i'm tired, christi is so tired she wants to go sleep in the CAR (in houston, in summer no less, that's how tired she is, its like 10pm). We would all get 9 packs. One guy says no. We plead, He says no. All or nothing he says. He walks away for a sec, Another of the top guys is playing a G/w/r oath deck, and played him the first round. He's playing burn. I'm like, oh please match me up against this fucker, my deck so wrecks burn. He comes back, I get fuckhead. YES. =) Christi comes to watch. Sligh- He gets me down to one, I'm holding counters and dont even bother countering his shocks and kindles, I just take em like the man I am. He knows how to play against oath, as soon as its dropped, his fanatic takes out his fireslinger. Half way through this game, I realize he's a big prick. (christi agrees with me later). I come back from one, eventually getting to 17, he mumbles something about me being dead if it wasnt for gerrard (my good buddy). I cast gaea's blessing, shuffle, see that i dropped part of the deck, shuffle that in.. hey, wheere's my hand.. oh crap. Judge gives me a game loss. *sighs*. prick is happy. apparently says something about me doing stupid things and paying the price. KARMA come knock on my door. Cop red in opening hand with a gemstone and a plains. round 2 cop red, seals his fate. I think he gets me to like 8, but cant finish me off. He's friends have to convince him to concede after i disenchant his scalding tongs, his 3 cursed scrolls. recursive disenchant. heh. Third game, i'm at 72, cop red out, 15 or so land untapped, he goes shock you, shock you, fireblast you, kindle you, ball lightning, I go, ok. I'll take it. (didnt bother tapping any land), whispers in your discard phase, gerrards, back to 77. heh. you so crazy! Me and oath guy split and get 19 packs a piece. I go watch Ironman Mason who is just now finishing the final 8. I tell people if he wins, i'll cry (he's my twin brother, i'd be so happy). He loses to Andrew. Its two quick, damn i'm already dead games. Andrew had a much better deck (he probably ended up winning, but we didnt stick around). Thoughts on the new oath technology. Soltari visionary is bad. bad bad. I really like this deck, and plan on playing it again, but with some modifications, like lessening the creature count. remarkably, 4 is too many. i'm going to go down to 2, one feeder, one shard phoenix. Its a wrath and a kill card all in one.
