Subject: First Danish Tournament Report(?) Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 11:33:02 PDT From: "Boris Hansen" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Tourney report by Boris M. Hansen, belgarion1@hotmail.com First off, I'd like to mention that I believe this to be the FIRST DANISH Tourney report on The Dojo. Until someone proves me wrong, I will take credit for that... :-) Since I was so desperate to send in a report to let people know that Denmark hasn't been nuked from the face of the Earth, I didn't have time to find a larger tourney to report on, so here is my recap of a 6 man Type II tournament.. :-)) Only five rounds, that is, and the one with the most points would be the winner. I played at a local store named Goblin Gate (in Århus) with a Suicide Black (I think I'll call it Hansen Black ... because I can). ----- Hansen Black: 4 Dauthi Slayer Good, strong Shadow. 4 Foul Imp Also an evasive creature 4 Black Knight Of course.. it's such a good, solid creature. 4 Unholy Strength prefer this to Bad Moon as it can give you a real power start. 4 Sarcomancy Don't mind the drawback, this card is also great for power starts. 4 Carnophage See Sarcomancy 4 Dark Ritual What can I say? Most important card in deck. 1 Dauthi Horror Just to fill in, as I needed an evasive creature. Not optimal in mono-black decks. 3 Terror Don't think I need to explain .. strong creature removal. 3 Spinal Graft See Unholy Strength 2 Infernal Tribute Very good when the steam goes off after seven or eight rounds. 2 Hidden Horror Good with Dark Rituals, but also seems to bother red Sleigh. 1 Hatred Would've played with more than one, but didn't have more. Great surprise card. 1 Kaervek's Spite For the final blow, which can often be required. ----- 1 - Merfolk Deck Only problem here was the Legacy's Allure which took some of my shadows in the first match, thereby killing me, but sideboarding in Pyroblast actually saved me in the second, and the third I won on regular horde rushing. 2-1, 1-0 2 - Red/Black deck using Brooch/Scroll/Bridge.. you get it. Strangest game of Magic I've ever played. First game ended in a draw as I killed both of us... he had Spellshock in play, and playing a Hatred on my creature cost me vital damage points, but destroyed him also. Second match left us both helpless as he had two Spellshocks in play, with me on 5 lives and him on 1. He would, of course, in such a situation be satisfied with a draw, which required for him to give me 5 damage with a single spell. Since he also had a Bottomless Pit on the table, we both sat there discarding, drawing, discarding, drawing... We counted our libraries, and saw that he would be deckrunned first. He didn't know, though, whether he had 3 or 4 kindles, and a 4th kindle would be able to deal the 5 damage... Well, it wasn't there, and I won. 3-1-2, 2-0 3 - Green/Blue deck using walls, legacy's allure and stampeeding wildebeests I hate when I can't really write anything important about a match, but nothing really happened, except I got some strong early creatures on the table. Didn't see much of his deck. My Terrors were put to good use here, against a Wildebeests and a Wall of Roots. 5-1-2, 3-0 4 - Monored Sligh Okay, can't get around the fact that I lost the first game due to a HUGE mistake on my behalf. I could've finished him off with a Hatred when I had a Foul Imp and a Hidden Horror in play. Instead of logically playing Hatred on the large creature, I put it on the Imp, which he could destroy easily, and then win the game. Second game I outraced him, providing beatdown early on, but third game I lost because of seeing only two lands. 6-3-2, 3-1 5 - Monoblue Counter/Bouncy - Final round. Well, I started out by putting him at 1 life in no time, but I couldn't seem to distribute that last point due to his excessive amount of counterspells. Anyway, while I'm drawing frantically from my librarry to find something useful, we suddenly discover that a Capsize of his is turned face up! We consult the judge, who gives him a warning (not a serious one, after all it was just a friendly tournament). Anyway, a few minutes later, the incident is repeated, this time with a Mana Leak. Not good. The judge says that my opponent will lose the first round ... unless I say it's okay. I'm sure to lose the round, but since I knew that he wasn't cheating, it wouldn't really be fair to take that advantage, so we agree to split to prize. We play two rounds just 'for the record', and I win because of early creature beatdown. Yoo hoo. Don't blame me for writing a report on such a silly tournament .. after all, my primary goal was to contribute the first Danish report to The Dojo. -Boris M. Hansen, Team Fugu Vader
