Subject: Type 2 Tourney Report Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 15:08:03 -0500 From: "J. A. Tony Mullins" To: Hey Frank, The following is a quick report on a standard tourney that occured Saturday July 18, at the Merchant Gamer in scenic Cookeville, TN. It was a good turn out for our local store with around 20 people there to put up 3 bucks for a shot at some Store Credit and to have a go with the new Exodus influenced environment. The recent success of Weenie at both nationals and here at the local level, demanded a deck that performed well against both Armored Priests and Hatred Dauthies. Black is very popular here locally and my partner Dave Ballard and myself strived to find decks that we felt would play well against the myriad Weenies we expected to see. White Weenie had won a string of local tournaments but playing it seemed too obvious. Neither of us was thrilled with the prospects of facing both Gloom and Dread of Night all day long so we opted for something else. Ballard chose to play the recently maligned Sligh as it blistered SuiBlack and split about 50 / 50 with WW. As long as nothing pro-red received armor in the first couple of turn, he had a good shot at winning the first and hoped that a heavy anti-white sideboard would see him through. I chose to play a mix between Lance Shrader's Good Stuff/Peaches deck and the current survival of the fittest decks. Lance is a buddy of mine from down in Savannah who I had "tournied" with while I was in grad school. He recently shocked everyone at the "Meatgrinder" by playing a "kitchen sink" B/U/G Peaches deck, qualifing for nationals ( Mongrel Pack + Corpse Dance + Angel = whhuup pahhh). At any rate the deck list is very similar to the current Neutral Ground Atlanta "Survival of the Fattest" deck so for the sake of brevity I'll not list it here. The main difference being in the selection of the sideboard cards to reflect local environment and the addition of Shrader's cutthroat's in the main as well as one or two other minor changes. So with Shrader/Schneider top secret "fatty tech" we were off to apply... Round 1 Beck R/BLK Weenie Mogs, Surgeons, Carny, etc. Game 1 I go forest, bird done: Him mountain, Mog no sack to kill bird? Cool! Turn 2 swamp, survival done: Him swamp carny, attack still doesn't kill bird. I proceed to "survival like mad" throwing Freak and Queen into graveyard. Munchin' on Peaches and playin' broken wall as he plays critter after critter. My 2nd cutthroat utterly stalls shadow dudes and eventually Living Death brings on the Fattness. Game. Game 2 He goes swamp, carny: Me forest, bird done. I have broken storm in hand and wait as he drops about 4 critters and dinks away. I finally storm his dudes after he's edicted/ shocked/ incinerated my defense away leaving me on about 8. he begins dropping more dudes eats my land with a settler and I final get some Peaches and wall defense thanks to hermit loaded graveyard and recuring nightmare peaches. Before long fattness arrives. Game. 1- 0 2-0 Round 2 Bobby WW Game 1Bobby had beaten me in the finals of last weeks Ext. tourney in a WW vs WW crap shoot. He was visibly shocked when I went forest, bird done. He responds with a 1st turn Priest. I get 2nd turn survival and am cruising. He second turns armor and thumps for 5 or so I "survival" for eagle pitching Revenant. Eventually get peaches & hermit action going and splatter bobby with a 13/13 Revenant who was more than happy to be recurred by a wall of broken. Game. Game 2 Bobby again with second turn armor, this time on a warden. A horrible beating begins as I see no dread, no charms, no walls, no peaches, no way. I lose. Game 3 I don't recall all the details but we had only 10 minutes or so to finish ( we were playing only 45 minute rounds). A long drawn out affair with a couple of 'geddons and me getting pummeled until a cutthroat ( Thank you Lance) and a huge automaton (Jay as ever is correct about this one) show up to hold off his priest and knights. The automaton eventually goes all the way. Game. 2-0 4-1 Round 3 Tommy Control/ Forbidianesque Game 1 Tom has no Spike as I 2nd turn survival. I then 187 as much as possible, eventually getting off a Living Death after the Druid had done his thing. Verdant Freak/Angel beat down ensues. Game. Game 2 Tom is victimized by another early survival and we both are rather surprised by how badly counterspells work with an oath of ghouls(sideboard) in play. Tom takes it all in good stride as I proceed to "maverick" every card I sideboarded (oaths and pyro's). More fatty beatdown. Game. 3-0 6-1 Round 4 Jeremy Blk/Rd common Weenies Game 1 Jeremy goes 1st turn mog: I have no bird, wall, or survival but have both Living Death and firestorm in hand so I'm not too concerned. He applies beatings and continues to lay critters getting rid of my defense with edict, incinerate, shock, you name it. I Living Death and then some 'Yummy" Peach Goodness (they're nature's candy you know) show's up and I begin to crawl back toward double digit life total. Again he starts laying critters and I'm forced to throw a 'storm.' Somehow after casting every peach in the deck I manage to find recurring action and pull out peaches and Freak. Game Game 2 See game 1. I wait and wait for either of the Firestorms or Elephant Grasses to show up to no avail. Somehow the walls of broken decide to get in the game and an Angel goes huge. Game. 4-0 8-1 So ends the rounds of swiss with me in 1st and Ballard going 3 and 1, losing only to Jeremy's all common deck. Round 5 'Peanut' MoMa Game 1 & Game 2 See Round 3 with Tommy. Peanut is good friend of mine who practices out at my place on Mondays. He had seen the all Shrader version of the deck and new what would happen after an early survival. He watched on in amusement as I 187ed everything and we both had to chuckle when I actually cast a Spirit of the Night. Game 1. Game 2 featured more ghoulish oath action. Game. 5-0 10-1 Round 6 Stuart Counter Steele Game 1 & Game 2 See above. Early uncountered survival spells 187-death for Men of Steele. Fat dauthi courtesy of Yummy Peach and even the druid gets in on the early beatings. Eventually,(after WOG) Fat verdant freak applies beatings.Game 1 and Game 2. 6-0 12-1 Round 7 Bobby and I meet in the finals and split the pot as I must go home and cook Yummy Chili for dinner. My Fiance is well pleased that I make it home to start said chili before friends from out of town arrive. Props to all and slops for none. All comments and advice welcome.
