Subject: Tournament Report Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 19:34:56 PDT From: "Granger Petersen" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I played a local tournament on 7/15/98 at Fantasy Games in South Bend, Indiana. Twenty-five players are about the average that show but the competition includes many of the best players in the state. Format is four rounds of swiss followed by best eight in a single elimination playoff. Standard Mulligan is used. The deck I played: 3 goblin vandals 4 mogg fanatics 4 jackal pups 4 mogg flunkies 4 suq'ata lancers 3 rathi dragons 2 viashino sandstalkers 4 shock 4 incinerate 4 fireblast 3 cursed scrolls 19 mountains 2 wasteland Sideboard: 4 wall of diffusion (suicide black other sligh decks) 3 pyroblasts 2 shattering pulse 2 jinxed idols (white weenie) 2 nevinyrals disks 2 havoc I was expecting relatively high amount of suicide black due to it's preformance the previous week. The only other deck I was expecting in great numbers was white weenie as it has been very popular there. First Round (forgive me if I have forgotten the majority of my opponents names) Black Weenie (not suicide balck) 1st game: I win toss and get out a couple of weenies. I shock his black knight until I have him down to 8. He Nekrataals my rathi dragon but I play a cursed scroll and finish with fireblast. I decide not to sideboard 2nd game:Almost identical to first but he does get a little closer to gaining control. This guy was relativelyy new to the game and I he doesnt have the cards to run truely efficient black weenie but he didnt do that bad with what he had. Matches 1/0 Games 2/0 2nd round White Weenie 1st game: double mulligan no land for me but he is has only one land and two soul wardens my land comes to late and I die to a Soltaori Priest he is at 17 life. I sideboard in the Jinxed Idols, Havocs, and disks. I take out the tree vandals, both sandstalkers and a fireblasts. 2nd game: I get out a couple of weenies to attack with andshock the early Soul Warden. I get a second turn Havoc. After a short time he gets out the inevitable prot red creatured and several other shadows. I kill what I can with direct damage but he is out racing me with the new white enchantment that prevents red or black damage by putting cards on top his library. I draw a Jinxed Idol and we begin trading it back and forth. I have enough burn to limit his creatures and he is forced to redraw the same card to stay alive longer. 3rd game: Same as first game except I get the Jinxed Idol early on and enough burn to control his other creatures. He is killed becuase he again he must draw his own cards to stay alive for a short alive. Matches 2/0 Games 4/1 3rd Match Red/Green/Artifact with cheap creatures, giant growths, bloodlusts and burn. Reminded me of Ice Age R/G burn decks 1st Game: I get out a few weenies as does he we trade for a short time and I burn a couple. A cursed Scroll keeps his creatures down while Burn I him for the last 7. I take out the vandals and replace them with the Jinxed Idols and a disk. He doesnt seem to have anyway to replenish his hand so I hope for early removal and a jinxed idol. 2nd game: get what Ii hope for but he begins to attack with Scryb Sprites!! I know a few out of the air and take a couple of giant growths. In the end he dies to a Jinxed Idol and a fireblast. This deck was more effective than it sounds not able to hold its own in a big tournament or against sligh but it did get to 2 and 0 against at least one other decent deck. It just needed mid or late game damage. Match Record 3/0 Game Record 6/1 By now I am feeling good but I have also been lucky I have played decks that do the same thing as Sligh but slower or less consistantly I know that there are 4 oath of druid heal decks and at least 2 tradewind rider decks neither of which I do well against an most of which have gone 3 and 0 or 2, 0, and 1. Match 4 Oath of Druids Game 1 I draw one land but he has no mana either I get out lots of weenies. He dies with 2 forests out and two spike feeders in hand. I put in three pyroblasts and take out three vandals. Game 2 I mulligan initially and he chooses to go first I see five Islands and a couple of counterspells. I protect a creature with a pyroblast and win on the 5th or 6th turn. This was pure luck he drew only one color of land in both games. This is also why I am playing Sligh it tears apart combo decks if they dont draw reasonably well. I am ranked 1st but there are 3 Oath of Druid decks antwo Trade wind decks in the final 8. Match Record 4/0 Game record 8/1 Final 8 1st match (and my last) The 8th and 9th seed left early think they were eliminated leaving me to play against the 10 seed. White Weenie with a splash of red for incinerates shocks and sideboard. 1st game He gets out quick creatures that I am forced to use burn on. I get out weenies late and the die to his burn. I drop a Rathi Dragon and he makes a mistake earthquakeing for five. I finish him with burn next turn. I put in the Idols and Havocs taking out Vandals and Fireblast. 2nd Game He draws only a mountain it isn't pretty. He dies qiukly. The final four consists an Oath of Druid decks, me, and 2 Tradewind decks featuring survival of the fitest and lining death. I am paired up against Tradewind decks but before we start a 4 way draw is proposed by Elihu (dont remember last name) who is playing the Oath of Druid deck. He played his opponent to a draw in the tournament in which one game was not completed in 70 minutes both have Gaeas Blessings. I accept the draw after think a minute or two and realizing my chances are slim against any of the remaining decks. We split a box of Exodus with the store credit earned and each of us has five dollars credit left. Can anyone suggest a good sideboard card against oath of druid decks for sligh?
