Subject: type 2 tournament, harrisburg,Pa Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 12:31:39 -0400 From: ccott@mindspring.com To: Hi All, I would like to thank Frank in advance for posting this report. This is my first tourney report, so please bear with me..... Legends and Heroes was running a sanctioned Type 2 with booster draft following. I had been toying with an Oath of Druids deck but didn't feel that it was quite there yet, so I decided to play a deck I made a month earlier and had been tweaking. Its mainly U/W with a splash of green and red. Although the deck has many staple cards, I thought it was fairly original. Man, was I wrong! Anyhow, I was expecting a lot of mono red and black and sideboarded accordingly. However, in this area, nobody EVER plays what is expected. :[ Here's my deck. I call it 4 C Sky: 4 man o war 3 soltari priests 3 soltari monks 2 paladin en vec 3 wall of blossoms 2 sky spirit 4 empyrial armor 2 mox diamond 4 propaganda 3 winter orb 4 mana leak 3 cataclysm 1 firestorm 1 aura of silence 9 plains 7 islands 4 undiscovered paradise 2 city of brass side 4 chill 3 light of day 3 sleight of mind 2 disenchant 1 winter orb 1 firestorm 1 jesters cap (vs the growing # of combo decks.....) 4 rounds of swiss with a final 4 (mebbe 20 people showed up???!!!) Round 1 vs Brian ? game 1: he plays duskrider, I play shadow. He plays armor, attack. I play armor, attack.(great...same deck?) he plays paladin (yep...same deck), I play second armor. I have man o war in hand. All I have is plains. I die. game 2: In go disenchants. During this game I realize he is playing propageddon, but this time cataclysm rules! A well timed cataclysm is tough to beat. I win. game 3:I get a good draw with first turn mox and shadow creature. The creature race is on, but I had a head start. After the match we look at each others deck and see they're almost identical except for mebbe 6 cards. So much for originality. Record: 1-0 Round 2 vs Mike Pae Yay....I have to play my teammate of our unofficial Team Losers. He was kicking my butt the night before with his Steel Curtain deck. Yay again.... game 1:He's mana screwed. I win. game 2:I side in my 4th winter orb. I'm mana screwed. He shows me the 6 counterspells in his hand. He wins. game 3:Finally a good match. I wish I wrote down details after every match, but I didn't. He has a golem out which I man o war. He counters it, which ends up being his big mistake. He needed that counter later that game as I cataclysm (countered), drop the orb, attack with armored shadow. He's at 3. I have a firestorm and red mana :) Record: 2-0 Round 3 vs Scott Bell I was glad to see another friend of mine at 2-0, but I hate playing my friends in tourneys....oh well... I already know he's playing a funky version of burning bridge with null brooch and oath of scholars to cycle through his deck. It actually works fairly well... game 1: All about aura of silence and pro red creatures early. I win. game 2: see game 1. ( in retrospect, I see I was very lucky getting the only aura I have in the deck on my draw. I always said I'd rather be lucky than good. Mebbe its my topdecking skills........nah! Wishful thinking!) Record: 3-0 Round 4 vs Mike Fluke game 1: I am mana flooded. He wins. During the course of the short game I see much resemblence in decks. That originality thing again...... game 2:I have the man o war answer to every creature and shadows go all the way. game 3: I drop a couple creatures early. Play propaganda. Play cataclysm. I have a shadow which can attack freely while he has a paladin. Priest goes all the way. Record: 4-0 First seed in the finals 1 me...4 C Sky 2 Lionel Thompson....Stasis 3 Brian ?...propageddon 4 ? (sorry I didnt get the name)...Tradewind-dancing gnomes-living death- counterdeck Round 5 vs ? game 1:he's mana screwed. I win. game 2: he has the man o war answer for all my creatures (sux when an armored guy is bounced :[ game 3:I have early shadow beatdown, then drop an orb which shuts down his counterspells. I armor a shadow guy....game. FINALS vs Lionel Thompson Lionel is a very good player and I know he knows his deck inside and out. He ALWAYS plays stasis.... game 1: This is all about winter orb. I dropped the orb, backed by a mana leak. The game progresses slowly, as we BOTH have double propaganda on the board. Stasis then hits the board and hangs out a couple of turns, but he doesn't have the mana to bounce it back. I eventually cataclysm and now only have to deal with one propaganda. I have a shadow guy and he has an ophy out. I can attack every turn with an Undiscovered on the board now....That seals his fate. game 2: again...winter orb. Shadow creature gets third turn armor while hes tapped out.... = ) !!!!!!!!! Notes: The deck performed extremely well against decks I didn't expect. Winter orb was definately better than geddon vs blue. Cataclysm rocks! Although this deck is obviously anti red and black, it also performs well against blue and white. I would imagine it would do fine against green also with the propa orb and cataclysms. props:well run tourney.....nice opponents.....nobody smelled....... slops: me. I won the 1.5 tourny the month before but was too lazy to report it. Another U/W deck though..... I see a trend here.... Well, off to the PTQ tomorrow. If i'm lucky, I'll send another report. Like I said, I'd rather be lucky than good... Chris Ott....official member of unofficial Team Losers
