Subject: PTQ Dallas-JSS qualifier Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 21:23:42 PDT From: "Andrew Johnson" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hi Frank, this is the first tournament report I have sent, but I was in the mood, so I decided to. I was at the local store on Thursday night playing a small round robin with Leland Simmons, Bryan Hubble, and my teammate Matt Wachtman and some random people. Hubble offered to take me to Dallas with him on Friday(I live in Houston) if I could spend the night at his house on Thursday so he woudnt have to drive a million miles. Well, we got up Friday afternoon and headed to Austin to pick up Chris Herdeman and then went up to dallas. We got there, checked in at the hotel and went down to catch a movie at this mall place a couple blocks from the hotel. It was really weird there because you had to be 21 to go into the arcade. We tried to go up the elevator to like this perfectly innocent clothing shop and they asked us if we were 18. Bryan told them yes, and they let us go, but it seemed odd that we would need to be a certain age to go shopping or play at an arcade. Finally, it got about time to go to the movie, and we see There's Something About Mary. That movie was sooooooo funny, and i was laughing about it the whole weekend. We headed back to the hotel, and then Cris beat me in draft, we watched some tv, and went to bed. We get up to go register for the PTQ, and I find out that there's a JSS qualifier being held. Now, don't much care about the JSS but a free $200 sounds good for an entry fee of $12. Not only that, but the ass-horrible tournament director Ed Fox is charging 30 freaking dollars for the PTQ entry fee. Herdeman and Hubble both play in the PTQ, but neither makes top 8 and James Murph wins it with a mono-green rochestered deck in the top 8. In the emantime, I decide to play Mike Long's version of pros-bloom in the JSS thing, less bloom in the lap. So, here goes: Round 1 vs. Blue Steel He plays first and drops an island and I go and drop like a forest. he starts droppin quicksands and shit on the next few turns, so i meditate during his discard. He finally drops a second blue, but I abeyance him on my next turn, he counters and has no blue so I win. Next game, he gets a decent draw and so do I, but then he drops a glasses of urza and guess who wins? Anyone who plays with glasses is going to lose. Bryan Hubble compared playing with glasses to starting automatically paris mulliganing. The guy defended the glasses even after I won. his defense of that card completely fell apart when I asked him how they helped him, and he said, "Well, when I looked at your hand, i knew I had lost." Games- 2-0 Matches-1-0 Round 2 vs. r/b something This is a junior event so een the colors that have classically fast kills are slow as hell. Well, I can wait like froever to kill him, so i do. I win both games easily Games- 4-0 Matches-2-0 Round 3 finals(junior event, what can I say?) vs. WW w/ black for...Dauthi Maurader?!?!? I had played this guy before the tournament, and he wasn't that bad. He had dropped an Aura on me beforethe tourney, and though I had managed to beat him over the Aura, I was semi-worried. First game, he drops a few early craetures and I take some beatings. Then I go off and win. Next game, we sideboard, but he draws a quick beating and I draw the whole combo except I had two extra blooms in my hand instead of card-drawing cards. Next game, I drop a gloom, and he casts sleight of mind. I was worried until he announced that he was choosing blue. So next turn, I cast squandered resource, he tries to mana leak and I remind him of the gloom. The I do the balanec cad-nbloom thing, contract. Then I drop another gloom so I won't get abeyanced. I prosperity and draw some meditates. I then charm the anti-blue gloom, cast meditae, he leaks, i lapse, and win. games- 6-1 matches-3-0 $200 for 3 wins, I love junior events, cuz that makes 4 straight qualifications for Junior PT's and JSS for a total of $850. Money...it's like they're giving the stuff away! In case anyone's interested, I played in a side event and went 4-0 with the bloomdrain deck. Saturday t2 record-Games-14-2, matches-7-0 Well, I really don't think Long needed to cheat to win, the deck is REALLY good. Anyhow, I ended the weekend with a buncha packs, a check, an abyss out of the Italian legends pack I won, and a buncha cards I got good trades on. props&slops- props- Bryan Hubble-For the ride, and payin for most of the hotel room. Chris Herdeman-For being my draft partner, and beating those ass-horrible drafters with me. Random people-Giving me all there good cards in trade, and losing to me in draft. WOTC-tks for the free money. The nymphs in my bathroom-They know why...
