Subject: Tourney Report- Type 2 Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 19:05:45 -0700 From: "Arthur" To: Hi Frank. I just got back from a non sanctioned tourney at Ballpark Sports Cards in San Francisco, CA. I was using a version of 'Oath of Rogues.' There were 14 people in the tournament, swiss format, 5 round s with no playoffs or finals. In each match all players had to play all 3 games, regardless of the outcome of the first 2. I have not been playing competitive Magic for a while (only about 2 months) and made my deck last night. Here is the deck I used: 4 Counterspell 4 Mana Leak (soooo much better than dissipate, IMO) 2 Forbid 4 Propaganda 4 Impulse 3 Brainstorm 2 Creeping Mold 1 Archangel 1 Spirit of the Night 4 Oath of Druids 4 Spike Feeder 2 Gaea's Blessing 3 Sylvan Library 9 Forests 11 Islands 2 Undiscovered Paradise 1st Round: Steve playing Tradewind Bounce Game 1: He lays Wall of Roots early, I lay Oath, Oath for an Archangel, game. Game 2: We sit there for a while getting land, and he gets 2 tradewinds on the table with about 4 other creatures. He geddons and I lose to tradewind bounce. Game 3: Same as Game 1, except i get an Archangel and Spirit of the Night. He could have gotten free tradewinds as I had more creaures than he did but luckily he didnt catch it in 1-0-0 2nd Round: Playing Scott with Green/Red beatdown Game 1: He gets me down to four with a combination of Centaurs, Pincher Beatles, and Elves. I plop out an oath and oath away for spike feeders, sac them all and pretty soon im back up to 20. Then I oath for an archangel and she goes all the way. Game 2: He doesnt get a quick start and i Oath for a Spirit which kills him. Game 3: See game 2. 2-0-0 I feel pretty confident now, because I never playtested this deck and it's winning already. Scott and I play with our Rath Cycle decks in between the next round and he beats me 3-0. 3rd Round: Conway with 4 Color Oath of Druids Game 1: We spend more than half the round in this first game, both of us with no creatures on the board and 1 Oath on the table. We both have Gaea's blessing. Finally he plays a Scragnoth, then I Oath for an Angel, then play a feeder and make the angel 7/7. I win. Game 2: Less time was spent in this match as he gets a 7/7 angel. =( Game 3: With 4 minutes left in the round we just play it out. Of course time runs out. 2-0-1 Oh well I got one draw which isnt that bad...as long as I can win the next two. 4th Round: Kenneth Chui with ProsBloom NOOOOO I have a feeling I am about to lose because his Bloom Deck is quite good. Game 1: He goes off turn 4 or 5 (too quick is all I remember) Game 2: I side in 8 cards, and I still have useless cards in my deck (creature control). Well we sit there for a while with him trying to get stuff out and me countering everything. I beat him down with a lone Spike Feeder. Game 3: Another long game, but he finally gets a squandered on the table. Then he plays his only city of solitude. If I had known it was his only one, i would have creeping molded that, and not the squandered. I have 3 useless counters in my hand, and the only way I can win is if I can beat him down with spike feeders. I get him down to 2, but then he finds the combo and kills me. 2-1-1 Well, there's always another tourney. If i win next the only thing I can hope for is 3-4th place. 5th Round: Colin playing Hermit Druid/ Living Death (lots of 187's) Game 1: He lays out all his castable creatures (spike feeders) and I am able to Oath. I get a Spirit and Angel on the Table and that's game. Game 2: I get a very good draw. He is hesitant on playing creatures now, and I have a furnace on the table which is eating up his graveyard. He gets a verdant force in there, and plays living death. I use my 3 counters, and to each one he answers with pyros. Hmm...I could have won if i removed his Verdant force from the graveyard instead of tapping out to counter. IM SUCH A SCRUB!!! Well I receive verdant force beatdown. Game 3: Not much time left as I get a horrid draw (4 green spells and 3 Islands). I manage to draw some green land, then he plays 2 Scragnoths and Cloudchasers to kill off my Oaths. I am able to stall with constant mists and time runs out. 2-1-2 Well I go 2-1-2. I usually dont draw that much. I should have sided in my verdant touches more often. This deck is pretty good, but with the way i played it the creator would have been put to shame. Well Im still learning. Maybe I should go back to Sligh so I dont have to think as much. Plus i'll actually get some free time to trade and whatnot between rounds. Well everyone else seems to have Props/Slops so I might as well have some: Props: Alex for lending me much needed cards for the deck. Scott for kicking my butt with his Rath Cycle deck...Thanx for showing me how much mine sucks! Kenneth for trading me a reflecting pool!! Those things are so hard to get. Slops: Well the only thing I can bad mouth is my sloppy playing. I could have won more if I had noticed small things (like using the furnace to remove the verdant force instead of tapping out to counter!!!). Well, like I said Im still learning. Thanks alot Frank.
