Subject: Oath of Rogues tourney report Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 17:07:31 -0500 (CDT) From: oash@webtv.net (michele oasheim) To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Yo, I'm Dillon Oasheim. This is my first Tournament report so bear with me. While reading the reports on the Nationals I came across a real kick-ass deck that is now unfortunately on the July Decks To Beat. I threw it together and decided to test it at a local tournament. Here's the decklist: Blue counterspell 4 dissipate 3 forbid 2 impulse 4 brainstorm 3 propaganda 4 Green spike feeder 4 sylan library 3 oath of druids 4 gaea's blessing 3 verdant touch 1 {usless in main deck, probably stick in sideboard} creeoing mold 2 Kill Archangel Land Island 11 forest 9 undiscovered paradise 2 Sideboard emerald charm 1 creeping mold 1 verdant touch 1 {quite usefull, definitely good in sideboard} constant mists 2 disrupt 3 hydroblast 4 phyrexian furnace 3 (I always find a room for 'em) The format was single-elimination Type 2, It took place at the Game Guild in Lake Geneva Wisconsin, and occurred on July 11. There were 33 competitors (not bad for a local),mostly regulars. I just barely made the 1:15p.m. start time so matches started right away. Round One----Cuneo Blue----James Lambert James always leans towards Blue control, but will play black or red-black beatdown, I'm not terrible worried. Game 1 I win the roll and go first. A second turn sylvan library is a great help as I can safely spend most of my life for cards. Very boring match. I was able to force a Oath into play, and "Touch" one of my opponents land. Countering and molding James's disks ended the match right there as a Archangel was the first creature I milled. Game 2 A first turn furnace by James spells trouble, but the match goes the same, force a Touch, get Angel, crush opponent. Round 2----Sligh----Bob Day I've known Bob for a few years now and he has always been playing Sligh or a silly rabid wombat deck. He has never beaten me, so I'm a little cocky. Game 1 I'm a little worried but an early Propaganda and Oath win the game for me easily. Even a pair of scrolls don't held as I'm gaining 8 life a turn with a pair of Oaths. I mold both of those bastards, and beat him down hard with a Angel Game 2 This one's alot closer, Bob usually has tricky sideboards, and this time he did. A quick weenie rush backed up by tranquilities when I tap out make it difficult to stay alive. Several spike feeders kept me around long enough to get the combo going and win. Round 3----crappy white-black shadow deck----? Game 1 I've played this kid before, he's a okay player but can't build strong decks. He plays a first turn soltari footsoldies, second turn soltari trooper, third turn armor. Nice draw by him, but eary Props and a impulsed Oath make it all academic. He has no main deck enchantment removal and I walk all over him. Game 2 I disrupt a second turn hatred for 19, game. Round 4----Red-Green speed with wildebeasts and blossoms----Aaron something Game 1 and Game 2 Decks like these don't stand much of a chance against the Oath decks. Unless I get hosed and they get a god draw I win almost automatically. Round 5----Finals----suicide black----Jim Lawrence Game 1 First turn carnophage, then a pair of sacromancy's on the second-Oh crap!!!!!! I'm "pulsing and stormin" for either a Prop or a Oath when I get hatreded, damn. Game 2 Jim plays a first turn ritual, sacromancy, double unholystrenth! I only take 6 before a prop comes out. Jim stalls at one land the whole game and I show him now mercy Game 3 What the hell!?! First turn ritual, 3 carnophages! How could anyone be so lucky. Jim has always had a feel for the darkside, and it just must like him alot. My draw is much better, and a third turn prop saves my ass. Next turn Oath. and even the Scroll can't save him. Mwa ha ha ha!!!! Conclusion OATH IS AMAZING!!!!! It cripples heavy creature decks like the old J. Sneider Pox decks. I love this deck, but being on the July decks to beat will make it harder to win with. Creatureless decks are a big problem, but the Touch helps. If anyone has suggestions, e-mail me at oash@webtv.com
