Subject: Tourney Report from July 12, 1998 in an Ancestral Recall Swiss Event. Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 23:46:39 -0600 From: "Otwell, Chris" To: The following deck did really well at a tournament Sunday afternoon, doing 5-2 before I was eliminated. Round 1 == I play against a Red/Black creature-hatred-burn deck. Very Fast, only 4 of his 28 cost more than 2. Lifegaining, wrathing and Firestorming wins me the games easily. This Deck finished 3-3. 1-0 Round 2 == Black/Blue Virtual TimeWalk technology with Land Distruction as backup. Good plays on my part along with some timely mana and tutors for Auras got me through 2 games, each lasting 25 minutes. Most memorialable part of this was when I decided to let his Volrath's Dungeon sit on the table for 10 turns in a row (his side), with a Light of Day in play (my side) and a Spirit of the Night in play (also my side), and 2 aura of Silence in play. Let the board position sit like this for over 10 turns before doing 2 key kills w/auras, allowing me the time/ability to draw the Cards/Mana I needed to follow up on this to win the game. Actually a good deck, but do to a Judge issuing him a Match Loss for missing a card, he finishes at 3-3. 2-0 Round 3 == White Weenie .. 2 Fast Games, each time destroying her game with a Wrath of God and a Firestorm, then pulling out a Spirit of the Night. 3-0 Round 4 == White Weenie .. Pretty similar to the previous game. 4-0 Round 5 == Blue/Black Card Deck. Pretty strange deck, run by Mr. Darik Dvorshak, yet effective none the less. 1st game, I get locked down by Capsize and Tradewinds at this time, ending the game with 0 permentants in play. Game 2, lasted nearly all of both decks as per normal means. Most of my Druids per Dissipated. Have the only recursion in the deck, I was not going to be decks. Eventually, after Geddoning the Board on turn 14 or 15 of the game, I was able to get enough mana into play to actually CAST the SPIRIT OF THE NIGHT. Yes, a Green/White Deck actually casting the Spirit. By this time, Darik had cast every one of his 12 permission spells in the deck and his 4 Diabolic Edicts, and had a tapped Erati in play, giving me the capability to do this. You should of seen the look on his face when I cast the Spirit, it was truely memorable (particularly, since he has not seen this creature up till this point in the match). I win this one, third game resembles the first. I lose the match. 4-1 Single Elimation starts with me at 5th overall. Round 6 == MonoBlack POX/Bridge/CursedScroll/Bottomless Pit/Scalding Tongues deck -- Totally Creatureless. Both games last over 25 minutes, before I kill him with no permenents in play on his side (Geddons/Aura over any over). Must have geddon 8 or 9 times each game. 5-1 Round 7 == White Weenie, same person that I beat in Round 3. Feel confident. Opening hand: 1 ArchAngel, 2 Geddons, 2 Cataclysms, 1 QuickSand, 1 ReflectingPool. Did not see another land that game. Due to lack of Paris, which I would of used with that draw, I could not even participate in this game. Game 2, same as previous match, earning me a good victory. 3rd Game, I get a good Draw. She gets ALL 4 EMPERICAL ARMORS on the Opening Draw. Turns 3 She puts out a Palidon EnVec, I use my Druid to Peaches into play each turn getting 4 life back. She using Armor # 1, and attacks. I block, and proceed to Wrath during my turn. She gets another creature out and armors that as well (Armor #2), I take a ton, and on my turn wrath again. Next turn she gets a Solatari Monk into play, which I can't block, armors it (Armor #3) and attacks. I get out a Spirit of the Night, and attack. She double Armors (Armor # 4) that stupid Monk and beats me, by 1 turn. She was at 5 life, and beat me to the punch by winning the Deck Lottery. That Sucked. This knocked me out. She proceed to kick the shit out of the Statis Deck in a 10 turn match for the Ancestral Recall. Damnit, I would of also destroyed the Statis Deck as well. It was mine were it not for the Deck Lottery. Deck Listing.... The Oath of The Piley One 4 Oath of Druids 3 Enlighted Tutors 1 Scroll Rack 1 Spirit of the Night 1 ArchAngel 3 Aura of Silence 1 Verdant Touch 2 FireStorms 1 Sylvan Library 3 Wrath of Gods 4 Cataclysms 4 Gaea's Blessings 3 Armageddons 1 Piece of Mind 4 Spike Feeders 2 Reflecting Pools 1 Plains 1 Forest 4 Quicksands 4 City of Brass 4 Undiscovered Paradises 4 Gemstone Mines 4 Brushlands Sideboard was only partly useful and will be replaced before any more events: 2 Honarable Passages 2 Cop:Red for Red 1 Cop:Green 2 Disrupting Septers (actually, forgot my pyroblasts, so I had to do with this instead) 2 Disenchants 2 Creeping Molds 2 Light of Days 1 wrath of God 1 Armadegeddon Changes that I am considering... Taking out the Piece of Mind, and the Sylvan Library (Never Used it when I had a Scroll Rack in play) to insert 1 more reflecting pool (I felt mana screwed a lot), and 1 more Enlighted Tutor. Though I also want/need 1 more Firestorm for Sure!! Cataclysms wasn't as effective as either the Armageddon or the Wrath of Gods were. May go to 4 of these as well reducing the # of CATs. 6 Creatures may be 1 too many. Considering dropping the ArchAngel all together and go with 4 Spikes and 1 Spirit as my creature base. Dead Cards/Wasted Card Slots: Definately the Piece of Mind. Put it in, to deck cards out of the hand if I ever drew a Spirit of the Night or something. If you have any questions or further comments on this deck, I'm interested in hearing any attempts to modify the deck.
