Subject: T2 Sligh Tourney Report Date: Mon, 15 Jun 1998 14:56:01 EDT From: Eric3232@aol.com To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I attended a local tourney at The Lucky Frog on Sunday. There were 26 people with 4 rounds of swiss and a top 8. I decided to go with my Sligh deck, which I had not played for a while. Here is the deck: 4 Mogg Fanatic 4 Jackal Pups 3 Goblin Vandals 2 Goblin Digging Team 4 Ironclaw Orcs 4 Ball Ligtnings 2 Suq Ata Lancers 4 Shocks 4 Incinerates 4 Fireblasts 4 Cursed Scrolls 18 Mountains 3 Wastelands It was a pretty basic Sligh. I decided to take out the Flunkies because I expected to see a lot of sligh, where they are pretty useless. I also took out one of the Wastelands due to the lack of non basic lands played at The Lucky Frog. In a professional tournament, I would play with the extra Wasteland. On to the report... Round 1 Chris C. Different style 5cB Game 1: Quick creatures knock him into Incinerate&Fireblast range for the win. Game 2:Quick Ball Lightning and Scrolls do him in again Game 3: Same as game 2 Match 1-0 Games 3-0 Round 2 ?????? ?????? Bluue/Green Slowness This guy was an obvious beginner by attacking several times with creatures who had summoning sickness, and casting Sandstorms and Tidal Waves during his turn. Throughout the match, I tried to help him out by letting him redo things and telling him the best plays. Games 1,2,3: The quick creatures are way too much for him as his deck was way too slow. No way to stop the Sligh attack. Match 2-0 Games 6-0 Round 3 Michael M. Black Speed Game 1: He parised down to 5 and could not recover Game 2: Cursed Scroll removes all of his creatures and the pups go all the way. Game 3: Too much burn for black to handle. Match 3-0 Games 9-0 Round 4 Ken Russel Counter Phoenix We intentional draw. We played it out and he got mana screwed in two of the three games we played. He just squeaked out a win in game 2. Match 3-0-1 Games 9-0-3 I am the number 2 seed heading into the single elimination quarterfinals. Round 5 J.P. Druid/Birds/Gaea's/Maro/Geddon/Wrath/Goyff deck (don't know the name of it) (Quarterfinals) Game 1: Scroll, a couple Balls, and 2 Fireblasts are too fast. Game 2: See game 1 Match 4-0-1 Games 11-0-3 Round 6 Gee Sligh (Semifinals) Game 1: I go first and come out too fast, drawing way too much burn. Game 2: He goes first and casts creature after creature. I only draw one land as he rolls to the victory. Game 3: He is at 9. I have a scroll in play, 3 cards in my hand, 3 mountains(untapped in play), it is the end of his turn, and I am dead next turn. I scroll him and he guesses wrong. I untap and Incinerate&Fireblast him for the win. REALLY close game! Match 5-0-1 Games 13-1-3 Round 7 Abe Gypsy Pox (Finals) He is nice and accepts the intentional draw as it is getting late, I am tired, and I still had not studied for my finals the next day. Match 5-0-2 Games 13-1-6 Sligh is still one of the greatest decks ever, and Exodus is going to make it go even faster. So many people think that Sligh is finished as every player is prepared for it, but no matter how prepared a player is for Sligh, they can still lose to it consistently. That is what makes it so great, it can always win. Now for the props and slops: Props: - The Lucky Frog for providing a fun place to play T2 tourneys for only one dollar - Abe for accepting the ID when I wanted to go home - Mark for testing out a new deck and going 4-0 in the swiss rounds - Cursed Scroll for still being broken - The guy I played in the second round for coming to, what looked like, his first tournament(sorry I forgot your name) Slops: - Chris C. (Here is the scenario: Ken Russel is playing CounterPhoenix vs. Chris's 5cB. Ken only had a quicksand untap and sat at 7 life. Chris had plenty of mana, a Necratog, Sex Monkey, and Shadow Guildmage in play. Chris attacks with all 3. Ken targets the monkey with the quicksand. In response, Chris Firestorms for 5, targetting all 3 creatures, himself, and Ken. This put Ken at 2, but killed all of his creatures before they dealt damage. He could have let the monkey die, sac it to the tog, and firestorm for 3. Instead, Ken untaps at 2 life, and 6 cards to Chris's 0, and never looked back. Extremely scrubby move on Chris's part in the quarterfinals) - Jared for being so obsessed with Donais style 5cU - Michael for continually begging me for the win (he begged so much that somebody else gave him a win in a different round) That should do it.
