Subject: [Report] Type 1: Necro Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 00:17:49 +0200 From: "Carl Devos" To: "Frank Kusumoto" Hello, Last Saturday I've been to a local type I in Brussels. Small turnout (14 players) struggling for a few boosters. I had chosen to dust off my old necro, with a few adaptations for the newer environment. Here is the deck list: 2 Gorilla Shaman 4 Hypnotic Specter 4 Knight of Stromgald 2 Nekrataal 2 Contagion 4 Dark Ritual 2 Demonic Consultation 1 Demonic Tutor 4 Hymn to Tourach 4 Necropotence 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Black Lotus 1 Ivory Tower 1 Mirror Universe 1 Sol Ring 2 Zuran Orb 4 Badlands 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Strip Mine 2 Sulfurous Springs 7 Swamp 1 Underground River 4 Underground Sea 1 Volrath's Stronghold 3 Wasteland 60 cards Sideboard 1 Blood Moon 3 Pyroblast 2 Shattering Pulse 1 Contagion 2 Dystopia 2 Hydroblast 1 Rebound 3 Nevinyrral's Disk Round 1 Hicham B/r Necro Necro on necro is a though matchup, even if Hicham doesn't have the spoilers. In the first game, we neutralize each other's threats. Then he gets a necro out and I can't cope with the dark side... I sideboard in a 3rd Contagion. Second game is mine, when I pull the Mirror/Necro combo. In the last game, Hicham is ahead but can't get rid of my Mirror Universe, and as he's got a Necro in play, it's a draw. 1-1-1, 1 point. Round 2 Vilain - UW without power cards Both games, I wait until he's tapped out to cast a necro and then Specters and Hymns buy me a cheap victory. 3-1-1, 4 points. Round 3 Charlot - UW, Ophidian, Abyss, power 10 Charlot does like Type 1, like me, and he likes using as much as power cards as he can. Today is no exception. I game 1, he casts an early Abyss :( I try to summon several creatures the same turn, but he always has an answer. I then wait for my Mirror, draw some counters thanks to Hymn, and Mirror him. Game 2 is fast: 1st turn Hyppie, 2nd Turn Wasteland and 2nd Hyppie. He manages to Pyroclasm them away, but I mana screw him with another Wasteland. He doesn't recover. 5-1-1, 7 points. Round 4 Guy - Lions, Bolts, Dib and Erham I don't remember having met Guy yet. He says he's read some of my reports :) His deck is similar to what the East Coast players had in the Dallas Type 1 tourney. Everything I've seen is for offense (except for a ZOrb). We had 3 good games. In the first one, he starts with Dib, which is promptly contagioned, then he summons 2 Lions, but I Taal one, then get an Knight which goes all the way (this is after he has bolted a couple of Hyppies). I lose game 2 to a first turn Vise (can you say cheese?) which deals 10 damage. Guy just has to finish me with a few bolts. 7-2-1, 10 points. Round 5 Pierre Giraudroux - mono blue Pierre is playing an orginal deck: monoblue with Ophidian, Dibs, Merfolk Looter, Phryexian War Beast, 13 counters or so. In game 1, He counters every threat I cast and beat me with creatures. In game 2, we both have mana problems but I get out of it first. All I remember from game 3 is that I won it and that he took a lot of Dib damage. 9-3-1, 13 points. I finish first with 13 points and 47 resistance points, winning boosters and Arena cards. Hicham from round 1 is second (13 points but 42 resistance points). Charlot from round 3 is third (12 points I think). So, necro ended up taking the top places :) Altough I didn't mention it in the report, Volrath Stronghold won me 2 games alone (get that Hyppie or Shaman back, hmmmm). I hope to get some critics from my deck and/or sideboard... Thanks for reading. Carl
