Subject: Brazilian National Championship-going to the Worlds Date: Tue, 07 Jul 1998 15:44:15 -0300 From: Marcel Campos & Carlos Campos To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I used to think I was not going to enter a tournament again.I quit magic after GPrio after I lost to Adam Katz on the final round and lost a place at PTLA(at least he did well there!).This loss was not the first one I had with a spot on a PT on the line, since I had made pretty well on all events( (top 16, at least) that sent players to Pro Tours.I thought I was not cut out for Magic and quit.Then the brazilian nationals came and I, alongside with other 32 players, was given a monstrous bye of 7 games! Many friends insisted that I played and I said what the hell letīs go, i donīt care anymore.A friend gave a deck on friday, to play on sunday, that he said was the metadeck.I made a few changes for me and we called it Brazilian Jungle Deck: 4 Undiscovered Paradise 4 Mountains 4 Forest 3 City of Brass 3 Gemstone Mine 2 Karplusan Forest 2 Man oīWar 2 Uktabi Orangutan 2 Mogg Flunkies 3 Skyshroud Elite ( we call them elven ninjas) 3 Barrow Ghouls 4 Mogg Fanatics 4 Granger Guildmage 4 River Boa 4 Winter Orbs 3 Incinerates 3 Firestorms 2 Mana Leak 2 Disenchant 2 Giant Growth SIDEBOARD 3 Honorable Passage 1 Mana Leak 2 Pyroblast 3 Dread of Night 2 Wasteland 2 Terror 2 Tranquil Domain The championship was held in my city, São Paulo Sunday Round 1: This guy from Rio( whose nickname I discovered later was The Living Cochroache) was playing a deck very similar to mine, but he had birds and quirions.Game 1: I was not aware of that and use my resources to kill his birds and rangers and lock him with the orb but he beat me.I sided the orbs out and in came one more counter and creature removals.I beat him easily then as i ignored the then useless birds and quirions and had better cards. Third game was thougher and I turned it around when he attacked me with a barrow ghoul and I had a mage and a flunkie out. I blocked with the two, and he tried to incinerate my mogg but i giant sized it and gave it first strike with the mage. The two then finished him. Sunday Round 2(1-0): Another guy from Rio and a friend of my former oponent using Sligh.I lost game one after I left him with one life.Sided in passages and mana leak and won the other two games easily. Round 3: (Iīm tired of tiping Sunday)(2-0) My good friend Carlos Campos and top 8 with me last year on the nationals, as well as the guy that is lending me his internet service, with a prosperbloom.Game 1 boa boa leak game.Game 2 mogg flunkie flunkie boa game.Sorry my friend. Round 4(3-0): this nice guy Edson from Mogi(a town mear mine)with the deck I thought could beat me: Godzilla. Game 1 boa boa he played buried alive and I followed orb.On his final turn he playerd living deathg i mana leaked it game.Game 2 he was manascrewed and I wastelanded him and let the ninjas out. Roundsd 5 & 6 i tied and qualified. The final 8 were the following: 1- Marco Pirajinha (jiu jitsu fighter and prosperbloom maniac) 2- Romario (Nice guy with a big Head from Rio, playing 5CSligh) 3- This guy from Curitiba with a counter sliver(And my teammate now.Sorry. I donīt know your name yet.) 4- Thomas Felsberg callsign "Lord", with this crazy necrobloom deck. 5-hello! this is me , Marcello Leone 6-Andre the "Baby" with Turbo Roberta Close, a variation of living death with Tradewind) 7- Carlos Campos (pilot wannabe and prosperbloom extraordinarie as well) 8-Sergio Longo ( the friend that lent me the deck and played it as well) Quarterfinals : My friend Thomas(who played in the worlds last year) was my opponent( I was confident) Game 1: I was going to kill him but forgot to pay ghoul (donīt play for 6 months and it will happen), thats the rules after all He turned around and was eating time so I conceded.Game Two I used mulligan but came with only one land in my hand.After i didīnt play a land on turn two he laughed, and that was quite unpolite of him and he played volrathīs dungeon with aritual and discarded his hand to make me return mine.Bad move since that left him manascrewed as well. I recovered, he lost.Game 3 I had a mogg and a mage early out and two mana leakson my hand.He played his third swamp and a necro.I followed with an orb when it happenned: He drew a card with necro on the table!I yelled, the judge saw it and the head judge forfeited the match and i won.Sorry but these are the rules. I finished second place and the "proud" natinal team consists off: Romario (Champion) Myself, thank you very much the guy whose name I donīt know(Sorry again pal) Sergio Longo do Brasil I leave youy now with a warning: Brazil will win the World Cup again!
