Subject: [TOURNAMENT] Italian national report TOP 8 Date: Mon, 08 Jun 1998 17:07:27 +0200 From: Federico Dato To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hi, here is the report from italian nationals. 250 people were attending this event! 2 days: the first 7 swiss rounds t2 and the second top 64 from the first day 5 swiss rounds t2, then top 8 single elimination best of five t2. Top 8 will go to Europeans in Bruxelles and top 4 will go to World Championship in Seattle. We arrived in Florence at 22.00 on Friday. I came with 4 friends of mine: Mauro Rossetti, playing a variant of Kastle, Stefano Fiore, same as Mauro, Raffaele Lo Moro, playing also a Kastle but with some differences, Andrea Vitali, playing a Godzilla deck, and me, playing a variant of 5cR. Here is the deck: Critters: 4 Mogg Fanatic 3 Jackal Pup 3 River Boa 2 Mogg Flunkies 2 Barrow Ghoul 1 Dauthi Horror 2 Uktabi Orangutan 2 Man-o'-War 4 Granger Guildmage Spells: 3 Mana Leak 3 Incinerate 3 Firestorm 2 Giant Growth 2 Disenchant Permanents: 3 Winter Orb 1 Goblin Bombardment Lands: 5 Mountains 3 Forest 3 Gemstone Mine 4 Undiscovered Paradise 3 City of Brass 2 Karplusan Forest Sideboard: 1 Winter Orb 2 Wasteland 1 Mana Leak 2 Tranquil Domain 2 Honorable Passage 3 Pyroblast 2 Terror 2 Dread of Night Round 1 Awarded Bye Round 2 Matteo Granara (5c Sliver) Game 1: He starts with Mox Crystalline , Muscle, Armored and Muscle, AAARRRGGHHH....! Game 2: I play 2-3 creatures, he plays 4 slivers (no Crystalline) Firestorm for 4 and win. Game 3: I drop quickly some fast creatures he plays Propaganda but I still can attack him so he drop a Disk and destroys 3 creature of mine and his propaganda, mox, bird. Restart with crystalline and Armored, and I play a Boa, I have 1 green mana, he attacks with both sliver I block Cryst and regenerate, and he plays quake for 1, killing boa and cryst so I can kill the armored and kill him with a monkey. 2-0-0 games:2-1 Round 3 Andrea Vitali (Godzilla) We playtested a lot and I always lose with that deck if he draws mana. I lost easy both games. 2-1-0 games:2-3 Round 4 Norberto Giusti(Tradepropageddon) This was the deck that Twin Towers Team (from Bologna) played. Game 1: I play a early Winter Orb that slowed a lot my opponent; I play 3 critters he plays a wall I destroyed with a Giant Growth he played a trade killed again with a second Giant growth. I win. Game 2: This game was longer than the first one. He drops a Derelor that I blocked with a Boa, then I played other creatures dealing some damages, so I dropped a Orb and he played a fatMaro, but I drew a Firestorm that let me win. 3-1-0 games:4-3 Round 5 Alessandro Melis (BigBlue) Game 1: Pup, Flunkies, Orb game! Game 2: Orb, counter, then he plays ophidian, wall and Trade, lost. Game 3: See game 1 with 2 pyroblast. 4-1-0 games:6-4 Round 6 Stefano Poletti (SRB) Game 1: This game was balanced but at the end he wins. Game 2: I lost in seven turns but with 2 honorable passages and 2 mana leak in my hand and no pentalands in play. ( he killed me having only 5 life points) 4-2-0 games:6-6 Round 7 Paolo Colonnello (5cB) Game 1: A very long game with both killing opponent's creatures until he killed more than me. Game 2: Close game until I draw a Firestorm.(I finished with 2 life points) Game 3: Same as game 2. 5-2-0 games:8-7 The first day I finished 29th so I can play in the second. Round 8 Dario Parazzoli (suicide black) Game 1: He starts playing in the first 3 turns a sarcomancy, dauthi horror (with strenght) and a hidden horror, me only 2 little creature but firestorm killed everything. Game. Game 2: He starts so quickly and I draw no Firestorm. Lost. Game 3: I Firestorm 3 creatures (2 were sarcomancy) but then he dropped a Barrow Ghoul with bad moon, judge was looking the match, and he draw forgetting to pay the upkeep cost, ops! Game. 6-2-0 games:10-8 Round 9 Stefano Fiore (Kastle) I.D. 6-2-1 games:10-8 Round 10 Alessandro Gariup (5cW with en-kor maniac and firestorm) Game 1: I play a first turn mage, and after 3 turns he didn't played anything, and earthquaked for 1, mana leak, so he played firestorm for 1 to the mage, ok, my turn I dropped a new mage. Game. Game 2: I played again a mage in the first turn, he firestorm it for 1 and played 2 priest, so I played a dread of night killing both, Game. 7-2-1 games:12-8 Round 11 Marco Makuz (Kastle) Game 1: Pup, Flunkies, he wall and trade, Firestorm. Game. Game 2: I draw 10 lands in the first 17 cards, he plays a peach and intuition for other 3 peaches. Living death, Living death, lost. Game 3: Pup Flunkies, he wall wall, me orb wasteland, giant growth kill a orb and terror killed the other. Game. 8-2-1 games:14-9 Round 12 Maurizio Ferraro (counter sliver) Game 1: Fanatic flunkies, he muscle crystalline, me Boa Giant growth, game. Game 2: Mox crystalline muscle, sliver, sliver,... lost. Game 3: Fanatic boa, he crystalline bird, me man-o'-war boa, game. 9-2-1 games:16-10 so I'm in the top 8!!!!!!!!!!!!! Game 2: Pup, merfolk, Flunkies, Chill, Boa, legacy, tranquil domain, counter, he sac legacy to the boa, Giant Growth, Counter, lost. Game 3: Pup, Flunkies, boa, pyroblast, game. Game 4: Fanatic, boa, merfolk x2, firestorm, game. Game 5: No lands mulligan( the first in the tourney!) 6 cards only 1 mountain, I take it. Fanatic, and I draw my second land after 4 turns and it is a mountain, Firestorm for 2, counter and at turn 7 I draw a CoB but it is too late because he dropped a chill and a trade, disenchant, counter, incinerate on trade, hydroblast, terror, counter, tranquil domain, counter, firestorm for 4 ( he has 1 card in his hand), hydroblast AAAARRRRGGGHHH... Lost! 9-3-1 games:18-13 Paselli-Starnini 3-1 Natale-Galli 4-3 (they draw a game with quake) Rebagliati-Negrini 3-0 Me-Morbidelli 2-3 Semifinals Paselli-Morbidelli 3-0 Natale-Rebagliati 3-1 Finals Paselli-Natale 1-3 Italian Champion is Tommaso Natale!
