Subject: TOURNEMENT PTQ Rome, IN, September 19, 1998 Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 14:29:15 PDT From: "Bedford Crenshaw" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I had been preparing for this tournement for weeks. I knew I wanted something that fit my style: either WW, Sligh, or Slash n' Burn. I went Sligh. After comparing all the World's and tourney winning Sligh decks my deck looked like this: 4 Wildcats, Fireslingers, Pups, Fanatics, Raiders, Kindles, Shocks 3 Flunkies, Giant Strengths 2 Sonic Burst, Scalding Tongs, Wasteland, Maniac Rage 18 Mountain SIDEBOARD: 1 Wasteland and 2 each of Aftershock, Boil, Rathi Dragon, Super Shatter, Gnomes, Portcullis, and Torture Chamber The Rages, Bursts, Chambers, & Portcullis weren't there originally. My first practice was at the local sanctioned tournement at the B&ME on Preston in Louisville. Round 1 bye, Round 2 win, Round 3 lost to another Sligh (the guy won a coke from the local card cheat and $1.50 from my ex-girl just for beating me). It got tuned by going to Red Rock (where the best KY players play at) in Lexington on 9/13, where I got advice from them. A big boon came when I got Chris' decklist from the Dojo (it was secret until it got posted with the other top 8 decks from Columbus, OH). Came tournement eve, where I went to Empire Comics in New Albany, where I lucked out with Chris being there to give last minute advice. (I also benefitted going there because I finally figured out who it was that badmouthed me enough to cause my ex-girl to treat me like dirt). After going to a boring dinner party I decided what the heck and went up to 3rd Place in Salem, IN. Nothing but good people play there. It was there that I was told by one of the guys there that the reason poeple play w/ Maniacal Rage was because it acted like a Pacifism against walls (nothing more useless than a wall that can't block). Played 2 rounds of Extended with a Type I restricted list with my WW/r deck and drove on up to Muncie, planning last minute deck changes and cruel, brutal things to do to the guy who badmouthed me to my ex-girl. Finally got to Muncie about 3AM fast time, 2AM local (it's a Hoosier State thing, don't try to understand). Furtunately, I had just picked up my comforter my day from being washed, so it made a great improv pillow. Unfortunately, The Convention Center was only 100 yards away from the local train station, which serviced trains every freakin' 30-45 minutes. Guess how much sleep I got. You're right. After being awaken for the last time by the second car to get there, I decided to go into the Center and make my last minute changes. ONLY 2 MANIACAL RAGES??? Oh boy. Made my last minute changes, listened to the coordinator telling how nobody bothered to pre-reg for this tourney. I managed to be player #1 and sat at Table #1 for the first two rounds. After that... Round 1, Billy Tarris, Counter Pheonix 1-1 All he ever got out was 5-6 islands and one counter. His hand was redder tha raw beef. 1-2 He managed to get out a COP:RED by sneaking in a Thalokos Lowland that I wasted afterwards. It took me 11 creatures, a Boil (counter spell bait), Kindle, and a Fanatic to get around his 13 lands. His 1st three Pheonix's were nicely clumped together 3 rounds after I had already won. Whew. 2-0 1-0 I took advantage of the fact that the home for Garfield, everyone's favorite fat cat, was the Children's museum attached to the center. Bought a Garfield mousepad, and went back in for Round 2. Round 2, Brandon Rutter, Counter Pheonix I tried. Really, I did try. Suffice to say I hate Legacy's Allure. The stupid use of Aftershock I made had me wishing for more sleep. 2-2 1-1 Round 3, Ryan Georges, Suicide Black 3-1 Got him down to three life, but we overwhelmed me (Mental note: add Goblin Bombardments to deck). 3-2 Quick Kindling of Sarcomancy Zombies works quite wel ;-> 3-3 Nail biter. My Torture Chamber saved my butt. If he had gotten a second source of black mana, I'd been dead. I thought Sligh was suppose to work wonders against Suicide? 4-3 2-1 Round 4, Paul Givens, Big Blue I was hoping not to play any fellow Louisville Lads. Oh well. 4-1 He was rather light on counters. DD just did him in. 4-2 Let's just say that my lone Fanatic and 2 Fireslingers was not what made him BOILing angry ;->. He somehow forgot that counter decks are supposed to always leave two islands open. He was so disgusted he kept complaining to his pals about it. Looks like my ex has another member for her anti-Bedford club. 6-3 3-1 Round 5, Ped Bun, White Weenie 5-1 "Quit torturing my Giant Pup that's held at bay by your paladin, will ya?" 5-2 Took out my Pups. but I still get a proctology lesson from Ped. Maybe I should go WW next time? 6-5 3-2 Round 6, Robert Dudley (age 10-12, ouch) Suicide Black 6-1 Pretty normal course for Sligh/SB matchups :-) 6-2 I was creature screwed, The Portcullis I sideboarded in was no help. 6-3 He got out three Sarcomancies: I found enough burn. Made sure to complement his playing to his mother, who came by to pick him up. A sligh that does this poorly against SB needs work. 8-6 4-2 Round 7 Zaid ? (something like that) Oath of Ghouls Deck To see who chose who went first he had this card protector; one side showing MC Hammer, the other Vanilla Ice. Reminded him that Hammer was Mirage, not Tempest ;->. Could have been a Living Death deck, although I didn't see any. 7-1 Almost got some recursion in myself, until he bounce his Oath back to his hands. 7-2 I got him down 4. Honestly, I did. 8-8 4-3 Round 8 Ted Brown, ???Deck type He didn't show. I'll accept freebie points I didn't stick around for the Final 8 (I hope Chris won). Stopped by a VERY slow Arby's for some food home. Got in the fast lane on I-69 (shut up perverts) when someone decided to back up his car in the fast lane. Ended up mowing grass with my car to avoid him by inched, throwing my fries onto the floor. They were cold by the time I got to them, so I fed them to our neighborhood squirrels when I got home. NEXT WEEK: Columbus. Saturday:pre-release. Sunday:pre-release or PTQ. Haven't decided yet. ****************************************************************** /-----\ * Bedford "Mage Llanic" Crenshaw | | * | @ | * Have you hugged a penguin today? | | * | |______ * E-Mail: | |\_____> * eudyptes@hotmail.com |-------|-----/ * ccrensha@iusmail.ius.indiana.edu URL: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Portal/4900 ******************************************************************* ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
