Subject: Dallas PTQ:Rome Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 11:19:56 -0500 (CDT) From: Jacob S Chen To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hi, Before I start my report, I want to give gratitude, acknowledgement, kudos, and a round of hard nogs out to my diety of magic, LEONARD RICHARDSON. LEONARD RICHARDSON gives me all my decks that I play at regionals, at ptqs, a local t2 tournies, and so on. LEONARD RICHARDSON is the reason I play magic. He rules, and he gave me my deck to play this weekend, 8/12, at the PTQ in Dallas. You can see his report there with his decklist. I'm not supposed to give out his decklist, but I'm sneaky and let some things slip in my report. Anyways, this deck is RED. I go to the tournament and I'm still missing 16 cards, 4 of them goblins, none of them mountains. I get them and I'm ready to go, shouting my warcry: LEONARD RICHARDSON. Round 1: Monoblue He's playing a weird sort of monoblue. When I drop my goblins, he says "I bet my four rootwater hunters would mess you up." "Sure would," I agree and drop a fireslinger. He drops a rootwater next turn and I sling it. Roll over 4 maindeck propagandas for victory both games. Matches: 1-0, Games: 2-0 Round 2: Monoblue Is this bad? This is another weird monoblue. I burn him out first game after he taps out for a fifth turn silver wyvern. but not before I see a porticullis. What in the world? I don't know what it does. Even though I am playing sligh, I only own one porticullis and it's foreign, so I don't know what it does. It's a so-called "B-Ting" versus Living Death, so I figure maybe it was a bad metagame choice. LEONARD RICHARDSON! Second game, he does fifth turn wyvern again as he fries to a crispy blue once-mage. He shows me his 3 dominating licid, 3 allure, and 4 chills. Red is so good. Matches: 2-0, Games: 4-0 Round 3: TradeAwake Now, I don't know what the deal is, but I don't like this matchup either. This man calls himself "Fubarduck." Okay, whatever floats your boat. He says "I beat a sligh deck last round, too." So much for surprise factor. I beat him down first game because red is good. Second game, he goes second turn chill, third turn chill, fourth turn propaganda. I roll over for the victory. I'm that good. Matches: 3-0, Games: 6-0 We'll take a break here to say hi to my geno buds Fremlin, Cerrus, Icarus Manager, and Dizzy. HI. They're big dojo fans and Icarus is my red-haired wench. Round 4: Living Death Boy, more fun. I'm afraid to show my scorecard because everyone knows sligh is the only thing that goes 6-0 games. First game he goes hermitdruidforthirtycardsintomygrave and then go down to 3 life. Fifth turn, he deaths for all this graveyard spikes and verdant force. Second game he beats me down as I play 6 1/1 creatures. Why have you forsaken me, LEONARD RICHARDSON? Matches: 3-1, Games: 6-2 Round 5: Sligh Wow, a matchup where my burn is not card disadvantage. First game I draw 7 creatures and burn, no land. I mulligan to 6 creatures and burn, no land. What in the world? I mulligan again and keep my 1 mountain draw as I get beat down by a big flying rock. Highlight of this game: shocking his mvp creature, cinder crawler? This guy is smoking some serious rock. His friend agrees that cinder crawler is "the man." WHATEVER. Apparently this is the cinder crawler deck that made top 8 in Houston last week. I am motivated to show my dominance over pussy red mages summoning crawlers. Second and third games, I don't mulligan and take control like the man I am. Matches: 4-1, Games: 8-3 Round 6: TradeAwake I love playing against feeders and weavers. Lube me up! Game one, I slip and slide my way to victory. Game 2, he establishes control, and I have like no hope. I blow up the world because that's what red mages do for fun. He goes, "in response, sac my feeder for life. I'm at 24." I figure it hasn't actually resolved since blue mages do lots of stuff on my turn and remind him. "Oh yeah. First I tap it with tradewind and return oath of druids to my hand. And I capsize (with buyback) my forest. Hey, your hand goes away." Okay. He has like 10 cards in his hand now and I lose. Game 3 was Miracle of the Day. (look in /etc/motd). I go first turn fanatic, second turn fireslinger. He goes second turn blossoms, fourth turn weaver, fifth turn tradewind. I have like 3 mountains on the board. In my hand I have a shock, a burst, and a panic button. I draw... ANCIENT TOMB. I blow up the world again and go into Red Mage Ecstasy. LEONARD RICHARDSON! Second part of Miracle of the Day goes into effect, and he draws no land in the next 11 turns (holding oath, 3 whispers, wall, etc). I do bad things to him and he is justifiably unhappy. Matches: 5-1, Games: 10-4 Oh yeah, thanks for everyone who gave me cards earlier. I was rather put out by the guy who wanted $2 for an Ancient Tomb, but hey, he took 2 allures and a monk instead. If I owe you cards, you can email me because I have a lot more cards than I started with. Round 7: Sligh This dude gets a name because he is a nice guy and qualified at this qualifier. He Is Jeff Clark(e). He tells me I am #3 and that he is 3-0 vs sligh today. He advises me to draw and I do so. Matches: 5-1-1 I make it into top 8 as fourth seed. Jeff is fifth, so he gets to play me with his 3-0 vs sligh deck anyway. Other decks in top 8: A "bad" sligh deck with 4 stone rain WW CPhoenix x2 Living Death x2 Or something like that. I would have been more than happy to play against CPhoenix because Leonard's red deck wrecks it like 19 out of 20 games after boarding. But as it is, I play against the sligh deck to end all other sligh decks. Round 8: Sligh He goes: first turn 5/5 flyer, beat you down 7/7 because he is InSaNiTy and cannot block. Holy Toledo! Second game he calms down and takes 4 turns to kill me. Wow, my chances at going to Rome are dashed. The next round, he got paired against the "bad" sligh deck. I don't think a sligh deck can beat him. He plays no flunkies, 3 gnomes, and 2 rathis. And more stuff after boarding. I guess it's nice to get matched up against sligh 6 times in the same tournament. I really think it'd have a tough matchup against a control deck, but when you don't expect to have to play any, you can sodomize your fellow red mages and enjoy it. I'm not at liberty to give out my decklist, but here's a partial one to give you an idea what I played: Decklist: ----------- Some Goblins Some Bolts Some Mountains LEONARD RICHARDSON, Summon Legend. In roughly equal proportions. Well, hope everyone I know goes to Rome and wins big bucks. I have no such desire, since: __ Italians are all cheaters! Hehe. Props: LEONARD RICHARDSON LEONARD RICHARDSON LEONARD RICHARDSON LEONARD RICHARDSON LEONARD RICHARDSON LEONARD RICHARDSON LEONARD RICHARDSON Jeff Clark(e) for qualifying with TASSDTGMUASSTIOT*. Blowing up the world 3 times. Eric Knipp for showing me how bad CPhoenix is against sligh. Everyone who gave me cards, even the guy who wanted lots of money. Me for playing LEONARD RICHARDSON's deck and doing well. Slops: DCI not paying people's way to Rome! DCI rule that you can't shuffle your opponent's deck! Cinder crawlers in sligh decks. Have you no pride? Miracle of the Day for killing a good player and a good deck. Spikes. You guys can suck my pole and like it. * TASSDTGMUASSTIOT: The Anti-Sligh Sligh Deck That Got Matched Up Against Sligh Six Times In One Tournament. Pronounced: "das dtg mu ass shot", translated: "that's (grunt) my ass-shot" Well, that's my report, nothing more to scour for information. Ps: CPhoenix is not a viable deck against sligh! -- killrb@utdallas.edu
