Subject: PTQ Seattle Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 18:58:11 PDT From: "Lance Conrad" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Here's your God Damn report!!!!! If you want to know who won- it was either Terry Tsang with Humility/Prayer or Jeff Fung with Living Death. I didn't stick around. If you want to read on, I will try to make this as entertainig as I can. Went to a PTQ. One night searching for a deck, my friend and I started screwing around with type II blue/green oath decks trying to make them legal for rath cycle. Unbeknownst to me, my friend had been looking at John Ormerod's hidden report in the Dojo and basically copied it. Damn, I thought we thought it up ourselves, but I must take credit away from Sam(fucking HACK!!!!) and give it to John. I must have been drunk. I don't even remember getting drunk, so I must have been completely wasted to the point of brain death. This is the deck I woke up with and took. (In case you care) 2 Ref Pool 3 skyshroud forest 1 Wasteland 10 Islands 8 forests 4 spike feeders 3 spike weavers 2 Rootbreaker Wurms (yes, you read that right) 2 Ephemeron 4 Oath of Druid 2 Intuition 2 Reclaim 4 Counterspell 4 forbid 2 capsize 3 Scroll Rack 4 Whispers Board: 4 Propaganda 3 Tranquility 2 Verdigris 3 Scagnoth 3 Dismiss don't take this deck unless you expect to see creature heavy decks all day. I read some reports from the grand prix with trade awakening decks have oaths in the board for sligh and h8red decks and from last Saturdays experience, i think it's a good idea. It beats living death most of the time. I saw a lot of living death, just never directly across from me. One other note-I made this deck under the assumption you could use the oath more than once during the upkeep. I think I must have been drunk or something... I would find out most embarrasingly that my assumption was, of course, incorrect. I have no excuse for being an idiot. Round 1 B/R a deck that looks suspiciously like Ruan Marias's creation. (hope i spelled right) So I think, no problem. I'll just get an oath out and activate it five times during my upkeep. (Stop laughing). Game 1-no green mana. Board in 'gandas. Game 2-Get oath. Activate it once. Get spike feeder. Attempt to activate twice and almost get mugged by five judges telling me what an idiot I am. What can I say, I was probably drunk. I still win. Game 3- no green mana. Turn 4 I intuition for forests, but he has this big ass double maniacal raged jackal pup kicking my ass, so one forest isn't going to save me. Never see propaganda game 2 or 3. 0-1 Round 2 Justin Rider/Humility Justin always has the worst luck against me. Game 1 he draws crap. I kill him with a weaver and feeder. Board out a ton, board in everything but the 'gandas and the kitchen sink. Game 2 he gets no blue mana. I kill him with a weaver and feeder. Did I mention Justin has the worst luck against me? 1-1 round 3 H8red Game 1 he gets a fast start. I have no oath, so I have to tap out to cast a weaver so I don't die. He goes "culling to the weak." I swear to myself and start to pick up my cards. He lays a bottomless pit. (?) I blink, stare at him dumbfounded for a second, and realize I'm still alive. Get an intuition, grab and oath, rack and put a rootbreaker on top, and let the beatings begin. His eyes bluge out of his head when I flip over the top card and it's a rootbreaker wurm. Rack lets me keep good cards from falling into the pit and I reclaim my and oath it out after it runs out of fog counters. Board in 'gandas Game 2 he has that "I'm going to kick you ass" look on his face that dissapears when a prapaganda hits the table. He looks down, counts his two lands, and realizes he's in trouble. I intuition for an oath, get a rootbreaker out, and commence beating. Note:this deck is fun. If winning isn't a big priority for you, then take this deck just for the sheer enjoyment of seeing someone's face when you oath out a rootbreaker wurn. 2-1 Round 4 Peter Radonjic/Sligh I know Peter is playing sligh. Just one of those things you hear. He starts asking who told me he was playing sligh. Well, Justin didn't really SAY you were playing sligh, he just asked me if I had 4 chills in my board. Game 1 I get a perfect draw vs. sligh, which is basically something like at least two land and an oath. Oh yeah, having two rootbreakers as the first two creatures helps. I think he though I was playing awakening. The look on his face when I oath out a rootbreaker wurm was priceless. If I didn't know him better, I'd say he was looking at me like I was an idiot. Come to think of it, he was looing at me like I was an idiot. Peter - ROOTBREAKER WURM?!?!?!? Me- Yep Peter- You don't want to put out something TOO big, like, say, Verdant Force? Me- Nah, doesn't go well with the Oath Peter- Oh, yes, like you should have trouble killing someone with a 7/7 creature. Next turn I oath out the other rootbreaker. I don't know if the canadians were laughing at him or me, but it was a funny situation as Peter was tring to figure out a way to win with 2 6/6 tramplers staring him in the face. Board in 'gandas. Game 2 I get another god draw (2 land and an oath with a propaganda thrown in for good measure). Sligh is fast enough to take me down if I don't get an oath right away, but it happened both games and there wasn't much he could do. He got to use the Oath once second game and got a Rathi Dragon. When I capsized it at the end of his turn, I thought he was going to reach across the table and punch me. Peter, by the way, is a very cool guy and a pleasure to play against. Some of the funnest games I've played in a tournament have been against him. He probably won't think these were up there, but it was worth playing this deck just to do that. 3-1 hey, six rounds. I can draw in if I win next round. As if god punishes me for thinking such vain thoughts with a stupid deck, he puts me against... Round 5 Terry Tsang/Humility No problem. I beat Justin playing the same deck. (didn't I?) Game 1 I draw like three oaths. Real useful, eh? I get a rack out and look for something useful, but I have such a disadvantage first game and he wiped his ass with me. Game 2 I board in everything but the gandas and the kitchen sink. Doesn't help much because all of the tranquilities were at the bottom 20 cards. We fight over whispers and despite the fact I have a little mana advantage at first, I don't present him any real threat. This was a long ass game, the kind you get a headache playing. After he grinded my tranquilities and countered my second reclaim, it was over. Note:Terry used mana leaks in the board instead of dismiss and he ruled me in the counter wars because of it. 3-2 I drop to play in a booster draft. Twas fun. I'm giving in to the dark side and playing something predictable next time. Later, Lance ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
