Undoubtably, results from all over the country and from this weekends GP in Boston will be flooding you all, and to add to the deluge, I humbly submit the following report of Team Rogue in the Chicago PTQ for Rome. After being given hell for my lax reporting of the sealed (ick) season, I reopen report season with some gusto. The PTQ was run by Level 3 Head Judge Barrat Moy, picking up 74 people. 6 (!!!) Rounds. This was, by far, the smallest turnout I've ever seen in Chicago. Part of that can be attributed, I think, to the amazing amounts of advertising and networking former Chicago TO Todd Hanson had for events, and part because of the foreign PTQ ("Rome? Why?" many will say). The Following Teams showed up for the fun: Team Rogue - Madison/Milwaukee/Chicago Team Portal - Illinois/Michigan/Indiana Team UltraPro (formerly Team ACD) - Chicago Team RJA (Ron James Army) - Milwaukee Team Rogue brought the following: Adrian Sullivan - Mad Spike Girls Gone Mad Brian Kowal - SS Living Death Jim Hustad - Mad Spike Girls Gone Mad Aaron "Shazam" Souders - CCG Jacob "Danger" Janozka - ECA Awakening Dan Bock - well, he was the dealer in the room today... $$$ Sexecution Society (informal non-Team Rogue associates): Zaid Maxwell - Mad Spike Girls Gone Mad Kevin Mergen - The Mad Auratog Deck Into the Tourney: ROUND 1 - Shawn Velez - Chicago - WW/u Cataclysm Shawn was a pretty nice guy, running a fairly intuitive WW/u deck running some surprise sideboard cards. Game 1 - He gets a massive swarm, and I simply can't get to a Weaver. Game 2 - I Thrull Surgeon a Cataclysm out of his hand very early, he begins the beatdown, and I summon a Weaver. Unable to stop the Weaver, he Raths (getting 3 WWs a Weaver and a Stronghold Assasin). I start Dancing Assassins on him and eventually beatdown Game 3 - I get some early Spikes and Spike one up big to deter Cataclym (6/6 Feeder)... Eventually he crumbles to it. MATCH/GAME: 1-0/2-1 Jim loses 0-2 to Humility/Prayer (Ken Wallach of Team Portal) Brian wins 2-0 versus Long Red Jacob loses 1-2 versus Trade/Awake Aaron draws with Spellshock R/W Zaid wins 2-0 versus U Control Kevin loses 1-2 to Black Hate (Herbie Lukes of the former Team ACD) ROUND 2 - Mark Slapac - Northbrook IL - Tim's Curious Mom Mark is playing a trick deck: Mind Over Matter on Curious Rootwater Hunter. Cute. Mark is a very good junior, formerly on Team ACD's Junior Team. Game 1 - He surprises me with the combo from out of nowhere, and I am wrecked. Game 2 - I Wall of Draw recurse and steal a Tradewind. I slowly disrupt his creature based elements of the game and he concedes to get to game 3. My deck eats his in games 2 and 3. Game 3 - Someone told me this matchup was a race: Him to 6, Me to 3 Mana. He wins. Capsize lock with me having 2 land on the table... :( MATCH/GAME: 1-1/3-3 Jim wins 2-0 versus B/R Attack Brian wins 2-0 versus Red (Ray DeGuzman of Team UltraPro) Jacob wins 2-0 versus Red Aaron wins 2-1 versus Trade/Awake Zaid wins 2-1 versus WW Kevin wins 2-0 versus G/R Atack ROUND 3 - Harry Zych - Chicago - GR-"Texaco" Harry is playing a slightly unhoned deck, but is genuinely a fun opponent, very careful and interested in his game. Game 1 - He gets out an early pheonix and sweeps the world, but I come back with recursing Spikes and overwhelm his remaining defenses. Game 2 - I drop multiple (3!!!) vineyard in the first few turns, and he burns like a mad man... My spikes dance their components around. MATCH/GAME: 2-1/5-3 Jim wins 2-1 versus B/R Attack Brian Wins 2-0 versus Red (Cliff Wallach of Team Portal) Jacob wins 2-0 versus Mad Auratog (Kevin) Aaron loses 0-2 versus Trade/Awake (drops) Zaid draws 1-1-1 versus SS Living Death (Waiken Soo of Team RJA) Kevin (see above) ROUND 4 - Cliff Wallach - Chicago - CabalRogue/TeamPortal Red - Team Portal Cliff is a regular on the tourney scene and his teammate Elihu is a member of Cabal Rogue. I pretty much know what to expect here, including his Secret Sideboard... Game 1 - This deck is made to rock Red in game 1. I do. Feeders/Weavers/recursion... I pretty much walk him. Game 2 - I'm in a winning position when his Super Secret Sideboard card comes out and eats me alive. Game 3 I guess... :( Game 3 - Once again the Super Secret Sideboard hits me, but this time, I recover pretty quickly, and set down a defense anew (3 Wall of Draw Square off Versus Jackal Pups), The Soldier hits the table and finishes him. MATCH/GAME: 7-4/3-1 Jim wins 2-0 versus WW Brian Wins 2-0 versus HumblePrayer (Ken Wallach of Team Portal) Jacob wins 2-0 versus Red Zaid wins 2-0 versus WW ROUND 5 - Sam ??? - Greenwood Indiana - U Control Sam was playing a fairly common mono-blue control: Tradewinds, Rootwater Hunters, Buyback, Medallions, etc... Game 1 - He gets into an early control situation (I draw no threats... :( ) and he drops Big Sexy for the finish. Game 2 - I drop an Early Automaton, knocking him low on life, he begins to stave off my offense, and I finish him with 10 minutes remaining. Game 3 - I'm in pretty strict control from Surgeon Recursion, but run out of time before I can finish him. MATCH/GAME - 8-5-1/3-1-1 Mathematically eliminated from a chance at Top 8... :( Jim wins 2-1 versus CabalRogue Red (Elihu Feustel of Team Portal) Brian draws with Brandon Rutter Jacob wins 2-0 versus Red Zaid loses 2-0 to FinkelDeath (Mike Donovan) ROUND 6 - Zaid Maxwell - Mad Spike Girls Gone Mad I convinced Zaid to play this deck just before the weekend, and here we are paired against each other!!! :/ Game 1 - I slowly gain control, but he recovers. Eventually, we are in a silly situation: neither of us can kill the other. The Volrath's Stronghold wins me this game. Game 2 - No time... He concedes unhappily. MATCH/GAME: 10-5-1/4-1-1 Jim cannot finish his Trade/Awakening opponent in time 1-1-1, eliminated from top 8 running Brian draws in Jacob loses 1-2 to U-Control Zaid loses to me.
