Subject: BW Tourney report Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 16:01:37 -0700 From: "Andrei B." Hey, Yesterday, I played in a small (14 people) type-II tourney and decided to write a report. I was playing with a almost-but-not-quite Sucide Black deck. Surprizingly enough, most of the people at the store ended up playing Black Weenie or old-school Necro. I threw together the deck in the half-hour preceeding the tournament and shuffled it for the first time before the first round :-). Here's the deck listing, if I remmeber it correctly: Creatures: 4 Black Knight 4 Knight of Stromgald 4 Fallen Askari 4 Dauthi Slayer 3 Foul Imp (Should've been 4 Skulking Ghosts, but I couldn't find any more) 1 Skulking Ghost // 4 Erg Raiders Artifacts: 4 Cursed Scroll 1 Nevy's Disk Other: 3 Terror (Should've been 4 Terrors, but I couldn't find any moe) 1 Diabolic Edict // Land: 2 Volrath's Strongholds 18 Swamps Sideboard: 4 Drain Life 3 Diabolic Edict 2 Perish 3 Gloom (probably Light of Day would've been a better choice) 3 Bottomless Pits Round 1: vs. Shawn (Player-X) Frozen Fish Game 1: My opponent shows a lack of knowlege of the deck, which he, apparently, is borrowing from another player at the tourney. Fast victory. Game 2: Very similar. The guy who Shawn was borrowing the deck from came by and was whining about how much Shawn sucks with the deck :-). Round 2: 5cB Game 1: Close game. I saw Suq'ata Lancers, Mogg Fanatics, Man'o'wars, lots of good stuff, but he wasn't fast enough. I side in 2 Drain Lives. Game 2: Somewhere around turn 5 a Ligth of Day hits the table. Ouch, that's bad. He goes on throwing his Mogg Fanatics at me and putting them back on top of his library with a V's Stronghold. I am down to 3 life when I Drain Life him for 10. He Mangara's Blessings. The game could've went on that way for a while had I not noticed that there was an Erg Raider in play on my side and that I already took a whole lot of damage from it. He seems relieved, as it was a close game. Game 3: I side in the rest of the Drain Lives and get a *perfect* hand. He, on the other hand, is manascrewed. Fast victory. After the game, I find out that he only had one Light of Day in his SB, anyway. Round 3 (semi-finals): Reanimator deck. Game 1: He Merfolk Traders on the third turn, discrads a Verdant force. Animates it on the third turn, drops a hidden horror, etc. I don't see any of my creature removal. Game 2: I side in all the creature removal and Drain Lives. Draw an opening hand, there is only a V's Stronghold and no other land. I mulligan, and there is only one swamp and the Drain lives and other mana intensive stuff. Mulligan again down to five cards, have only one swamp again. I decided that I should draw one pretty soon and played with it. Big mistake, didn't see another one for 3 turns. In the meantime, he got out a Hidden Horror and discarded another one.. I conceded the game. The tourney was elimination, so I was out. Damn, there was a 70$ pot. The other decks in the tourney were 2 Suicide Blacks, 1 Sligh, a couple of WW/u or En-Kor trick decks, Bottle-ish Necro, and 5cSliver. The Reanimator deck ended up facing an En-Kor deck in the finals and beating it, although the En-Kor player did get a Phyrexian Furnace out. I think I am going to put in a main-deck Animate Dead and a couple in the sideboard. Props: Seth and Idoh for helping me build the deck in a _very_ limited amount of time. Slops: Erg Raiders, for killing me.. and my deck for Mana-Screwing me. -- Thanks, Andrei B --------> /\/\. (o). |>. / \ | Master, Master, Where are the dreams that I've been after?
