Subject: Type2 Tourney Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 22:00:57 -0500 From: Spaceboy To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Over the past weekend of May 9, I went to a local cash tourney. It was type 2 for $150 1st, $100 2nd, $75 3rd, and $50 4th. It was 5 round swiss with a cut to final 8, it wasn't sanctioned unfortunately. I played a nifty little deck that I had put together the Wednesday before. It was a kinda jank-style deck. I made the mistake of thinking that there would be alot of tradewind, Zvi, and Donais. I was very mistaken. Sligh was still fairly popular, as was suicide black. The big surprise came from the number of WW decks. This was an okay surprise though, because none of them made final 8. Well, on to the report. Round 1: vs Sligh (I kinda forgot to get names) Game1: He starts. Mountain, Mogg Fantastic. Me plains. Him Mountain, Mogg Flunkie. Me tithe. My turn, plains, wall of essence. He groans and plays a Viashino, then attacks with the Viashino, Flunkie, and Mogg. I block the Viashino, gain 4 then lose 4. Next turn I play a Solitari Priest and that's basically game. Game2: Similar to game one, except I geddon. Round 2: vs Hermit Deck Game1: He stars cycling for his needed cards. I get him low on life, he doesn't get the combo. Game2: I beat on him till he's under ten, then he gets the combo and kills with a 25/26 Revenant. Game3: I start beating on him. He plays druid, I kill it, he plays another, I kill it, he loses. Round 3: vs 5cr I didn't expect this deck and also made a sideboard mistake. Game1: He plays a Shadow Guildmage 1st turn. I realize that it will kill my Solitari Priests and then he plays some creatures and eventually kills me with a Barrow Ghoul. Game2: I play an early priest, he gets guild mages, I kill them, that basically nets the game. Game3: He gets 1st turn guildmage, I preced to lose. A note to myself after this match was that the guildmages kicked the crap out of me, well his creatures too, but anyway. I play 3 Cursed Totems in my side to shut down tradewinds, and Hermits. I didn't side them in against him. I also left all of my anti-artifact/enchantment stuff in, even though he was only playing a couple of scrolls. Round 4: vs Pox (It was running those must discard on your upkeep cards, I forgot the name) Game1: I get out some walls, he gets Gnomes. My creatures die, I lose my hand, he loses his hand. I get out a wall of essence (very key). I destroy all of his scrolls, he has a hand of zero, and ensnaring bridge. He gets out his 1 scroll thats left, and I have out a scroll too. I do a goofy little combo for life gaining with the scroll. I declare my attack and then scroll my wall to gain 2 life so that his scroll won't kill me (the judge said that all damage dealt during the combat phase is considered combat damage). He starts using his volraths stronghold to keep putting his gnomes back on top of his library, then drawing them gaining 3, putting them back, etc. I realize at this point that I am going to win. I just wait it out until I have another scroll and a disenchant. He then loses his scroll, and I double scroll him each turn. Some of his friends had gathered at this point to watch and they got a kick out of the game. Game2: I get a 2nd turn Solitari Priest, then use the one armour in my deck and armour it next turn. It smack him a couple of times, then he Diabolic Edicts, by then He's low enough on life that I burn him to death. Round 5: vs Suicide Black We ID. Final 8: 1st seed: my 5th round opponent 2nd seed: someone playing a Gerrards/counter/cap/gridstone deck 3rd seed: my 2nd round opponent 4th seed: Me 5th seed: one of teem Lush (Spud)'s members playing humility/orims prayer 6th seed: my 3rd round opponent 7th seed: ??? 8th seed: ??? The pairing were all screwed up for the final 8. They were: 1st seed vs 3rd 2nd seed vs 7th 4th seed (Me) vs 6th 5th seed vs 8th The finals were single Elim. with the losers playing for 5th-8th prizes Finals Round 1: I am really mad that I have to play this guy again right now. It's fun to play him though because he's a really good player, and a nice guy. Game1: He plays 1st turn guild mage and alot of fast creatures, I lose. I remembered to side in my Cursed totems this time. Also at this time all of the other games are finished but one, that is the Gerrards/Grind deck. The Hermit guy did two strait 3rd turn kills. Game2: I draw an opening of: Plains, Tithe, Disenchant, Plain, Plains, Gemstone, Undiscovered. I play Plains. He plays a scroll. I draw a Plains, play a plains, disenchant the scroll. He plays a guildmage and Fantastic. During my upkeep I tithe, then i draw an Undiscovered. He plays another creature. I draw a land. He attacks. I draw land, he attacks, I draw land, attack, wall of essence, he burns it to death, attack, land, attack, land, attack, land, attack, land, attack, solitari priest, he kills the priest with a guildmage and attacks, I draw a cursed scroll and play it and then kill his guild mage with it (I had all 4 undicovered in my hand. He plays an uktabi and kills me. By the way, my next card was a land. All of the people who were still sticking around came and watched this game. All of them walked behind me and watched each of my draws. My life sucks. Anyway the Hermit guy plays my opponent and wins, and I didn't bother to stick around to see who won in the Gerrards deck vs the 8th seed game. Both of the people in that game agreed that if they won they'd split with the Hermit guy and so that was about it. Oh yeah, I had to play Randy from Team Lush(Spud). I won. The other guy I would have had to play forfieted to me so I got another neat card carrying case. Whooped-doo. I then preceded to ride my bike home from the college. I rode out ther because I didn't have access to my truck. On the way back the pedal fell off and like crcked so I had to walk with my bike home. An overly shitty day. I am still planning on playing the deck at regionals though, with a little tweaking, and the addition of shadow guildmages. Thats all for now. Gabriel "spaceboy" Stoffa
