Subject: MVW - TSPT Report Date: Fri, 08 May 1998 17:02:07 -0500 From: Chris Donald To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Well, this is my first tournament report I've written, so it might suck a litte. I just decided I'd write a report about my experiences in Lubbock. Ok, I went 2-2 in the main tournament on Sunday, May 3rd. But I also finished in the Top 64 along with my friend Nathan Porterfield. Two days before the tournament I was debaiting over runing BBBE or 'Tog, since I didn't like BBBE much, I decided to run 'Tog. This was probally a good desicion because the deck killed fast, and it can take BBBE down fast. I qualified using ErTog (went totally undefeated in the Qualfier in Amarillo, TX). So, now on to the report. The Deck: 3 Gemstone Mine 2 Undiscovered Paradise 2 Bad River 7 Island 10 Swamp 2 Song of Blood 4 Man-O'-War 2 Sage Owl 3 Cloud Elemental 4 Ertai's Familiar 4 Necratog 4 Nekrataal 3 Shadow Guildmages 2 Crypt Rat 3 Hidden Horror 2 Barrow Ghoul 2 Tombstone Stairwell Sideboard- 2 Bubble Matrix 2 Dirtwater Wraith 2 Mind Harness 3 Disenchant 3 Elephant Grass 3 Touchstone Round 1 - Playing vs U/R Frenetic Deck In game one I threw down so much fat it wasn't funny. I went 1st turn Guildmage, 2nd turn Familiar, 3rd turn Barrow Ghoul, 4th turn Hidden Horror, it didn't last very long as he has to throw Ophidians and Man-O-Wars in front of my creatures. I won pretty quickly, and game two was basically more of the same. 1-0 Round 2 - Playing vs Anti-Tog Shit, this is the only deck that can give me trouble, and I face it in round 2. Well, the first game we traded hits all the way to 2 life points each, then he throws down a clutch Scalebane's Elite. I get bitchslapped by the elite. I lost. Next game he got a 3rd turn Maro! But I happen to top deck a sideboarded Mind Harness. I throw it on the Maro and my opponent gets worried. But he throws down another Maro. I accidently draw, and lose the Maro because of the Harness' upkeep not being payed for (damn lack of sleep). I lose due to complete overrun. 1-1 Round 3 - Playing vs ErTog Hmm, just about the same deck I got, except it has main deck Honorable Passages. When it is Tog vs Tog, it is all about the Familiars, who gets them running more efficently will win. And I got them running very efficently in game run, overruning him with Tombspawn tokens. In game 2 I got him down to 2 life before he started coming back thanks to MoWs and Nekrataals. Then I top deck a Dirtwater Wraith (it's all about swampwalking beatdown). He has one turn to live, can't get rid of it, I win. I also hold his creatures off throughout the game with Elephant Grasses set up perfectly (drawing all 3 in opening hand was godly...) 2-1 Round 4 - Playing vs BBBE Well, I play vs Ogilbee, and he has the best day in topdecking vs me someone can get. Because of that I get my ass beataround by the Illusionist/Biskellion combo. I fall both games, but I almost had him in game 2 with my Stairwell, but he impulsed for the card he needed to win... a Boomerang. Damn, but I'm happy with grabbing $150.00 for the day. Now that the tournament is over I decide that I'll play in a T2 Side tournament. I was running a nasty White Weenie deck that I've been play testing for a few weeks. This was an excellent choice because I made it to the finals (which we took a draw and split the prizes). So, here is a report on the T2 Side tournament I was in. I'm still testing the deck, so I won't reveal it here... yet. Round 1- Playing vs Some R/G/X deck, never saw what it was because I gave beatdown too quick. It's all about Armored Priests when the opponent can only remove stuff using Red DD. I win on turn 5 easy. Game 2 is basically a repeat, as I slaughter him again. 1-0 Round 2- Playing vs a Sliver Deck He never got the Crystilline Sliver out, so I gave his slivers plenty of paper cuts using my Cursed Scrolls. I beat him down using shadow (I'm starting to respect shadow now actually). Second game is more of the same as I slaughtered him. 2-0 Round 3- Playing vs Tradewind Geddon Hmm, if I could ever be a good topdecker, this game proved it. Game one he never got control as Shadow gets past the Walls of Blossoms fairly easy. Game 2 I knocked a lot of life from him, but then he got the rider going. I was in trouble, but then I topdeck... my Korean WoG! I Wrath, I throw down 2 creatures, I win. That was probally the last of my luck that day. 3-0 Round 4- Playing vs a B/U Control deck 1st game I can't topdeck enough Disenchants to handle his Steel Golems, so I die easy. Now in game 2 I sided in 3 Auras of Silence, I was sure to draw Artifact/Enchantment removal, right? Well I didn't and he drew like 3 Dreads of Night! But I give the Scroll beatdown, but he bairly wins. 4-0 Round 5- Playing vs NecroControl He conceeded to me because he had to leave (It was 8:00pm and needing to get back home, it was evident) but we split the prizes between the top 3, and called it a day. Props- To Hatter for running an excellent tournament. Too bad this is the last one also, I enjoyed the free money a lot! The Dojo for having an excellent resource in Magic. And to the top 4 of the TSPT Slops- Not really any slops for me today, as I had fun all day, but if I gotta give one out, it will be to Impulse... :) Chris Donald
