Subject: The Monastery Date: Thu, 9 Apr 1998 01:26:20 EDT From: Cobalt187 To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Well, I attended a local tourney at books&comics on Sunday, we had an average tournout(about 20 people). After playtesting all of Saturday I had my deck choice worked down to Steel Necro or The Monastery. As you can see by the title of this report, I did not choose necro (mainly because I couldn't get a hold of any Snake Baskets or Volrath's Strongholds). Here's the decklist The ISP(Isane Scrub Posse) Monastery The Combo: 4 Humility 4 Orim's Prayer The Engine: 4 Tithe 3 Scroll Rack 2 Enlightened Tutor (tithe for plains, get a new hand if necessary, then tithe or tutor the crap away) Denial: 4 Wrath of God 4 Aura of Silence (disks suck) 2 Jester's Cap (travis hate enchantment removal) The Kill: 3 Grindstones The Rest: 3 Gaea's Blessing 4 Mind Stone 2 Fellwar Stone 4 Gerrard's Wisdom (must...not...succumb...to...burn...) 13 Plains 2 Vec Townships 2 Quicksands (should be 60) Side Board 4 Warmth 3 Choke 3 Phyrexian Furnace 2 Disrupting Scepter 3 Disenchant On to the report Round 1-John Tatum-Turbo worb/geddon with numerous counters game 1: First turn howler for him (island, mox diamond) and I know that I'm in for a marathon game. To make a long story short, the worbs and geddons don't effect me as much as other decks and he canes and I scroll rack a blessing to the top and grind myself (uncounterable feldon's cane!) twice and he concedes game 2: Get an early cap off but he has the cane in his hand, damn it! He has control the whole game while countering only my grindstones, mana rocks, and blessings. And after about 7 turns of drawing 5 cards a turn, he canes and geddons. I know he has about a million counters in his hand and I have about 6 turns till i'm decked so I pick up my cards so we can start the third game. game 3: This game goes awhile. I manage to squeek a grindstone in but he worbs us and after i manage to untap three lands and I check my library; 4 cards, one of which is a blessing. If I don't draw my blessing, I can grind myself for a feldon's cane. I start to draw, just as I start looking at my cards the judge calls time...the blessing was in my draw. John starts getting mad and telling me that I should've conceded because I didn't have a chance to win and I just can't seem to explain, to his satisfaction, that the reason that I didn't concede was because I could've milled the blessing if I didn't draw it. After the match I realized that I could've milled myself during my upkeep because there were 3 white cards and a blessing left. 0-0-1,1-1-1 Round 2-Ben Carter-Sligh game 1: I get the combo out as he is stuck on a conscript and a flunkie, yay. Note to Sligh players: DO NOT PLAY WITH CONCRIPTS AND FLUNKIES. Not being able to attack really sucks. game 2: He hits me for a while as I gerrard's, FOUR TIMES!!! Sligh can't handle it, game. 1-0-1,3-1-1 Round 3-Rick Weathers-5CU Donais game 1: Damn It!! I hate playing control vs. control, it takes far too long. He lobotomizes my grindstones, I cap his blessings *sigh*, this game is going to be too long. Eventually I cap him again and blessing so I'm up on cards in my deck. About turn three billion or so, he fireballs me for 17 and incinerating me. WHAT!? I hadn't even expected that! I thought I had the game won when I capped one of his fireballs, I had'nt even thought about him having another fireball. I'm such a scrub. game 2: I should'nt even call this a game, he lobotomizes me three times pulling my caps, gridstones, and blessings. He fireballs me out of existence. 1-1-1,3-3-1 One more match win and I'm in the final eight! Round 4-Albert Henson (fellow insane scrub)-Mono-black Control game 1: Turn 3 Humility, turn four Orim's Prayer, turn five aura, game. game 2: See game 1. 2-1-1,5-3-1 Semifinals-John Tatum-not again game 1: He manages to get all four howlers out and I get all four auras out. An early grind eats his cane. 15 years later, I have 3 cards in my library, he has two, he says go. I nuke two mines, draw and say go, I win! game 2: I don't remember much from this game except that I won. 3-1-1,7-3-1 Quaterfinals-Eden Roberts-Black Attack game 1: His turn 1 ritual, sarco, KoS, is met by my third turn Humility. He has no enchantment removal and I cap out his drains and incinerates, he quits. game 2: Same as game 1, but I cap out his sideboarded tranquil domains and tranquilities also. 4-1-1,9-3-1 Finals-Robert Tate (another scrub posse member)-Bitch Ass 14 game 1: An early Humility coupled with his lack of main deck disenchants wins me game 1 game 2: He buries 2 volcs and a spirit, living deaths and runs me over game 3: A turn 1 furnace forces him to bury and death in the same turn. He cant pull it off until I have the lock out and I cap his disenchants. I win the tourney!! Props and Slops- Props: My Team-for losing to me. Hey, we're splitting anyway, right? John Tatum-for not taking his anger towards me too far Joseph Crospy-for making it easier for me to win the tournament by not showing up for the tounament. Team Beefcake-for having really cool members Rick Waethers-for whooping my ass Trisha Davenport-for ahveing such a cool last name:) Slops: Rick Waethers-for whooping my ass John Scheel-for matching me up against other control decks three times while having only 4 control decks in the tourney Eden-for not giving back bobby's plateaus Me-for misspelling Rick's name and for bieng too lazy to fix it C ya Travis Davenport Not to be confused with Trisha Davenport, I don't even know her, but she did make a kickass WW deck.
