Subject: TOURNEY REPORT: Type 1 4cAw Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 03:02:37 -0500 From: "Aethersplat" To: hello, this will be my first tourney report here, and it was a surprising tourney for me, so i'll share. 4cAw (4 color Abyss white(this was you can pronounce it :).. ) anyways, this one was surprising for two reasons: first, i won, second, i played an untested deck. down at 'da shop, it was type 1 fridays, and all my decks were kinda ick, so about 45 min before the tourney, i decided to make a new deck. by the time i'm done, i have just enough time to fill out a deck list and start the first round. :) anyways, here's my previously untested deck: Blue: Ancestral Twister Psi-blast Green: Bug Regrowth Black: Demonic tooter Abyss x2 White: (the guts) order of Light-beer duskrider falcon x3 Disenchant x3 Soltari Monk x4 (these guys were great!) dust to dust (i found these super-effective) Swords to Plows x4 Aura of Silence Balance White Knight x4 Empyrial Armor (this won me soo many games!) Reprisal x2 Wrath of Dog Order of the White Shield Tariff (also effective (erhnams are bad)) artifact: mox diamond x2 Zorb Land plains x5 Karakas (just in case) U. Paradise City 'o Brass Gemstone Mine Tundra x3 Scrubland x3 Savannah x2 Mishra's x4 Library of Victory 'Da Board: 2x Hydroblast psychic purge mangara's blessing dust to dust suleiman's legacy forsaken wastes (an excellent choice) 2x cop:red Armageddon (anti-buyback or mana intensive etc.) Light of Day Sacred Ground Perish (duh) 2x Extinction (it's great to make a sideboard right before a tournament(there were 2 sliver decks) anyways, 12 participants, so today was sanctioned :) 0:0 Round 1: Weisman guy he went first, tundra, beta sapphire. i say oh crap, i wish i stuck with 'da zoo. i play a land, say go. he plays something else, go. i play falcon. it pretty much goes like that for a while. he then swords my falcons, leaving me with grounders, so he plays a moat. oh great i say, but at least i haven't used any disenchants left. so my happy decks gives me more grounders and land. by the time i have the 'chant, he has enough counter to stop a train. he mirrors and fireballs for the kill. board in hydro's, dust to dust, and the WASTES. second game i get the beatdown, he doesn't get the moat. he's at six with a mirror out, i have 5 lands untapped. he walks, and mana burns with cities during his discard phase. he asks "do i have any fast-effects at the end of my discard phase?" i say yes and psi-blast him. i grin, he looks at his hand, and then at his life. he pyroblasts it with his other city. i say okay, then hydroblast the pyro. i laugh 'cos he killed himself :P third game i get the beatdown, he doesn't get the moat. he's at five, i have 5 mana again, with a mishra's and a monk (happy monk). he has a city and something else untapped for blue. i play... FORSAKEN WASTES! i smile again, he sees that he's totally screwed no matter what he does, and concedes. whoa, i beat weisman with white weenie. :) 1:0, 2:1 anyways, round 2: spam with janky blue white thing. game 1 he gets mana screwed and dies to monk beatdown with 2 islands and a feldon's on the table. Game 2 he gets land, i play some knights etc, he swords some and balances the rest. i say okay, and play an abyss. he then casts flippy's and swords them to gain life. oops. i twister 'cos i have 2 reprisal, 2 swords, and a tariff, and he has no creat's. i get swords, dust, creats. he goes twister happy and disenchants stuff and swords a monk. i get 2 mishra's and the Library out, and i then show him superior topdecking skills and attack with mishra's 'till he die :) oh, i didn't board 'cos i'm morally weird, that i don't board against people who get mana screwed :) 2:0, 4:1 anyways, Round 3. Chris Selnes with Cheese-Powered Slivers. i smile 'cos i have a secret weapon in my 'board, so i can lose the first one and do okay. oops, guess i don't have to. i play a scrubland, mox diamond, monk. he lays a forest. i draw, play a savannah, and empyrial armor the happy monk! i attack for 5 shadow. he plays some slivers, i draw and attack for 6. i say go, then get really mad cos i could've tutored for the ancestral and ancestraled me and killed him a lot, but oh well. he attacks with slivers, i say ow, draw a card, attack for 7. tutor for ancestral, go. he concedes with 3 slivers on the board and a big shadow in front of him :) second game, secret weapons go in (extinctions). oops, guess this game is like last one, only he gets mana screwed and i don't. monks and other various pro-black creatures beat him up. :) chris is usually annoying to play against, but this only took 5 minutes... i think i like this deck :) whoohoo, i'm undefeated and 1 round left. i'm guaranteed some prize :) 3:0, 6:1 Round 4 Andrew Mosiman (i think) with T 1.x land destruction/beefies. game 1, i get the early beatdown with monks, falcons, but when he's at 5, he plays a triskelion (!) and pings my 3 creatures. oops. i draw crap, and say go. he then stunted growths me, and i say crappo. he takes it after the shadow beatdown. game 2, sacred ground and perish goes in ('cos he's using elfs (elves)) we play, i get jiggy with a turn 1 Light-Beer next turn Empyrial (maybe it was like, 8th turn L-B but it was still pretty bad). i apply beatdown, and he runs in fear :) he tries to do some silly stuff with a biskelion and my birdies, but i swords the 'lion 'cos i like my pro-black dudes :) Game 3, the deciding match. he mana screws, i apply beatdown, he tries to come back and has too much to do in too little time (before i call time on his life, that is :).. ), and he gets romped with some monks :) 4:0, 8:2 cool, i won after facing weisman round 1 :) get a Gift Cert. so i pick up a couple of Dualies (you can never have enough). i would say that my deck did pretty good for a white weenie deck with some ultra-annoying back ups spells :) only used the tariff in the friendly games after the tourney, i still like it in there against evil creatures. i also think that this deck's strength lies in it's lack of artifacts and most enchantments. if the abyss or "moxen" don't come out on game 1, they're safe during game 2 :) i will also end up using dust to dust all the time now 'cos it's cool. abyss monk/knight/bird is an evil deck, i can play weenies and you can lose your creatures. and it does really well against counter decks, too, i think 'cos everything's cheap and i can fill up my hand quick... overall, it was a fun tourney, and i proved that most type 1 decks evolve towards a more zoo-ish style.
