Subject: Tounament Report Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 16:46:08 -0300 From: Fabio Pedrosa To: Hey Frank, I`m here for my first tournament report! Brazil Regionals , with 8 rounds of swiss. About 90 people showed up... a good number for here! The day before the tournament I playtested alot with my friend Carlos, it helped so much him because i had not played magic for 6 months or so... so playtestig was really good. He chose to go with a WWpropa/geddon and it had empyrial armors too...not the best deck to go with, but it was not too complex and good against sligh (there are many sligh decks here) I went with a Suicide black, well, first because I love black and it was a pretty fast deck (slow decks around here just LOSE!). Oh I forgot the Wall of Souls that kills sligh. After a few hours of sleep ( who sleeps before a big tournament anyway?) I eat something and head to the Tournament... When i get to the club there are a few people that I reconize. 5 seconds after I step into the room three guys are asking me to borrow'em some cards... Furnace of Rath, Kindle, Pyroblast... Ok.. On to the tournament! First I would like to say that smoking in the room where people are playing should be forbidden! Man! It's hot enough, it's asfixiating enough! Damn it... I don't know if in the USA it is, but here it is not. *sigh* Round 1:vs. Felipe -Playing a weird W/b with carrion ants?!?!?!?! Game 1: There's not much to say about game 1...Really... You know those random scrubs that you always play against on round one? Well I always do. He lays a Plains and nothing more... I lay some shadow creatures and start the Shadow + Unholy Strenght beatdown.I win, fast... Game 2: Ok, now he goes: Swamp, done. Me: Swamp, lotus petal, dark ritual, black knight , dauthi horror... He: Huuu... can you show me how did you do that again please? Me: Sure =) Next turn he lays a plains and watch me beat him with my creatures + unholy strenghts. I felt sorry for him... it was his first tournament, and this is not a good begining. Matches: 1-0-0 Games- 2-0 Round 2: vs Demetrius - Playing suicide black. Pretty much the same as mine. Game 1: A cool guy. His deck is almost the xerox of mine. But he has bad moons, and I have Unholy Strenghts ( wich IMHO are much better ) First turn he plays a swamp , dark ritual , black knight. But that's everything he does the whole game, he's mana screwed. I get a good hand with a couple creatures and some mana. He blocks my knight with his knight. Ok both die. The next few turns I just play creatures... he does nothing as I said. Game. Game 2: In knight of the mists. Out terrors. Now, this was a tough/pretty close one. He goes first: Swamp , ritual, black knight and unholy strength ( wich I thought he didn't have ) . My hand doesn't look good. with only a swamp and underground river. Some shadow creature too... I lay a swamp.Go. He puts another unholy strenght on his knight... Me: What!? Huu... Oh yeah... I think "6/4 first strike second turn" this is not good!" Well he starts the beadown. I`m laying creatures, but all of them with shadow, and that doesn't help. He's creature screwed, but with two more turns i`m dead. And when I`m at 2 life guess who shows??? Yes, Knight of the Mists!!! booom ! die black shit! With no threat against me the game is all mine! Matches: 2-0-0 Games 4-0 Round 3: vs Georgius ( Demetrius brother ) - Playing a pretty DUMB burn! Game 1: I`m not happy with this one. I know that burn should crush suicide black ( wich has no defense ) And it did. He won the coin toss ( wich is baaad! ) and starts with a mountain. I look at my hand and say "What? 6 swamps 1 lotus petal?" ( no mulligan this tourney.. i wonder why ) And I`m waiting some my creatures to come... but they never do... I die. Fried! Game 2: This time my hand was ok... but his hand was bette... Bolts and more Bolts! Some fantastics too. He lays a Wildfire Emissary wich I can't block with my shadow shits... *sigh* He finishes with two fireblasts... Game. I should have come with red ( you know, if you can't beat'em join'em! ) Matches: 2-0-1 Games: 4-2 Round 4: vs Inacio - Counter-Hammer Game 1: Inacio is my friend... He's cool! So I know this is going to be a great game, no matter who wins. Well I start with a swamp, lotus petal, black knight. He plays a island. Next turn swamp ritual 2 more creatures... At this point I know I won, since I have a mana leak in my hand, wich would counter his threats... Game 2: In chills. Out terrors ( big mistake! ) I should never take out terror against counter-hammers since it's the only way for me to kill Superman ( Sibilant Spirit ) and Wildfire Emissary...My hand is good with lots of creatures. But he started and had force spike. When a Sibilant Spirit hits the table, I know I`m dead! Game 3: He get's mana screwed and i just crush him. Slow decks just can't get mana screwed against a Turbo_superfast_dark ritual_black deck.... Matches: 3-0-1 Games: 6-3 Round 5: vs Daniel - Playing 5CG with Tradewind and Armaggedon. Game 1: Daniel is also my friend. But everyone in the room is saying that he's deck is the best. And he's going undefeated. Okay, i`m not afraid. But i change my mind when I see my opnening hand... shit... creature screwed again... That cannot happen against Daniel's deck. If you do not take control in the first ten turns, he lays the lock and you're dead. And that's what happened. Tradewind + creatures + Armaggedon = Toast! Game 2: See game 1. Except that this time I had a lot of creatures, but he has removal... And a 12/13 'Goyf! I think i`m gonna cry! =) Matches: 3-0-2 Games: 6-5 Round 6: vs Diego - Playing R/G with overruns. Game 1: He starts with birds and elfs. Me with shdows and knights. And so we go. Beating each other, but he has burn, and I don't... So i`m at 5... I cannot attack because i`m short 2 points of damage...so i don't attack. He has his small creatures like elfs, birds, ghazbán ogre. I`m holding a mana leak in my hand. So he says "Attack with all my creatures and play Overrun" so I say "OK dude, I counter your Overrun and block your creatures with my firsy strikers... kill all of them" He's shocked... hehe... So the next 2 turns I attack and kill him! wow pretty close. Game 2: He's mana screwed... I mean , no red mana = No removal. No removal = Lotsa creature on the table. Creatures on the table = DEATH. sorry dude. you're cool. But mana leak is cooler! =) Matches: 4-0-2 Games: 8-5 Round 7: Alexander - Suicide black. But with fallen angels. Game 1: I get a good hand, but not too much creature... And against another suicide black you need more creature than your opponent. My creatures are just hiding somewhere in my deck. And i`m dead in less than 10 turns Game 2: See game 1. But this time I win the creature run. Game 3: We are both creature screwed but. But he's creature and mana screwed i guess... I wait for my creatures to come. And the do. I kill him. At the end he shows me his Fallen Angel. and I say "Nah! These are just too slow for your deck, and are not worth the trouble" Matches: 5-0-2 Games: 10-5 Round 8: vs Bruno - Sligh Game 1: Not much to say. He kills my creatures and some mogg flunkies send me to hell. Oh yeah.. he had a scroll with seven card in hand and said "Kindle" me: "Ok" and I pull a kindle... oh well at the end of the game he said he only had one! =) Game 2: Chill Chill Chill Chill! My best hand in the whole tourney. swamp , dark ritual , lotus petal, swamp, chill, erg raider, black knight... Oh... First turn chill second turn 2 creatures... hahaha... I look at his face... He says: you're mean! =) Game 3: First turn chill just kills sligh... give up sligh boys! Matches: 6-0-2 Games: 12-5 So I`m in... To make things short: I beat Demetrius in the final 8 but lose the next 2 games... But yeah... It was a good tourney... Since i bought 4 cursed scrolls for 20 dollars... =) Cya! Fernando Lopes
