Subject: TOURNMENT Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 11:25:14 -0400 From: "Rev. Fizer" To: Magic Dojo In preperation for the DC regional (only the third major event I've attended) I had started with several decks including WW, Sligh, Black weenie/land destruction and 5cg. I lacked several major cards for all but the sligh and WW. I opted for the sligh having played variations at many local events, but I didn't have scrolls or tongs. I had read in the "Duelest" that true sligh could beat cursed sligh and I was confident. My greatest fear was ProsBloom and did I ever study on how to stop it. I get to sleep about 1 a.m., get up late and leave at 7:30 to start on the three hour drive to BWI and arrive at about 9:30. I see several familure faces including John Slaughter & "Wolfie" RD 1 vs ProsBloom My worst fear and I know that he can do me in on turn three, four or five and my main deck doesn't have pyroblast. Game 1: He gets mana screwed and the game is Mogg, Digging Team, Mogg, Jackle Pup, Incinerate, Fireblast XXX Game 2: I side in pyroblast. He Prosparity's on turn 4 hoping to pick up part of the combo, but doesn't. He gets the bloom and squandered resourses out on turn eight but by that time he's at 4 and I Fireblast him. XXX 1-0-0 RD 2 vs Cursed Sligh This guy's DCI number was under 10K and I knew that he was going to be my toughest challange of the day. He wants to roll a die, I decline. I offer a coin to toss, he declines. I suggest rock paper sissors, he says no. I say well I guess then you'ld better get a judge. Judge says Toss the coin, it was to be my only win this round. Game 1: We trade damage and I've got the advantage 14-10 then I unwisely use my Goblin Vandal as a blocker; then scrolls came out. Ouch, stop it. Ouch, stop it. Ouch, I die. Game 2: The second game went a lot longer as we both pushed for position. I wasn't going to give up my vandal he took him out with direct damage and then it was a repeat of Ouch, Ouch Ouch..., Ah experience. 1-0-1 RD 3 vs Slivers Game 1: I keep hammering him with direct damage and haven't drawn a single creature. He gets out a Muscle, Crystal, Muscle and then a Queen but by now he's at 4. I have just one Fireblast in my hand and four mountians in play and draw a second 'blast. He says "Fireblast" knowingly as I sac two of the mountains he then counters it. I start to sac the remainding mountians and he says loudly, "No way. There's no way you drew another fireblast." {Top-decking is cool:)} Game 2: He gets mana screwed and my deck seems to have know it deleivering a turn four kill w a blast. J-Pup, Incinerate, SA Lancer, Shock & Ball Lighting coup de grace w/ Fireblast 2-0-1 RD 4 vs Cursed Sligh Game 1: He gets out only one land in four turns but that's game with double Fireblast. Game 2: He gets his anti-weenie (AetherFlash/CoP:R) lock in place, I get scrolled to death. Game 3: see game two. 2-0-2 RD 5 vs Bushwhacker This guy sets down and complains about how he's 0-4, he's only staying cause of his friends, ya-de-ya-de-ya-de. So, he wins the toss and I say I guess your luck is changing. Never give another your energy. Game 1: Sligh is just to fast. Game 2: The day is beginning drag and my lack of experiance will cost me this game and the match. He gets a chill in play and I set there with 2 pyroblast in my hand until the end. He keeps telling me what the cards do but I wait for him to call the judge (a total of five times whewr he's right three). Fatigue & lack of knowledge. Game 3: Chill & i set there agin with pyroblast in my hand like an idiot. Hey, where did that Living Death come from? Call the judge - No: The controller of the spell does not determine what order the other player puts his creatures back into play from the graveyard. Good, so then I pyroblast the Man-O-War and not the Chill Can you say, "Coffee, please? 2-0-3 RD 6 vs Hermit Druid Game 1: Never saw a Hermit, game over turn 4. Game 2: Never saw a Druid, game over turn 5. The combo is killer but like ProsBloom fragile. 3-0-3 RD 7 vs White Winnie Game 1: It's a matter of speed and direct damage. Game over turn 5. Game 2: It's my first game ever against the en-Kor and he seem to enjoy my attempts to kill off the pesty little SOB. Finally, I get it but to late as he drops CoP:R. Game 3: Block with the en-Kor and send the damage to the Soltari Priest. I just can't get rid of them!!!! I become obcessed with the creature and forget tha direct damage was met for my opponant. Opps....., by the time I recover from this lapse, he's got the priest in Emp' Armor. 3-0-4 RD 8 vs Big Blue He takes control early both games sweeps me 1 - 2. This guy was undefeated but didn't place, to many ties. 3-0-5 RD 9 vs 5cb game 1: Unanswered: J'pup, Mogg Fanatic & Mogg Fanatic, Ball Lighting, sac the fanatic's after the attack on turn 4 & shock game 2: J'pup, J'Pup & J'pup, Ball Lighting, Shock. 4-0-5 :) Dream Wizards & Staff. :) John Slaughter (8th place) "You've only been at this nine months? :) Then you just where you should be. Here's a tip the next hot card is..."" :) Dan Ford for giving me somthing to do between rounds (get your mind out of the gutter). :) Hoilday Inn for the lunch specials. :( Holiday Inn staff for letting us run out of water & lack of air circulation. :( John Long (1st Place) for looking me up and down then not shaking my hand. Lessons learned..... 1> Sleep, plenty of it before an event of this magnitude. 2> Pyroblast those Chills and any other blue card. 3> Coffee, tea, any caffine. 4> Play like John Long to win, i.e. play long. 5> Scrolls rock. 6> en-Kor rock. 7> Jot down opponant's name for report.
