Subject: SW "EL Paso Bounce" M Cavey "TOP 8" Date: Mon, 18 May 1998 13:28:15 EDT From: KV Magic To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Another regionals is behind us! Sitting at 3rd in the world for Type 2, I thought that I would receive an invite. But my composite score sits at 120 in the world, so the EL Paso crew and I packed up the Jeep and headed to New Mexico for the South West Regionals. We took various decks including the "El Paso Bounce" that I had built weeks before. "EL Paso Bounce" 4 Tradewind Riders 4 Ophidian 4 Man o' War 2 Suq 'uta Firewalker 3 Counter 3 Mana Leak 2 Dissipate 1 Lobotomy 4 Saphire Madalion 2 Impulse 1 Whispers of the Muse 2 Capsize 2 Stasis 3 Propaganda 13 Island 2 Swamp 4 Underground River 1 Wasteland 1 Quicksand 2 Volwraths Stronghold Side Board 2 perish 3 chill 2 gloom 1 dread of night 2 lobotomy 1 jesters cap 1 mana web 1 legacy allure 2 evergy flux Round 1...vs. Bruce Roman--red/white weenie armor Game 1: Opening hand for me, 2 Man o War! I delayed long enough to get out the tradewind/stasis lock, and win the game. Mana Leaking his last effort Fire Storm sealed the game for me. Game 2: Bad hand for me. He lays 2nd, 3rd, and 4th turn 2/1 Shadow!! Ouch. I lay Ophidian, Man o War. His shadows beat me down to 4 life....he is at 20. But never fear, I get the Tradewind Rider, lay the stasis.....the game is mine. 1-0 Round 2...vs Josh Frankel--Sligh!! Game 1: I get early bounce and win the game. Game 2: Much of the same, I win the game. EL Paso bounce eats Sligh. 2-0 Round 3..vs Thomas Bligh--Sligh w/ Forsaken Wastes. Game 1: Thomas is a teammate of mine. He has a good deck and is ready for me. First game he beats me down to 2....he is at 20!! I finaly get the stasis to finish the lock. In response he fire blasts me, but again I have the Mana Leak. Its over for him. I beat him down with a Jelly Fish. Game 2: Again he comes out fast beating me to under 10 life. I lay double chill and propaganda. Get the lock and its over for him. Suq 'ata Firewalker finishes him. Thomas has a good deck! He ends up going 5-2, just missing the finals. 3-0 Round 4..vs Carlos Rodriguez--En Kor/Mog Maniac. Game 1: Carlos is another teammate of mine. This is a bad match up for him. I get the Tradwind/Stasis/Capsize lock with ease. I Counter a last effort Firestorm attempt and he concedes. Game 2: Much of the same as game one. He cant handle Chills and Glooms. He attempts a 7 point firestorm, I dissipate, he concedes. 4-0 At this point Hatter does a deck check..the deck is cool. I also notice an "Austi-Night" watching the game. This guy is pretty cool...Lance, was his name. Apparently the Austi-Nights sent members to various regionals. They have so many STRONG team members, I am sure that they will have a big presence at Nationals. Round 5..vs. Jacob Stirles--Draw Go!!!!!! Game 1: Its a counter war but I get out Ohidian, Man o War, Suq 'uta, and Tradewind. I start the Tradwind and Capsize all of his land to lock the game down. He realizes that the Firewalker will just ping him to death so he concedes. Game 2: He counters EVERTHING!! I manage to lobotomize him and grab 2 dissmiss from his hand. He is pounding me with a steel golom. He gets out a disrupting scepter and starts to empty my hand. I have to discard a Cap, dissipate mana web, and impulse. But I still have a stasis in hand. I am at 2 life when I get out the Tradewind to go with my helpless ophidian. My Tradwind stops his Golom from attacking. But I need miracle to win!!! He taps out to lay a disk and disrupt me. I need some serious Top Decking skills NOW. I draw....a Man o war!! I lay it and the stasis.....ITS OVER!! I win. 5-0 without a game loss!! I am ranked #1 and will probalbly draw into the finals. At this point I would usually change sleeves to prevent sticking. But I decide not to. BIG MISTAKE.!! Round 6..vs Robert Thornburg--Mono Blue Good Stuff. Game 1: Robert is a good friend of mine from Las Cruces. He placed 6th at Pro tour Dallas. Anyways, here is my land draw for the game. Island, Qucksand, Wasteland, Volwrath Stronghold. I lose!! Game 2: Where is my Mana??? I have a chance to win this game though. I can get the capsize/stasis lock but I have to tap out...Hmmm I go for it...He disrupts me.....I concede. 5-1 Here is some advice....Change your sleeves in the late rounds...its DOES make a difference. Round 7..vs Leanard Wafford...white weenie. We draw into the finals! 5-1-1 I am going to Nationals!! Props-- That Austi Knight guy, Lance. Hopefully we can share some deck ideas for the Nationals. My good buddy Don Gallitz. He is one of those Tongo guys. I will see you at Nationals Donny. Hatter and Goddard....good Tournament, guys! Miguell Gutierrez, Derek Del roSario, Thomas Bligh, Kelcy Land, and the whole El Paso crew. Slops-- none......it was a good, fun, tournament. Write me with your thoughts....
