Subject: 1x Tornument Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 20:25:36 EST From: Tonypatron To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Ahhhh, a free Saturday afternoon. This usually means tourny time, and this week is no exception. The venu, Mike's Cards and Comics in N. Chelmsford, Mass. The format, extended. I had perviously built a R/W/G deck for extended. It revolved around direct damage and Geia's Blessing recursion, with the white added for STP, Land Tax, and Disenchant. After promptly getting stomped by a few different extended decks, I put this deck on hold. So, there I am, Friday night with no deck to play the next day. I decided to go back to my mono red Land D deck. I use 12 Land destruction spells, backed up by a spiff of direct damage, and alot of red phat. 4x Stone Rain 4x Pillage 4x Fissure 4x Lightning Bolt 4x Incinerate 4x Fireblast 3x Wild Wurm 3x Wildfire Emisary 2x Blood Moon 2x Earthquake 1x Orgg 1x Balduvian Horde 1x Kareveck's Torch SIDE BOARD 4x Flashfires 2x R.E.B 2x Burnout 3x Serrated Arrows 2x N. Disk 2x Builder's Bane Red Phat. Oh, how I love true phatness. Now, let me explain the use of the phatness I chose. Emissary is tit in extended, no questions asked. I would have loved to have more Hordes or Orggs, but I traded all my Hordes except one after Alliances went out. And it seems I just can't find my Orggs...pisser. So, I went with what I had, and added my soul brother, namely, the Wild Wurm. I took so much damn trash talking from the other competitors for this selection, but they seemed to sing a different tune when The Reverend Wild Wurm was preaching the 5/4 sermon on thier sorry asses. Well, it was the usual small turnout, smaller actually, with only 9 competitors. Numbers mean didily. In attendence where the Guevin brothers, Tom fresh off his total suck performace in PTLA, hey, that's how he described it too. Other strong locals in attendence were Alex Buck, Ned Santee ( sorry if I hack the spelling) Damon Sakewitcz ( REALLY sorry on that one dude) and Mike Zabbo. ROUND 1 ( 0-0, 0-0-0 ) Patrick something??? ( didn't take notes) Blue/White scrub deck GAME 1 Wow. I get to go down to scrubville...he he he. We start, and I go first. I play mountain after mountain, and begin the blood bath. Stone Rain, Pillage, Bolt, Emissary, Orgg, Fireblast....it was a blur. He didn't have three lands out consecutive. He was mana hosed anyway, and I wasn't playing a big part in the solution of the problem. GAME 2 This is what I hate about playing scrubs. Seems everyone of em' I play, that play white, play like every COP standard in thier deck. And, second turn, sure enough, COP Red. I, being the overconfident fool that I am, decided that I don't need to side board. Yeah, right. He drops 3 assorted walls, enough to slow down and the phatest of the phat. I draw and fire 5 LD spells!! He just keeps drawing land, and counters a few of them. He then pops Control Magic on my phatness. Pisser. I blow up my own phat, but decided to give this game to him, and do some side boarding. I put in Flashfires, and my anti-blue counters. GAME 3 You know when they stall at 2 land, your gonna have a fun time. I blow up what's left, and drop the Reverend Wild Wurm, proceeding to do the Wild Wurm beatdown dance. I know, I shouldn't gloat. I reduce him to a splat on the wall, game set match. ROUND 2 ( 2-1, 1-0-0 ) Tom Guevin White/Blue/Green/Red Ick...Guevin. Oh well, came to play. I know he's playing Gerry Control. For those of you not familiar, it's a deck that initiates instantaneous cramping in the abdominal area. This is the gist. Tithe, get land. Counter everything, stopping occasionaly to Wrath or gain a sickening amount of life using Gerrard's Wisdom. Speed through the deck with Whispers and Impulse. And finally, after all this, use Geia's Blessing to return the Wisdom and counter spells. You eithier lose because a) He decks you b) He decides to add insult to injury, and recur the 4 Bolts and kill you...sick c) You concede when he's at 60 life. GAME 1 I get a fast start. Drop some LD on him, and bring out the phatness. Wild Wurm is pain v.s. control, because they don't know wether or not the Reverend is going to have divine intervention, and make it to the table, or if the creator is going to summon him back. As well as I seemed I was doing, it was not to be. He Tithed like a crazy man, and always had the counter for my Blood Moons ( which are total tit in extended, they would have wrecked him), and the Wrath was there when the Emissary actually hit the table. He starts the Geia's recursion, I have no chance, I concede. GAME 2 My sideboard is looking mighty good right now, and I'm kicking myself in the ass for not putting Tormod's Crypt in, even though I know I should have. I play first, and get out a Stone Rain quick, with a lot of bolt action. I drew a Blood Moon in the opening 7, and I draw a second one 3 turns later. I drop one, and he counters. My attempt to Burout the counter is qucikly nullified by a Hydroblast, nuts. I play a Wild Wurm, and he counters. I'm thinking, this is great...he had about 4 cards left and only an Adakar Waste and a Savanah untaped. Hoping he wasn't hlding the Force of Will, I drop the second Blood Moon. He looks at it, and taps his Savanah for white. Son of a....grrrrr!! I put up a fight, but never actually get close to killing him, as good ole' Gerrard's Wisdom puts him up in the 40's. I end up concedeing. ROUND 3 ( 2-3, 1-1-0 ) Ned Santee Mono Black Phat I love playing Ned. He is seriously the nicest guy, and he's a greeat player as well. He's playing a Mono Black deck that kinda resembles Wakefield's Bone Dancer deck, except I never saw Bone Dancers. He's played it before, and it's quite a force. The mono black staples are their in Hymns and Drains. He uses Nekrataals, Edicts, and Carrionette for the creature removal. Carrionette is so tit, and it kept me inconvienced for quite some time. GAME 1 I really hate not having land...really, I do. I get one in my opening draw, and have to play catch up from the begining. I drop an early Blood Moon, there by eliminating his Factories and Wastelands, although, I have only 1 non-basic land to begin with. He drops and early Steel Golem, and Hyms away my Fissure. For those of you who think Fissure is a waste of space, try dealing with Ernahms, Vampires, and Golems by having to wait for the double bolt...it sux ass, and my phat was constantly being Edicted away...I go down hard. GAME 2 Uh-oh. I never sideboarded out one of my Flashfires. I hate these days, nothing goes right. Ned calls for a sideboard check, just to be sure. Everything is ok, and I apologize. He's the coolest guy. I go first, and my draw is pretty damn good. I drop three land, and Stone Rain some land. Ned draws only 2 black, but 3 Wastlands as well. I manage to blow up another one, but he keeps drawing them. I get Hymned again, and there go my Fissure and Fireblast...grrrrr. He drops a Golem, and I counter wih an Orgg. He stares at the Orgg, and we both realize he has to halt his assult for the time being, or some 6/6 phat is gonna paddle his ass like a red headed step child. We play more land, I kill some more of his. He plays a Carrionette, which is Incinerated out. Now, i have to keep 2 untapped, in fear the hand of death will return from the forgotten grave, and snatch my little Orgg freind. He gets out a Sengir Vampire, for which I top deck a Fissure. I get an Emissary into play, which I start to go to town with. He drops a Necrosavant, and I compliment him on playing with phat...phat is so tit. I trade the Emisary and a Bolt for his Necrosavant, and Torch out his Golem. Bwaahaahaa!!! The Orgg remains standing, and I get in two shots, followed by a Incinerate, and a Fireblast. GAME 3 I haven't sideboarded at al in this matc, and decide not to, as I have nothing that can really help. He makes a nasty face whenhe looks at his draw, and mine is a godsend. He plays his one, and only as it turned out, land. I blow it up, and Stock pile my own, coming up with a phat Emisarry. He gets 2 Wastelands into play, but they do nothing, and I drop a Blood Moon for good measure. The Reverend makes an apperance, as does the King of red phat, Orgg. I attack with all, and add Bolt and Fireblast for the match. ROUND 4 ( 4-4, 2-1-0 ) Pete Guevin R/W Jank Oh, yippe, the other brother. Well, if I win I might have a shot to get in the final 2. I really fear this deck, if the Soltari Priest gets hooked up with the Armor, I'm up shit's creek. ROUND 1 He starts off with a Land Tax, and against land destruction, that's a huge pisser. I face twin Savanah Lions, and manage to get out a Emissary, but alas it's too little too late. Both lions get real big real fast with Armor, and I get squashed. ROUND 2 I side out the land destruction, and put in Serrated Arrows, Disks, and all 4 flashfires. He drops an early Lion and an early priest. I attempt to bring out the Reverend, but my prayers go unanswered. He stalls at 2 land, with NO Tithes or Land Tax. I'm praying for a Flashfires, or more importantly, a Serrated Arrows. I draw the Arrows,do the "King of Topdecking" dance, and ping off his Priest. Whew!! I draw an Emissary, but need that key 4th land. He's hurting for land, bad. He attacks and bolts me, and I'm at 3. I ping off his Lion, and drop the Emisarry. I pray that he dosen't have a bolt to use with his Plateau, but being the great player he his, he does and I fall. Overall, it was a good day. I lost to some of the best, and beat some good competition. In the fourth round, both undefeateds, my cousin, Mike Zabbo, playing Cursed Sligh with alot of dual lands for a complete sideboard, beats Tom Guevin ( who is playing that disgusting Gerry Control deck) in the fourth game, via the critical Pyroblast he had to back up the Forsaken Waste. Tom, unable to gain life, could not outrace the amount of damage Zabbo dropped, and had his Serra hammered/bolted to allow the Frenetic to do some crazy damage. They split the meger 15 pack prize, not wanting to play the finals, which could last ALONG time. We all decided to go into a Tempest/Stronghold draft. I draft a red/green phat deck, but get crushed by Pete Guevin and a few others. Anthony "The BEAST" Patronick TEAM Whup-Ass
