Subject: tourny report :) Date: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 18:56:16 +0200 (EET) From: Hovi Kimmo To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com From Kimmo "Kimsta5" Hovi Hey there. Finally seeing some local action as the card/warhammer store expanded to have enough room to have tournaments. Too bad Babylon 5 just came out, it's taking the people away from Magic a bit. Anyway, on Friday February 6th, the first tourny at the Logi-Center took place. Not being sanctioned, and not exactly that well advertised, it only drew 7 players, as there were 2 Babylon 5 games going on. The tournament was supposed to begin at 4pm, and I arrive at the store at 3.45 having no idea what to play. I'd been toying around with a U/W/g deck the week before, and it had done pretty well, and a W/R Shivan deck which I only built because someone challenged me (the infamous no land mulliganer) to build a deck that used at least 10 5+ castinc cost critters and didn't use reanimation to play them. Well, opening my backpack and starting to wonder what to play, 3 guys come to me and ask to borrow cards. Well, good, I know what 50% of the field is playing :) After 5 seconds of consideration, I decide to go with the Staunchie deck :) Having people borrow red and black cards, I thought it would be pretty normal to play with 4 Chills and 4 Light of Days heh :) At this point, they closed the entries, and having only 7 people, decide to run it as a round robin with the top 2 playing it out for a whopping $25 in store credits heh. Also, since this wasn't a sanctioned tournament, and a round robin, too, we decide to kill the stupid time and round stuff, since none of us are reputed stallers. Some of us just play slow. First match: Mikko Heiskala (HePPu on IRC) playing red/green aluren/ball lightning thingy. Game 1: After a first turn Mogg Fantastic and a second turn River Boa, there's not much I can do with only 3 mana. Game 2: He's slightly mana screwed, and plays a fourth turn Aluren with a Lotus Petal. I'm thinking, and decide to Dismiss it. Good thing I did, he concedes when I'm connencing Staunch bwatdown him being at 2, me being at 45. He then shows me his hand. He'd been holding 3 Ball Lightnings and a Sandstalker all game long! Game 3: forest bird go reflecting pool go karplusan sandstalker attack go brushland go forest aluren 2 ball lightnings and a sandstalker attack game. (Strong). Now, being a good player, I blame this loss to Mana Screw (TM) rather than bad deck design or lack of skill *laugh* Geh. First match and I'm 0-1 I'm thinking if this was such a good idea. After the storekeeper gives me a free pop for organising stuff, I decide it was, heh. 0-1 match, 1-2 games Match 2: Jani (dunno his last name) playing black weenie with white bordered swamps. Game 1: Well, I don't draw a wrath. Nuff said. Game 2: Reflecting pool go swamp go adarkar wastes fellwar stone go swamp erg raiders go plains light of day go swamp ouch go land staunch defenders if you gotta counter I concede Game 3: This was almost a replay of game 2, except that I didn't play the Light of Day until turn 6 heh 1-1, 3-3 games Match 3: Tero "Taikaukko" Lindberg playing black/red Game 1: He plays 2 early creatures which I promptly Wrath away on turn 5, and counter the Knight he plays on the next turn. From now on, I'm in total control holding 3 Dismisses and a whisper. Game 2: He gets me down to one over time, and with a little top decking, I get him to concede when I start to recurse Wisdoms :) 2-1, 5-3 games Match 4: Klas Swanljung playing buried alive Game 1: After just reading Hacker's Invitational report, I laugh, as this is almost like Borer's and McCabe's, except that he doesn't have Living Deaths or Verdant Forces. He only gets 3 lands to begin with, and by the time he starts doing anything nasty I'm drawing 3 cards per turn with Whispers. Game 2: So he Buries 2 Spirits of the Night and an Aku on turn 3, and Ritual double Necromancies an Aku and a Spirit on turn 4, I drop a Light of Day, and next turn a Staunch Defenders :) 3-1, 7-3 games Matches 5 and 6: I guess I got a bit lucky, my last 2 opponents had already lost a bit, and noticing they didn't have chances for a top 2, they dropped out. Then again, one of the was a black weenie, and the other one was a Bloom. so I end up on top with a 5-1 having lost 3 duels, while Mikko Heiskala had lost 4. Well, we sit down and I propose the winner give the loser another $5 since his deck isn't the kind that's too kind to let you recover from mana screw. He doesn't take it though. Game 1: We exchange stuff, my removal and counters for his creatures, until I get 10 mana and start countering and Whispering like mad Game 2: Ok, I play a second turn Chill, third turn Aura of Silence, and a fourth turn Chill #2. There's not much he can do after I start drawing four cards per turn. He concedes when I play 4 Staunch Defenders on one turn at 45 life :) So, I ended up with a whopping $25 store credit, and a few laughs :) Long Live Permission Here's my deck, the Staunch Bwatdown :) 4 Counterspell 4 Dismiss 2 Dissipate 4 Impulse 4 Whispers of the Muse 4 Staunch Defenders 2 Gerrard's Wisdom 3 Spirit Link 2 Wrath of God 2 Aura of Silence 2 Gaea's Blessing 2 Fellwar Stone 2 Mind Stone 4 Reflecting Pool 4 Adarkar Wastes 4 Brushland 7 Island 4 Plains Sideboard:(As in "quick, gimme something that isn't illegal and I can cast!") 4 Chill 4 Light of Day 2 Nevinyrral's Disk 1 Spirit Link 1 Aura of Silence 1 Gerrard's Wisdom 1 Hydroblast 1 Scalebane's Elite Regards, Kimmo "Kimsta5" Hovi kimster@kso.kou.kaarina.fi
