Subject: T2 U Merfolk Deck "King Fish" Date: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 07:49:26 -0500 From: Al Sousa To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- King Fish The Super Merfolk Deck For the last several weeks I have used a deck in type 2 that has changed the way blue decks are played. I must admit the credit for the base design goes to Rene Hildago, a friend of mine. He developed the theory of the deck and how it would work. We both have worked on its developement and improvement. It is a deck that has only lost two matchs in its life under my hands and two under Rene's, the loss being to me. One of my losses was to my own critical simple mistake. The deck I talk about is a Merfolk deck. Dont laugh in the past weeks it has mauled and surprised the locals here and got me to the finals of a large Orlando tournament. Week 1 Rene Al ------ ---- -- Miami 12/29/97 6-0 Miami 1/3/97 6-0 Orlando 1/10/98 4-1 4-0-1 Miami 1/17/98 3-1 5-1 Miami 1/31/98 5-0-1 Miami 2/7/98 6-0 The deck runs on a simple notion, get a couple creatures out and protect them. I runs on two lands only thus has only 20 lands. The sideboard was the hardest to develope and is still in progress. Of what we know of the deck has a record as such against these decks. The deck is not easy to play. It is played with a certain non-blue mentallity and each move must be thought out as control and speed of opponent death at the same time. Sligh: Wins1 95% of the time Big Blue: Wins 90% of the time Stompy: Not tested enough, seems 60% Cursed Stompy: Tough time against it as the winter orbs dont affect Stompy and the cursed scroll kills fish!!! Black Weenie: Depends on draw but usually 60% White Weenie: Depends on draw but usually 70% Propa Orb: Wins 80% of the time 5CG: Not tested enough, only time played against it I won but it was close Counter Burn: Wins 75% of the time Necro: Untested but should win Pox: Untested but should win easy Land Destruction: Untested but should win, I only need 2 lands Most of the time the deck wins by surprise because people dont have the appropriate sideboard to deal with it. The typical anti-blue sideboard is useless pretty much against it. An anti weenie sideboard doesnt work too well because of the counters. It is a board control deck that uses 8 counters to work the board along with 4 winter orbs. It out speeds weenie decks and out plays blue. I would post the deck but it is that good!! Also the creator of it, Rene Hildago, doesnt wish his master piece to be shared at this point. The sideboard itself is very unusual but works with the deck. The biggest problem the deck faces is weenie/cursed scroll decks that are not affected by the winter orb. I have seen the other "fish" decks out there and this one by far is much better, an so simple to build. Well I know what you think, Im full of it. I am so confident about this deck that I would take it to ANY large level format competition. I have in Orlando and went undefeated. Rene only lost to me in Orlando, that shows you. Ill update posts on the net about the deck and the tournaments it wins. Right now I call the deck "King Fish", I cant come up with a better one but it truely is king of all the other fish decks. If you have a better name send me a line along with any comments.
