Subject: type 2 tournament report Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 15:14:39 PST From: "Gabriel Wilson" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com gabwilson@hotmail.com Type 2 tournament Location: Eternal Elysium, Portland OR Saturday 1-31-98 Last weekend I made my second trek from little o'll Grants Pass up to Seatle for a pro tour qualifier. Like last time I went up I crapped out with a 3-4. Instead of telling you about how mana hosed I got at the qualifier I've decided to tell you about the 25 person type 2 tournament I was able to attend the day before at Eternal Elysium. I have been playing strait blue in type 2 for about a month. Although I have been placeing well with it, I decided to try something different. I went with a nontraditional strait red deck. If anyone has been on the net lately then you have heared all the talk about how powerful cursed scroll is, and if any of you were like me you did not understand why everyone was going nuts. Well lets just say I know now. Here's the deck: 4 cursed scrolls 2 ruby madalion 1 scalding tong 4 steel golem 2 fireball 2 disintagrate 1 torch 4 incinerate 4 thunderbolt 4 kindle 4 fireblast 2 lightning blast 1 firestorm 1 furnace of rath(I dreamt about forth turn furnace+2 fireblast) 2 earthquake 1 something red that I can't remember 4 quicksand 17 mountains sideboard: 3 shatter 4 pyroblast 4 boil 1 goblin vandle 2 guy who can blow up nonbasics(what the hell is that called again?) 1 earthquake(so should have been main deck) round 1: guy playing sliegh with scrolls he wins the flip(going second when playing red vs red is might as well be the mach. first game. he goes first turn vandle, second turn ironclaw dork, third turn ball lightning. I go nothing(I had a scroll but it would die to the vandle, nothing, nothing(wondering why thunderbolt cant even do one damage to stuff on the ground. Basically he is way to fast for me. second game is just like the first exept he honarable passages everything I try. match score: 0-1-0 round two: some guy playing humility+orms prayer+try to deck my apponent by playing anvil of bogardan and not using it myself game one: He goes first turn enlightened tutor for humility. I go oh shit all Im playing is burn he he. Five turns later I burn him to a crisp. Playing red sure is fun. game two: He goes first turn enlightened tutor for circle red. I go oh shit...... This is were I learn about the power of cursed scroll. I go burn burn burn burn, he goes cop cop cop cop cop. then I go double scroll action double scroll action double scroll action... he goes "do you think I can still make it into the top eight?" match score 3-1-0 round three: some guy playing blue black shadow creatures. game one: he goes first turn blood pet. need I even write more? match score 6-1-0 round four: some kid playing classic stright blue(also known as: after five turns you will never have a nother perminent in play for a period longer than it takes to say capsize buyback) game one: I barely burn him fast enough. one more turn and I would have been stuck at one land interlude: I thought that the first game would have been tough but then I would be set after sideboarding in four boils and four blasts, how wrong I was. game two and three: he goes second and third turn chill. I cant even throw my red cards away so I can get to reasonable scroll range, how depressing it is when it takes five mana pyroblast just to get it disrupted:( 6-2-0 at this point I'm pretty sure that I'm screwed but I say what the hey and decide to finish since there is only one more round. round 5: some kid playing red green with both giant growths and elvish furies standard. game one: with out going into much detail lets just say I won match score: 9-2-0 (I have a slight chance, but it doesn't look good) There is a lull between the rounds and the final eight. As I am walking around I'm asked if I want to play for fun. I think to myself "whats funner than playing for money". After about 2 minuets of persuation we play for one dollar. BFD. We play two matches, also known as four games, also know as I get my ass kicked by a sliegh deck ,also known as I lose 6 bucks after the anti goes up after the first game. The good news comes in: I made the last slot for the top eight. top eight round 1: some guy playing pendral mist natures revolt + diamonds game one: I burn him faster than he can get the combo game two: he plays an early circle red, I play an early cursed scroll(what the hell was wotc thinking when they decided that cursed scroll should only cost 1). top eight round 2: My friend Ivan that I drove up with. He's playing and original five color blue deck. He won this same tournament last time with five color black but he said that he changed it because he was afraid of reap. Unfortunately there was no reap to be seen game one: Two words: cursed scroll game two: I berely pulled this one out after having a earthquake disrupted when he had an ouphidian and a saq' ata firewalker out. Finals: the guy that I played for the six bucks:( I offer two draw but of course he refuses lucky for me as he gets terrible draws two times in a row while I get the god draws including three steel golems. well I won $60 thanks for reading, feel free to email me with comments or blatent put downs. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
