Subject: SLIGH TOURNEY REPORT Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 08:45:23 -0500 From: Michael Cavoto To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I haven't seen too many Sligh Tourney Reports lately, but here's mine. This past weekend, my friend Sean and I went to our first tournament. He hasn't been playing too long, but I've been playing since The Dark and Revised were out. I had tried to go to tournaments before, but I never seemed to be able to get a ride or get enough money for registration. I know it's only ten bucks to get in, but when you've got a girlfriend you got to have money to go out with her. The night before the tourney, I went out to a dance and didn't get to bed until 12:30; that turned me into a virtual zombie for this tournament. Of course not eating anything but a sandwich for breakfast also isn't good, but I was determined to go and win my first tourney. So here goes nothing. R1: vs. Brian, U/W control G1: I get out a Jackal Pup and two Mogg Fanatics. They, along with some Kindles, bring him to 8 life. His next turn he Gerrard's Wisdoms for 10, but it doesn't save him as I eventually finish him with a Fireblast. G2: He sideboards, but I decide not to. His deck seemed to come alive. He gets out 3 #%$*&^@ Howling Mines, 2 Propagandas, Miser's Cage and a Chill. I conceed. G3: I side in 2 Funaces of Rath (Bwahahaha...). This was my favorite game of the day. I go first and on the 2nd turn I play a Fireslinger, he does nothing. 3rd turn I play a Sandstalker and take him to 15. He then taps out to play a Propaganda. On my 4th turn I play a Furnace and Double-Fireblast him for the finish. Everyone who saw that fell off their seats laughing. 1-0 matches 2-1 games R2: vs. Visho Doshi, Mono-Blue G1: He sits there helpless as I swarm him and finish him off with a Fireblast. G2: We both sideboard. I side in 4 Pyroblasts and 2 Boils. This game was a little more interesting than the first, but not by much. He plays Ice Floes which I get rid of with my Wastelands. I Boil 3 of his Islands and play a Cursed Scroll. He conceeds after the next turn. 2-0 matches 4-1 games R3: vs. Georgia, Mono-Black G1: She's a slow player and relies on Bad Moon A LOT! I swarm her for a while and then I get a surprise; she plays a Salt Flats and disenchants my newly played Cursed Scroll! I didn't know what to expect after that but my swarm finishes her just the same. G2: Neither of us sideboards. I sit on only two lands and draw all my 3cc stuff. I still managed to make a game of it. But in the end she beats me with 2 Bad Moons and an Unholy Strength on her Black Knight. G3: See game 1. After the match she told me that Disenchant was her only non-Black spell. Whew! 3-0 matches 6-2 games At this point there are only four people (including me) still undefeated and only the top 4 will make the finals so I'm already in. My opponent asked me if I wanted to draw but I declined. R4: vs. Justin, 5cg G1: This was the only time in my life that I've been totally mana-screwed while playing Sligh. My deck just didn't want to give me land and I get stomped by an 8/8 Maro. G2: See game 1. 3-1 matches 6-4 games I lost but wasn't worried until I found out that my first opponent would be Justin again. Oh boy! The Finals R1: vs. Justin and his 5cg G1: My deck decides to give me mana this time but I just can't handle the Jolrael's Centaurs, especially when he plays an Overrun. G2: I prayed that God would mana-screw Justin. Turn 2 he plays a COP: Red and gets out a Forest, a Gemstone Mine, and an Undiscovered Pardise but no more land after that. I get out 2 Canyon Wildcats, a Cursed Scroll and 2 Wastelands. I strip the UD, the Mine goes away after powering the COP for a while, and I Aftershock his forest. I Scroll him and attack with the Wildcats until he dies. G3: See game 2. Prayer is VERY powerful! The Championship Round: vs. Steve, Ophidian Deck G1: I get out 2 Fireslingers and ping him to death along with the help of two Fireblasts. G2 & G3: I make all kinds of mental errors playing a Boil when he wasn't tapped out and such. He got out 3 Propagandas in both games and I just couldn't handle them even with 4 Pyroblasts. These games were sooo close that I just can't put it into words. Oh well, he out played me and deserved to win. For our prizes he got 25 boosters of Tempest and a T-shirt. I got a starter and 3 boosters of Tempest, a T-shirt, and the latest issue of INQUEST. I was very pleased with the results of my first tourney ever and will be back for next month's T2 tourney.
