Subject: 5cg Type II Tourney Report Date: Mon, 05 Jan 1998 13:30:08 -0800 From: Daniel Algood Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy This was the Oklahoma City qualifier for the Texas Semi-Pro Tournament at Games Headquarters. I'm not sure how many showed up, but it was around thirty. Format was 4 rounds of Swiss with 8 in the finals. Deck list and comments following. Match 1: Eddie Russell Result: W, 2-1 Eddie was playing some sort of mono red deck, not sligh. He tried to win with burn and sudden impact w/ howling mines. I lost the first game, but Chills in the second and a Tradewind in the third got me the win. Match 2: Joe Oxford Result: L, 1-2 I was told that Joe is the second ranked player in OK, so I thought I was toast. He was playing a form of Big Blue although I never saw a capsize or a medallion. I think it was more geared towards creature control and drawing power. Anyway, I won by Centaur beatdown in the first. I had him at two life in the second but 3 Legacy's Allure took too many of my weenies as I drew land 4 straight turns. I died to a snake basket with a Centaur on the board. Game three was even harsher. Had him at one life in the end. I had a tradewind out and he with four mana, but he played a disk. I never saw a disenchant as I continued to draw land. About thirty cards into my library I had 14 lands. He eventually got 8 mana and 2 disks after stealing tradewind #2 with Legacy's Allure. I draw a ranger I win, but I don't. Most intense match of my life. Unfortunately, I see I 'Geddon in the whole match (he countered, of course). Match 3: James Miller Result: W, 2-1 James was playing Stompy with a Vineyard variant. Needless to say, Vineyard was gone after the first game. I won the first game with a Tradewind-Geddon. I blinked the second game and then I died. I even got out a Propaganda but speed kills. He must have smoked crack for the third game. I got down two Propagandas followed by Maro. He plays a HOWLING MINE. I laugh, 'geddon, and eventually start whacking on him with my 10-10 Maro (Ranger was out). He can't handle the beatdown. Match 4: Michael Daniels Result: L, 2-0 This was a win-and-I'm-in match. Well, I didn't win. Michael was playing a classic creature-burn RG deck. First one that I've seen in Type II. I should be able to handle him no problem. Should. Game 1 I draw 2 Birds, 1 Ranger, 1 Guildmage, 1 Geddon, 1 River Boa, and 1 Undiscovered Paradise. He kills Bird 1 with a Fanatic, Bird 2 with a Kindle, Guildmage with who knows what, and I block his Pincher Beetles with my Guildmage. Turn 5 I draw another land, but it's over. He kills me with two fireblasts. Game 2 was worse. I draw three forests, 1 Geddon, my Derelor, 1 Tradewind, and 1 Maro. He has a great draw, dealing me 2 on his second, 6 on his third. I play something (I never saw a 4th land) which he kindles. 6 on his fourth. I play River Boa and just quit. What's the point? Lands: 1 Reflecting Pool 2 City of Brass 3 Undiscovered Paradise 4 Gemstone Mine 10 Forest Creatures: 1 Derelor 1 Lhurgoyf 2 Maro 3 Jolrael's Centaur 4 River Boa 4 Quirion Ranger 4 Granger Guildmage 4 Birds of Paradise 4 Tradewind Riders Spells: 2 Terror 3 Disenchant 4 Incinerate 4 Armageddon Sideboard: 1 Boil 2 Pyroblast 2 Tranquility 3 Chill 3 Propaganda 2 Light of Day 2 Sleight of Mind Changes I would make: Lose the Derelor for another Centaur. Replace the Tranquilities with 1 Disenchant and another Pyroblast. Overall Feeling: I like this deck. I've been tweaking it for a little over 2 months now. I have concerns about the number of 4cc spells (10) in the main deck, so Maro and/or Lhurgoyf might eventually come out. Feel free to comment all you want.
