Subject: [sealed deck] Is there a good deck in here somewhere? Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 19:01:09 GMT From: David Ripton Went to the Washington DC prerelease yesterday. General gripes: These things should be preregistration-only to save an hour or two at the start. And there should be more of them; 500-person tournaments just aren't viable logistically. 11 rounds of Swiss? Are they done yet? If anyone needs info on the Stronghold cards, there's already a spoiler up at www.nground.com. Here are the cards I received for the Stronghold pre-release. I went 1-3 matches, 3-6-0 games, before dropping. I'm a scrub, so it's quite possible that there's a decent deck in here and I couldn't find it. If a strong sealed deck player would take the time to tell me where I went wrong, I'd appreciate it. Blue had some nice cheap fliers and a Tim, but all had 1 toughness. No counters. Some lower-grade anti-creature stuff and a lot of card drawing. Green had beef. Also my only enchantment killer. White had two hard-to-kill fliers, some pretty good small creatures, and Orim's Prayer. Also 3 COPs. Red had small vulnerable creatures and lower-grade removal and Boil. Black had scads of low-end creatures and Evincar's Justice. I ended up going BWr. I didn't have anywhere near enough removal or big creatures in my deck. Black: Lab Rats Marsh Lurker Mindwhip Sliver Gravedigger Serpent Warrior Dauthi Ghoul Torment Evincar's Justice 7 Swamps White: Angelic Protector Spirit en-Kor Elite Javelineer Youthful Knight Lancers en-Kor Honor Guard Orim's Prayer Bandage (This is a great sealed card IMO.) 7 Plains Red: Fireslinger Mogg Fanatic 2 Craven Giant Flowstone Shambler Seething Anger 4 Mountains Artifact: Phyrexian Hulk In retrospect, I think I should have gone down to 3 mountains, dropping the Giants and the Shambler, and turning my red into more of a splash color. I would have replaced those 4 cards with Smite, COP: Black, Cannibalize, and Morgue Thrull. And I should have frequently sided out my red for green. (I'd planned to do this for Tranquility vs. strong enchantments, but I should have done it vs. anyone not playing weenies.)
